Magic and Progress in Blades of Avernum

My opinion is that Prazac will fall - and fall hard. Rebels coming out of the woodwork, alliance with Avernum annoying the old loyalists, failing to receive much credit for saving Valorim, failing even to strike back at the Vahnatai, drugs running rampant, plenty of enemies. And so on. Pretty soon, unless another semi-invincible gang of four come to prop her up, her opposition will converge, and she will be out. Or at least, made into a puppet. Then, we may see a situation as seen in middle ages Japan - a shogunate, with a symbolic leader.

A number of candidates... From Valorim, Mayor Knight seems the most ambitious. There is also the general who was fighting the golems. Even the Anama might use the aftermath of A3 to further their advances - I'd put them as a symptom, not a cause of general magical distrust. Any replacement is likely to clamp heavily down on magic, again, if they know about successive incidents such as the Tower of Magi disaster, the Lyfan incident, the Valorim monster plagues, the Skylark Vale diseases, the Seleucia atrocities, the Gebra cults, the general proliferation of magic banditry. Magic is likely to return again to strict Imperial control. A backlash like that is inevitable - the only question is how far it would go...

You know, with their knack for disguise, Rakhashi may be very capable of infiltrating into the higher echelons of the Empire.

(Cue crazy theory... Garzahd a rakhashi in disguise?)

But really, GF2 is pretty easy to complete. You should just go with the faction you agree with.

Killing a Doomguard in The Exile Trilogy

I remember having great success using Protective Sphere (sp? Priest spell, which creates concentric fields) and Web. IIRC, the Doomguards would slip onto the fields, or the webs. I killed Erika this way.

Don't dual-wield, or spell-attack in this battle. Just keep up the major blessings, and whack with your greatswords/halberds. I remember using man's best friend (aka captured Ur-Basilisks) as well.

Adding custom items in Blades of Avernum Editor

Reopen the file in paint, and have another look. When you save, the colours may have been changed. Paint works badly with palette changes. Also check that your colours are to the correct format - remember, BoA takes 256 colour 8 bit bitmaps.

Finally, lighting and shadows may alter your colours. Or perhaps its psychological?

You can copy and paste in some graphics, if you want, to replace the normal PC graphics. You might also be able to hex edit in race characteristics. But you would make Jeff mad, or sad, which is bad, you naughty lad.

If you are very clever, you might be able to do it with passwords - generate a password based on the stats of the item. Then, when the player reenters it, remake the item.

Of course, this is crying out for abuse.

Jeez... Someone should buy Jeff a new hard disk, or something. Disc capacity is pretty cheap these days, isn't it. I'm sure that if we all contribute a dollar or so, he can get a few dozen extra gigs.

How's he using that capacity up so fast...? Did someone say porn?

Oh puhleez.

Doom 3 is, to put it simply, System Shock, lightened up, simplified, with better graphics (but NOT sound), and the Doom monster set. If you find Doom 3's cheap "spawning behind you in dark places" scary.... SS2, and to a less extent SS1 will make your brain explode.

Eww. Messy.

Garath watched in satisfaction, as Vor graduated to brighted shades of pale. The explosion seemed huge, even from such a distance.

"What on earth..." the scribe began, but of course, it was nothing from earth that triggered such a destruction. Such distinctions were quickly becoming academic, as a rumbling began to be heard.

It was water, a lot of water. Rushing and pounding down shallow river beds, spilling into open fields. Water wiping all away, like a foaming white hand wiping away dust. Soon it brushed into the village, and then.

Their demonic companion grabbed their attention with sharp talons.

"It is done." It said.

In all corners of the landscape, clumps of black, red and grey appeared, moving with great speed. When they got close, the two humans saw that they were demons - thousands of them. The figure spoke again, a voice filled with soft hisses.

"Now we shall all return to the cave from which we came. As witnesses, as witnesses to how you, Garath, shall with the Stone bring about the coming of our lord..."

Vor contained his anger. It was all he could do to restrain himself from hitting out, from screaming out. He was a scribe, yes, but now to stand by while Garath ordered plain mass murder. He thought quietly to himself. One day, when this is over, he would find justice.

They were marching on in the wasteland. Soon, they came upon a rocky outcrop, rising up into the sky. Pulled and dragged by the servant demon, they climbed to the top. From there, they could just see the demon cave, with its waiting guards, and Selgar itself. Garath caught sight of movement on the approach to Selgar dam.

"Well, well, well. They are going to protect the dam."

Vor almost jumped in glee.

"Don't get too happy. If they succeed, which is doubtful, and prevent the destruction of the city, unless I think of something exceedingly clever, our life expectancy would be measured in seconds."

The scribe quietened down.

"I'll be happy so long as you get what you deserve."

Garath whistled softly.

"We shall see..."

So either it's Nethergate 2 (let's all pray), or it's Avernum 4.

Er, ah, I don't entirely know what to say.

Hmm... Asimov, in BoA. Nice, pacifist, helpful golems, surrounded by bigoted traditionalist humans. You get sent in to investigate a murder.
