As Alec once pointed out, if the number of times the average player reloads is anything to go by, Exile is littered with the bodies of would-be heroes. :P

Also, the Exiles/Avernites seem to have mastered a form of control over space and time, using the dark arts of Savefiles, and the artifact called the Character Editor. This gives them the edge. Also, if Exile/Avernite heros don't move, no one else can.

"What is the problem?"

There is something about the man in front of Garath which made his gaze slide off, a sort of slipperiness that wrapped itself around his who profile. Garath blinked, and tried to stave off a headache.

"The... allies guarding the temple, they refuse to let me enter. They say that I have not acquired permission, that I should not even be here. Those fools..."

The figure moved forward a little, spoke with a rasping voice.

"Have they been corrupted by demons?"

Garath paused. Dangerous ground.

"No. Do not take action. They are merely slow, foolish, and their folly does not concern us. Have you found the priest?"

The corpsman nodded. "He is here?"

Garath stood up in surprise, turning to delight.

"He made it here? Walked all the way across demon held territory?"

"There a demons here?"

There was a strange light in the corpsman's eyes. Garath changed the subject.

"It is useless now, though. The commander in charge of the temple must immediately have contacted his master, and anything useful to us must have been removed. This whole idea was never any good from the start."

"He has been met by companions, too."

"Oh?"

"One of them was a librarian. He talked about a Stone that he could use. He seems to think the Stone is in the temple, and he is afraid that you could do something with the stone."

"But that's stupid. The Lord isn't going to leave something important like that out here. He had it specially transported to the demon cave, where he is trying to figure out how to make it work. All they will find in the temple is an empty pedestal, and a lot of guar..."

He stood bolt upright, eyes opened wide.

"You say this librarian knows how to use the Stone...?"

And then a broad smile spread across his face.

Instead of a backpack, it must be possible to go one better: Items in BoA are currently persistent, right? So you can have instead a pocket dimension. An object that operates by saving the current location of the player, teleporting him to the storage town, and then teleporting him back on a second use. Though this could be hugely abusable, and can only be used in town mode.

So Sadith and Raymond crept closer and closer to Garath's camp. Soon, they were within a hundred yards, eyes searching the trees carefully for hidden guards.

And then the forest came alive.

They had barely time to hide as silouettes shifted all around them. Huge forms, appeared, climbing up from the undergrowth. Things like horses, but dark and slavering shuddered in their reins as a host of hordlings loaded supplies. A small brigade of guardians bustled through the hatchway, and brought out the mage, squirming and shout, loading him onto one of the larger pack-animals. And then they were off.

Stealth did not appear to be a priority. The two humans were almost deafened by the noise as the demon beasts walked through the forest, over the trees. The pace was remarkable, a column of mass focused in forward intent. With Sadith and Raymond on foot, the demons quickly passed from sight.

But the trail of trashed and crushed trees were easy to follow, though it was hours before they caught up with the demons once again.

***

Meanwhile, Vor woke in shock from a nightmare. Then he heard the noise of the demons approaching the temple, watched the dark clumps pace relentlessly on.

A second group appeared from within the temple, small glints showing weapons drawn. A lone figure walked out from the newcomers, to be met by a representative from with in. For a while, they were motionless in debate, and then the figures returned. With a heavy sign, the new demons shifted and encamped.

There must have been a disagreement of some kind, about entry. Strange developments, indeed. One thing was clear to Vor. The time for action was approaching.

OOC: Sorry for borrowing so many PCs. Just had to get us to the temple.

Garath spoke a word of mild rebuke to a nearby imp, who rapidly disappeared with head bowed in shame.

Eferas harzarded a look around. They appeared to be alone.

"So you didn't get Sylvain, then."

The other man tensed in anger, and then relaxed.

"Yes, imps are so hideously incompetent, only really good as cannon fodder. I'm running out of them, now, and really, good riddance. But Sylvain will not escape me for long. I have my pet corpsman tracking him. It was easy enough to redefine for him the idea of differentiating demons from non-demons. My friends find human minds to be very mallable, especially when weakened by decades of military training aimed at making them follow orders."

Garath smiled thinly. Eferas considered this quietly.

"So Chadussid was right, after all. There was a traitor, and you were it. You were the reason why we kept getting attacked, the reason why I could never sense anything. I suppose you did the blood eagle, too."

Garath stood up, and turned his back to the mage. For a moment, Eferas considered casting a spell, but the overpowering sensation of demons all around them put paid to that idea.

"I did what I had to do."

"And what you did was evil."

Garath laughed. "Evil? What is good, and what is evil? People die all the time, and where are the onlookers to make rants about evil? Good and evil are decided by those in power. Power, then, is the only absolute."

"So you are just power-mad then. Was all that stuff about believing in magic just a lie then?"

"It wasn't always a lie. I now know of it as an instinctual way of controlling my ability. I didn't believe in magic, until the demon lord spoke to me, and offered something I couldn't refuse."

"What's that? Power?"

Garath trembled, his hands rubbing into each other. "No, my life. You do not refuse a lord of demonkind. But now things have changed, and I can see things in a clearer light."

He bent close, to whisper in Eferas' ear.

"I offer you now the path of power. Join with me."

"I will never aid a servant of demonkind, Garath. I will only destroy you."

Garath shook his head violently, and lowered his voice still further.

"Hear me on this. My path co-incides with that of the demons only for now. I do not intend to allow Him to accomplish His goal. I am not insane enough to wish servititude within Hell on Earth. I know he will betray me - it is in his nature, his essence. Aid me, and with the knowledge locked up in the temple, we can defeat the demon lord."

There was silence for a while. Then Eferas spoke.

"I don't believe you. If that was true, you would not be skulking around, trying to kidnap people. You would not be talking to me about power and strength. What would happen, if you defeated the Demon Lord? What happens when you control the portal?"

Garath paused, and then before Eferas could respond, spun around, smacking the mage with the palm of his hand.

"The Demon Lord has the Stone within his grasp, fool! Do you think your refusal to help me will matter, one bit? It is only a matter of days before He is ready to use it, and then no force can stop him!"

Eferas forced a smile onto his pained face.

"You told me, the minds of men are mallable. This is just another mind trick. I don't believe you at all."

"Then just wait there, fool. You will help me use Sylvain to open the sacred chambers of the temple. You will help me triumph. Whether you like it or not. Don't try to escape - you will only waste your energies. We will continue on to the temple in a few minutes."

With that, Garath rose and left the chamber. The door slammed behind him, and Eferas was left again in a damp, cold, blackness.

Dark voices moved amongst the shadows of the forest, amidst the rasping of scales and the clatter of claws on dry bark. In the centre of a small clearing knelt a man, before an orb of flashing light. Black veins moved across the surface of the orb.

"Garath Norben, you have failed."

"I have not, master."

"You dare argue with me?"

The man remained silent.

"You were tasked to remain within the group, to aid in their self-destruction, to give me information they can provide, and to deliver demonslayer into my hands. Instead, your cover has been blown within days. The punishment for failure is death."

Rumblings grew within the woods around him. Garath stood, a blade in his hand.

"No, sir. I have found out their intentions, and I have shattered them. Even now, my scouts find that they have broken, and disunited, they will surely fall. The corpsman, Chadussid, had wasted his time fighting shadows and illusions, while our forces have guaged his strengths. They are weakened, and they have run out of their clever tricks."

The orb dimmed for a moment, as though in consideration.

"Then you will go to Selgar, where you say they are headed. You will take command of the humans there which I have perverted to my side, and you will take the town, and destroy the mission."

"Yes, master."

"And Garath, I see mysteries in your mind. Why are you so interested in this priest, Sylvain? And in this temple? Are there things you have not tol.."

Instantly, Garath threw himself at the orb. Caught off balance, the magical field suspending it fluttered wildly, and the small sphere spun through the air to a nearby tree, where it shattered into a dozen pieces.

"An accident." He mumbled.

A small imp approached, bowing gracelessly.

"What orders?"

"Send half of our forces to Selgar. Inform the locals. Is Chadussid going through the forest?"

"Yes, sir."

"Then torch the forest. That should slow him down, until he gets to open ground."

"What of the main force?"

"Keep them in reserve. Our enemies haven't slept properly for days. Keep raiding them, don't let them have a moment's rest."

"And you?"

"I am going to the temple. Send a snatch-squad to find the priest, and bring him to me."

Garath grinned manically, his eyes ablaze, staring upwards. Chadussid grabbed him by the collar, shook him as hard as he could, but the man would not stop looking outwards into the sky.

"Tell me, what the hell were you doing?"

Garath shook his head. Not long now.

"Who are you working for? Tell me, or I will give you pain!"

Seeing no response, the corpsman pulled back his fist and struck his prisoner across his chin. Garath only grinned, and Chadussid felt a sudden burning sensation as a bloody mark appeared not on Garath's face but his own.

The other man's grin widened as the rest stepped away. Garath's laughter ran hollow.

"To transform my gift into the transfer of life energies... that was the first gift."

"You... are working for the demons!"

"For now, yes. But I have no time for meaningless questions."

He rose, and the ropes fell off to the ground. Chadussid sprang forward, a knife in hand.

"Not a step! You can still die, can't you."

"Shame that I will have to break the seals the old fashioned way. We will, hopefully, not meet again."

Garath looked once more upwards. Then a flash of red light blinded them, when they looked again, he was gone.

Eferas shouted from the hatch.

"We have to take the tunnel, now! There are demons all around us. I can sense them now..."

Chadussid tightened his grip on his sword.

"How many? Ten? Twenty?"

Eferas paused for a moment, and looked back in terror.

"Over a hundred."

Garath ignored all this. He stood, his body taut, his eyes fixed on Sylvain beneath him. That fool Chadussid - he considered this one to be just another priest. How wrong he was.

"I told you before. I'm not going to tell you a thing."

Sylvain was trying to look away, but there was something in Garath's glare which held him, sapped his strength.

"We have ways of making you talk. Powerful ways."

The priest squeezed his mouth shut. Garath decided on a different tact.

"Look around you. We are not demons here. We are simply people here to help. Now, tell me about the temple."

"You will not defile it!"

Garath spoke even more softly, moved closer so the others would not hear.

"My... allies have no time to waste defiling your pitiful temple. We wish only the knowledge that is sealed within. Now, I shall ask you gently, what are the seals?"

Sylvain shook with fear, his eyes trying to look past to the others. But he didn't cry out, as they seemed too caught up in their own arguments to notice. And perhaps they were enemies, too.

And then he felt the edge of a sword press into him. Looking down, he seemed to recognise the blade.

"What are the seals?"

Suddenly, a figure stepped up behind them. In an instant Garath whirled around, sword readied in his hand. The rest quickly turned to look at him.

OOC: minus demonslayer

"This is getting repetitive," grunted Garath. He rubbed as his shoulder as Eferas swiftly advanced the newest attacker.

"You wait ages for a survivor, and two come along at the same time..." said Eferas, who checked his staff for any damage. He wondered whether the staff was actually designed with this sort of use in mind, but it seemed generally fine.

"Looks like this one's a priest."

Garath turned his attention immediately to the new man. "He's the priest?"

By now, he had dropped the unconscious body he was dragging, and stepped forward towards the crouching figure.

"What's your name?"

The priest stared at him. "Sylvain."

"Right, Sylvain, we are here to help you. But you need to answer some questions."

Sylvain spat at him. "I won't tell you a thing."

Garath started to say something, but Eferas has interuppted, pointing to the body who still lay. They heard a soft moan, as the man move closer to awakening.

With Garath cursing, they proceeded to continue back to the bunker.

OOC: Might post later. Breaking the one-per-day rule, yes, but well...

"No!" Garath almost shouted. Eferas looked up, surprised.

"I need to... ah... figure out if there are any demons around, just in case."

Garath shook his head vigorously. "No... we don't have time for that kind of pointless trick. He could be hurt, he could be dying."

"He doesn't look in that bad shape to me. Just shaken... and obviously with a bump on his head."

Garath ignored him. His eyes flickered quickly from side to side, he licked his lips rapidly, trembled, a little.

"He came from out there, don't you see? He may have important information. And we need to get it out of him, quickly."

Eferas was confused. "What sort of information? Surely it can wait."

But Garath was already dragging the limp body back towards the bunker. With a sigh, Eferas assented, and soon they arrived back with the others.

I like archers. Really, I dunno why, but archery seems much more powerful in BOA than in previous exile/avernum games. My nephil bowman is doing easily 2*100 dam per turn with simple iron arrows (cheaply bought from most places, and dropped by enemy archers) and a blessed bow, with quick strike and the ap boosting trait. And with the crossbow with steel bolts, he can do much more... Add the few points of throw weapons on my warrior (who has lots of missiles from skeleton javeliners), and most stuff don't even manage to get into melee. My spellcasters also have a couple of points in thrown weapons, and a blessed sling apiece - just in case.

Party is currently:

Samus the slith paladin. Spears and enough priest spells to heal decently, and bless, shield and haste. Also 7 points in thrown missiles, and a nice stack of javelins for the initial stages of battle. (Where I try to kill every enemy mage as soon as I can.) Plenty of special skills. He's also my pack rat, and tank.

Actius the nephil assassin. Melee weapons, 20 skill in tools, 10 in bows, and a few in sharpshooter. Lots of nature lore, quick strike, and whatever that trait is called. Always acts first in battle.

Mara the priest/mage.

Zara the mage/alchemist, with just enough priest skill to cast group heal. (Not very imaginative, but, what the hey...)

Actually, I think the big problem is that the exe is packaged inside the BOA Editor directory in the zip. So simply unzipping, and using the "use path" option will not work.

A hackish way could be to have a terrain feature that looks like your group, and a script that repositions the tile with each step you take. That's what I think, anyways.

EDIT: I've experimented a bit, and this actually seems to work! Right now, I'm seeing if I can make a mobile town. (BTW, remember to add a script too to check if the party is adjacent to the object. I don't think there is a way to set nodes on the fly. In fact, I don't know what this does to nodes at all.) The Flying Fortress of FZ, here we come!

EDIT2: Hmm... not possible, most since I can't find a call to move from outdoors to town. Still, I might be able to make mobile teleport gates.

Put something in START_STATE of your scenarioscript?

(Start_state runs every turn. So you can have the wand set SDF, which start_state checks for the next turn and deactivates full visibility. I haven't tried, but should work. Though I think you need to be very careful of a wand of this type: in some cases, it could be ugly, indeed.)

The vahnatai aren't insects!

At least, I am pretty sure they aren't insects.

I think they are pretty close to the Gray sort of aliens, popularly in UFO folklore. Minus the flying saucer, of course. Vahnatai go into hibernation for long periods of time, and Rentar-Ihrno's gang has just woken up.

According to ZKR, the bad sort of sliths are currently engaged in a war with Avernum, though the Avernites are holding them off.

The Empire is in internal crisis from a host of minor rebellions, who have been encouraged by events on Morrow's isle, Prazac's new liberal policies, and the reconcilliation with Avernum.
