There are many places that store your password in a way the admin can see it (this board included), and not all admins are as trustworthy as ours.

Just something to be aware of. :P

A temporary counter-measure to the thread-eating will hopefully be the live-updating mirror once that's done.
But in the long run, a forum with less than 2-3 data corruptions per month would be nice.

There is a fine line between going along with a joke and being insulting. I'm looking at you, Nikki and Nioca. Stop trashing this rather fine topic.

Edit: In other words, what Marlenny said, plus mod hat.

If the new board finally had a sane way of archiving private messages (or at least did away with these ridiculous limits) good. Otherwise I'd just let it fill up in protest and make people use email. :P

Just for a quick update:

It appears that Riibu and I are the only ones still writing - unless Milla and TGM are opting for stealth and will snipe our wordcounts out of the blue come December. But TGM edited out his section from the wiki, so I don't know what he's up to.

I passed 25k yesterday - suddenly, it feels like going downhill. I hope that won't include the quality. 27k now, and the third milestone is on the horizon!

Tip: Use passwords that are easier to remember, keep track of your old email addresses, and use the password-saving option in your browser (protected with a Master password for the paranoid).

I don't remember losing any account permanently - although at some places I have to reset my password on a weekly basis or so.

Interesting.

Does anyone else have some suggestions to list?

Some ideas: Invision, vBulletin, phpBB, UBB.threads (otherwise known as "throwing good money after bad"), EzBoard (that was a joke), punBB. Those are just about all forums I've ever posted on, so I have to cut it off here.

Edit: Or Jeff could opt to revamp his entire site with some Content Management System (I'm in love with Drupal, myself), and integrate the forum with the rest of that site.

But I like the retro handmade website design, and it is certainly a running system (and has been for the last 12 years or so).

The plot thickens.

By the way, given the recent number of topic deaths, I'd advise that this topic stop at 500 posts or so. Apparently, it can randomly strike any topic (see Tyran's census) but will strike topics when they get too long, too...

I don't get the snaa, but I do remember the switch from Ikonboard for some reason. Even though I wasn't around back then. :P

In the meantime, Invision and vBulletin are both good choices.

phpBB, I am afraid to say, sucks. If you have any kind of money to spend, avoid it. I prefer free software normally, but phpBB isn't up to par.

But yeah, a board whose tagline is apparently "Database? Who needs a database?" should probably considered outdated.

On that note, I read the Infopop forums the other day and saw how people were debating whether the switch to MySQL made sense, seeing as the flat files worked perfectly. I couldn't read on...

I must say that Invision's topic-splitting option tops UBB's in elegance.

There, it is even possible to merge a topic into another (and move posts between topics), although the one time I tried it, the result confused the hell out of everyone involved, so I didn't use it again. Apparently, it's only really useful when one of the merged topics has 2-3 posts, not when both are full-length discussions.

The topic title. I didn't even notice the SarChasm reference in fatman's name, and just thought it was a misspelling of Star or something.
