Goodbye, thou fool.

For future reference, In Before The Lock is noob for "I am a sad fool who needs to use every opportunity I can to get a few posts in." Just leave it and let someone clean it up.

I would have liked to make good on Alorael's promise, but can't be bothered. Everyone whose post contained "IBTL", please consider it symbolically to have been edited to "I Be The Loser".

Gah. I was stupid. They didn't *actually* change all the riddles and passwords from last year, I just kept my notes wrong. Apparently, I would write down a riddle using the URL of the *current riddle*, and then the username/password combination to go to the *next* level. So when I skipped ahead, I would have needed to enter the previous password combo, not the one on the same line.

Back to level 35, going one level at a time, but very fast thanks to my notes.

Edit: And it turns out that the "level 60" mess was just a typo. I didn't actually get to 60 and skip 41-59. I just mistyped and wrote 60 when I meant 41.

And 41 is the bit with those tubes/hoses that has me stumped.

Edit: I got a hint, but it was legit and from the official non-spoily forums. And now I've solved what had me for more than a year.

This morse converter worked like a charm for me in that one riddle, too.

But mine's cooler. :P

I notice that morse code is still popular. There are a few translators available online, but I noticed that none of them had a search plugin available yet.

So I used the procrastination power from my Nano novel to cook up my own tool. If you use a browser that supports OpenSearch plugins (Firefox 2, IE7, some others), you can add the plugin by opening this page, then opening the search box drop-down menu (in the top right corner of the window), then clicking the yellow ".-" icon near the bottom of the list.

Nice extra: Like Google's "instant calculator", this plugin uses the auto-complete feature to show the translation as you type. Enter the morse code in the search box (words are separated with " / ") and watch the translation appear in the suggestion menu without having to leave the page!

With this, the Morse puzzles of not pron should be a breeze. :D

I got to level 40-45 on notpron about a year ago... I was stumped by a cryptic picture of a pipe, I remember. Nothing gave. Eventually I just yielded.

Edit: According to my notes, 60. But I don't seem to have records for the levels between 41-59, so I might have cheated and skipped ahead.

Edit2: And a fat lot of good it did me, since they appear to rotate the passcodes every now and then, leaving my notes from June 2005 worthless.

Fun to start over.

I edited out the stats post and changed the title when I saw it worked.

... well, duh! I should have started this in General and then deleted it. See, the brightest ideas come afterward. :)

We had something like this before, though admittedly it was a while ago.

Last time, this was directed primarily at real-life death and as an afterthought at PC death.

Since I didn't post in the other topic 3 1/2 years ago, and it's been some time since I played, here's what I think about RL death.

Also since I realized only after the fact that this was in the GF forum, not in General. :P

------
At the risk of sounding cheesy I'd have to say that my favorite kind of death would be in some act of heroism. Selfish reasons, really. It should ensure I a) feel tremendously good about myself just before it ends, b) I will be remembered as a kind of larger-than-life altruist super-hero, and c) if there does turn out to be an afterlife based on moral behavior, I could score a few last-minute points that make up for all the liberalism and the wanking.

Er.

Failing that, I'd like something that I can see some time away, giving me time to sort through my stuff and also the opportunity to enjoy every remaining second of my life more consciously than ever before.

Worst way I could imagine is a sudden, unexpected death that would leave all my cluttered affairs, unfinished projects, unfulfilled dreams behind.

And that's my portion of gruesome for today.

No thanks, if I do manage to wean myself off Windows, I will use the opportunity to get Linux. Why switch from being owned by one corporation for another? :P

I also note that you didn't see fit to call me "Ja der Wagen humpen" when I used that name. Why start now? Thralni, JadeWolf, that's two of you now.

Ben: Having programs and macros access mouse control and move the cursor to click on buttons is quaint, but the biggest WTF there is.

I actually wrote a program like that two years ago. It would take a post, split it up into sentences, quote each sentence separately and respond with randomly generated hard-right pro-Bush bile. Very amusing. :P

You are also a Celtic goddess of war (victory).

How this is related to lightning, I don't know. Google Image search doesn't bring up anything related either.

If this is anything like the Germans remembering Hitler for building so many autobahns (expressways), then that is more a pretense/joke. Possibly derived from a sarcastic application of "de mortuis nil nisi bonum" - no ill of the dead.

I'll bet that both dictators are not actually remembered firstly for their efficiency and secondly for their atrocities.

But I see the point, even if the example was overdrawn.

Jim Webb beats George Allen in Virginia, winning the Senate for the Democrats. Or so I just heard.

So the opposition has both houses now. And the president's approval rating is somewhere in the low forties, as far as I know.

"Mandate."
