Mh... is that writing style usual for the British "gossip press"?

In any case, this cracked me up:

It's not as though being a mod carries a stipend, any glory, or throngs of men, women, and tentacles who hang around you at all times.

Really, since the death of Misc, there's just no fun in moderating anymore... Nostalgia!!!!!

Heavens forbid Alorael. Who'd run against you (or do so and still dare to walk past darkened third-floor windows in the dead of night)? :P

But, see, that's where the difference between "ability to get oneself elected" and "qualification to do the job" comes in. I don't deny that in such an utterly anxious and closed-minded society as ours, anyone doubting themselves publically is immediately denounced. "Heavens, he is questioning himself! Oh, what do we do, we might be questioning ourselves next! Can't have that - get rid of him."

I hope everyone is realizing I did not condone anything SMoE did then (the second of the threads should have shown that), I am giving it as an example to show how much pressure a conservative had felt (as opposed to been in) here.
Although TM's above post about Ben is just as good an example. On most days, I might feel the exact same thing (-10, -9.8, remember?), it's just that I try to be polite/tolerant/whatever.

Amazingly, at this temperature range (-30 to -45) it makes little difference. -30 to -45°F is -34 to -42°C, and -30 to -45°C is -22 to -49°F. All temperatures at which you wouldn't step out without a warm coat.

We have no constitution, no existing democracy (three mostly irregular elections in the past years are no solid system), and we don't really need it (absolutist regime with oligarchy and backroom cabals are more apt to this place anyway, no?). Shortly, we are as ready for democracy as Iraq. A mock election out of the blue would be that: A mock election.

It'd be fun though...

Indeed. The "Our Lord Voldemort" pretty much confirms that.

Edit: And elsewhere, "It is the author and
publisher’s desire that this book not be obtained for the purposes of supplementing this article. It is not necessary for the comprehension of this article," carries with it a bitter barb. Most serious online sources indeed play on the reader's ignorance of the subject discussed.

Stughalf, if ADoS says Polaris had many conservative people at the start, it makes sense. Often, conservatives have tighter sensibilities, and when it started, they did have a rough time here. Later too; look at what happened in '03 during the "US Conflict Avatar" thread.1, 2.

Oh, and despite its political stance, Polaris does have members from all over the spectrum (Drakefyre, Firedrake, David, Motrax, formerly Rowen, to name just a few from the Right), and we do have civilized discussion for the most part.

What happened? From ADoS's account, I would say that this board used to have a mafya vibe. Why would you ever let something as beautiful as that end? You would be able to look down on newer members such as myself.
Times change. We still have our respective posses, but no more gang wars. We organize roleplays now. :)

It seems the basic idea is escaping a Unicode character (#8238, I don't know what it is) through the form. With all other HTML code, the forum appears to disable a tag (probably by replacing the '<''>' with their character codes, like < for '<'.)

However, it doesn't do this to Ascii/Unicode insertions, or not to all of them. If it did, Alo wouldn't be able to use his — I believe.

A nice backdoor, but I don't want to break my profile page. The board is unstable enough as it is.

It will be anyway, I expect, in around a year or two. Postage is speeding up. We are already nearing the post count we had at the time of the last PPP. Will probably hit around August or September, unless they let it go higher this time.

On the other hand, General has grown in sanity in the last year if anything. Mixed blessing.

So far JadeWolf's forum is doing okay, despite the fact that it only has about seven members that frequently participate. If you haven't at least looked at it, you should. Oh, and why was Polaris founded?
During the time of the Misc. mod elections, a bunch of conservatives (Logalot, Sir Motrax of Exile, and Enraged Slith) and Alorael became fed up with Desperance members ruling the Spidweb boards (a good number of them were moderators at the time, including Alec, Djur, Scorpius, Terror's Martyr, Saunders, and Drakefyre, IIRC). They decided to form a conspiracy to overthrow Desperance. This is despite the fact that at the time, Alorael also posted at Desperance, unless I am mistaken. My guess is he joined the conspiracy more for amusement than for anything else. Anyway, at one point, Scorpius posted a big banner on top of the Misc forums that said "ADoS IS A LAGOT, Love Scorpius & TM". The Polareans took this chance to get me to join. Sir Motrax of Exile sent me an IM and invited me to a chat room, where we decided on the name Polaris and hatched a plot. The first thing we did was get TM and Scorpius demodded for the offense. We also convinced Frahhamn to join our conspiracy, and sent him as a spy into Desperance (because the rest of us were too frightened of the place) to uncover their evil plans (of which they had none, of course). He was quickly found out and nobody really cared, except that the Despers used this failed espionage as a reason to make fun of us even more than they already were. On top of that, Frah decided he liked the place and stayed there for a while (although he eventually left). Anyway, at some point they started a message board on Invision. Eventually Polaris and Desperance forgot their differences and they get along now, for the most part.

"most" is the key word here. :P

Ironically, in spite of the "conservative" roots you mention, Polaris is now about or nearly as far left of center as Desperance, and notably more so than Spiderweb (Political Compass put SW at -4.4, -4.3 and Polaris at -5.8, -4.9). What differences remain are superficial.

Are there strong arguments against the feasibility of just adding to the moderation staff without having a current moderator step down?

Aside from that, I don't see why not. I know, deep down, that I should vote for Alcritas.
