Because the basic qualifications for being a mod are something that everyone should be able to meet (though not everyone does...), it really is mostly a glorified popularity contest with some people rendered ineligible by their obvious lack of impartiality. It's not as though being a mod carries a stipend, any glory, or throngs of men, women, and tentacles who hang around you at all times.

Really, since the death of Misc, there's just no fun in moderating anymore... Nostalgia!!!!!

During the time of the Misc. mod elections, a bunch of conservatives (Logalot, Sir Motrax of Exile, and Enraged Slith) and Alorael became fed up with Desperance members ruling the Spidweb boards (a good number of them were moderators at the time, including Alec, Djur, Scorpius, Terror's Martyr, Saunders, and Drakefyre, IIRC). They decided to form a conspiracy to overthrow Desperance. This is despite the fact that at the time, Alorael also posted at Desperance, unless I am mistaken. My guess is he joined the conspiracy more for amusement than for anything else. Anyway, at one point, Scorpius posted a big banner on top of the Misc forums that said "ADoS IS A LAGOT, Love Scorpius & TM". The Polareans took this chance to get me to join. Sir Motrax of Exile sent me an IM and invited me to a chat room, where we decided on the name Polaris and hatched a plot. The first thing we did was get TM and Scorpius demodded for the offense. We also convinced Frahhamn to join our conspiracy, and sent him as a spy into Desperance (because the rest of us were too frightened of the place) to uncover their evil plans (of which they had none, of course). He was quickly found out and nobody really cared, except that the Despers used this failed espionage as a reason to make fun of us even more than they already were. On top of that, Frah decided he liked the place and stayed there for a while (although he eventually left). Anyway, at some point they started a message board on Invision. Eventually Polaris and Desperance forgot their differences and they get along now, for the most part.
