Usable items are made obvious by the "use" button, and it's easy to determine the effects unless you happen to be using a Wand of Carrunos. —Alorael, who preferred the wand in E1, when it just had a range of 0 and couldn't be used at all. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

I was going to suggest Google, and then I discovered what actually comes up when you search for anime. —Alorael, who suggests you use Google and refine your search terms. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Guessing from the name, it probably increases your ability with poisons —Alorael, who will have to defer to someone who knows everything to get an answer for this one. Seletine? Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Yes, energy and mass are the same thing, but that is conceptually difficult and not really applicable to the everyday world. —Alorael, who certainly thinks everyoen would be better off knowing about electroweak force instead of E=mc^2. That's a definite everyday (and every second) event. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Snazzier graphics and engines also increase download sizes, and Jeff is adamantly opposed to download bloat. He's still trying to be friendly to the dialup users. —Alorael, who isn't sure Spiderweb would be better off getting out of the retro niche. "Improving your audience" doesn't happen if you have a bigger potential audience but lose out because the competition is also fiercer. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

There's "..." and "…" and ". . ." The first is three periods, the second is a single-character ellipsis, and the third is three periods with spaces in between them. The first is correct, the second is apparently more correct, and the third is wrong. —Alorael, who is absolutely certain that this is correct... unless it isn't. But you know what…? There's a precedent stated clearly somewhere. . . Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

You don't need the piece of paper to get in. If you've looked at it once already then the entrance should be visible. —Alorael, who thinks you may not be looking for the tunnel in the right place. It's almost due east of Aminro and just barely east of the troglodyte temple. You have to go east through the mountains east of the giants and then south. Yes, I remember the truly floppy floppy disk well. The oldest game that I still have in its original form is Loom, which I first played from a floppy disk on an old IBM. The version I have now was on the newer hard floppy, but it's the same code. The same can't be said for Rogue and its derivatives. —Alorael, who was somewhat surprised to find that Loom runs perfectly well in OS 9.2 and decently on OS 10.4, although the music gets progressively more out of sync with itself somehow. Stealing the GDP is not the same as stealing the economy. —Alorael, who isn't greedy. He'd just raid the treasury a few times. No, maybe the mint instead. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Bandwidth is irrelevant. Having questions on other Avernums vanish into the pile of A4 questions, comments, and complaints would be a more plausible motive for the creation of a separate A4 section. —Alorael, who is certain that A5's future depends on A4's success. Buy lots of A4 and A5 is a certainty. Jeff's views are known. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

It states the relationship between mass and energy. Specifically, one kilogram of mass can be converted (assuming perfect, total conversion) into a bit less than 9*10^16 joules of energy. The ratio, c^2, is the square of the speed of light in meters per second. —Alorael, who doesn't consider that such a difficult equation as long as you know what the variables mean. Finding ways to use it is what earns physicists large grants. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Ring of Gyges, anyone? —Alorael, who is quite sure that "shool" was a mispelling of "shul," and while death threats against Bush have to be too common to merit investigation, threatening synagogues is a good way to end any possible career in elected office before it happens. Orson Scott Card memorably describes phrenology as "dowsing for brains." It's a description I like. —Alorael, whose brains are indeed dowsed regularly with substances. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

The signature adds emphasis. Gale has not only the worst of the plagues, which would be bad enough, it also suffers from rampant skribbane addiction. Mon(o)roe is everywhere you don't want to be. —Alorael, who actually would like to be there, but only long enough to restock. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Perhaps you should look at Kel's High Level Party Maker. I collect potions and store them in some town I visit regularly in neat stacks. I do the same with anything else I can't bear to sell. I don't actually carry much around at all, so loot isn't much of a problem. Like Kel, I only take things that have value, and I usually don't have to make multiple trips. Scrolls and wands are largely useless. Sell if they're valuable, don't take if they're not. —Alorael, who liked the vahnatai just fine. In A2 they have nothing to do with lasers or machinery. In A3 the do, to some extend, but it didn't bother me as much as it seemed to bother you. I'm willing to forgive the Filth Factory, and the Golem Factory was too painful to be objectionable for reasons of flavor. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

You can prove that deep down inside a chicken isn't really a chicken. That's fairly self-evident without bringing quantum measurement into the picture, though. More importantly, you can prove that you have no idea what's inside a chicken past a certain point. It may already be exploded! —Alorael, who recalls the original banner being something else. It's been a while, though, and the banner didn't last all that long. Would anyone like to drop by Desp and ask for a ruling by TM and Scorp? But geometry has nothing to do with the question under discussion! Don't sap ivory towers! —Alorael, who will consider the distance from a point to another point 1 unit away to be infinite if he pleases, all right? The distance from a point to another point twice as far away will be twice as infinitely far away, which is actually the same distance. Then some horrible thing with many tentacles will probably come through an acute angle and start Galactic Coring everyone. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

I can understand not wanting to undergo the process of becoming educated, but what possible reason could you have for not wishing to instantaneously gain education? —Alorael, who can see how in many cases it might not be terribly helpful. On the other hand, he also can't see how it would ever be harmful unless you ascribe to a very strong version of the ignorance is bliss theory.
