Dolphin: Forgot to upload the file. And yes, eventually. But all info that is not in the profiles has to be entered by hand, which will be tedious and long.

Kel: Unfortunately, that's almost impossible. I'd have to make it copy every single thread page on the board, which is a LOT of traffic.
I plan to make a script to do that for the next Pied Piper Project incarnation - it's going to happen some time in the future, no doubt, with the speed that the boards are going.

A2 has my favorite intro music. A3 isn't bad, but that melancholy sound is just stunning. I wouldn't mind knowing where it came from, especially if the composer has more of it.

After my brief (ahem) absence last month, in spite of what I said in the departing topic, I could not bear to leave out the statistics for a single month.

The system has been updated; for one thing, it collects more data now (most of the optional fields for each profile such as Location, Reg Date, Birthday etc.), for another, it produces two files, one comma separated and one that can be fed into a MySQL database. For now, you won't notice any difference since the statistics are still the same - it just eases my workload.

Short note, which I should have said earlier: When I say "this month", I mean the last thirty or so days since the last count. When I say "August", I actually mean the counting period that ended in August.

-----------------------------------------------

1. 108 new members have passed by the Turtle pit this month; 62 of them have fed the turtles and posted. The other 46, upon removing their sanity, were unable to tell the difference and mistakenly cast themselves into the pit while their sanity wandered on in - didn't you wonder why the mood is so sober lately?

Monthly Overview:
April 2005: 151/87
May 2005: 78/43
June 2005: 147/91
July 2005: 153/88
August 2005: 108/62

2. Meanwhile, our active community has shrunk back to below 300: 293. Of these, 62 are the above mentioned newbies and 231 are the community core.

Monthly Overview:
April 2005: 360 (273)
May 2005: 262 (219)
June 2005: 325 (232)
July 2005: 352 (264)
August 2005: 293 (231)

3. 5917 posts. Another near all-time low, beaten only by May - apparently, the community is most active just after school/college is out and just before people go on vacation. That's 190.9 posts per day, or 20.1 posts per member, or 0.65 per member per day.

Monthly Overview:
April 2005: 7576 | 186 | 21 | 0.47
May 2005: 4723 | 169 | 18 | 0.52
June 2005: 7267 | 251 | 22.4 | 0.77
July 2005: 8691 | 271.6 | 24.7 | 0.77
August 2005: 5917 | 190.9 | 20.1 | 0.65

In other words, less members, less posts per member, and overall the second slowest month since the statistics started.

===========================================

Now, the ranking.

1. ben: 2812. Kelandon: 2263. Drakefyre: 2134. Thuryl: 2095. Marvin/Thralni: 2026. Alorael: 1997. Dolphin: 1948. Spring: 1629. Student of Trinity: 16010. Arancaytar: 153In other words, ben won - even though he, too, posted less than last month. Kelandon came up to second again, past Drakey and Thuryl. Marvin, who joined last month and took off like a rocket, has continued this trend. In spite of claiming I was leaving, I still got in the top ten. O_o
Finally, here are the complete rankings.

And now I'm tired. 'night, all.

Oh, the database is finished and could be publically used if I had a PHP search page done (for obvious reasons I don't want to give out access to the MyAdmin Panel). As a matter of fact, *this* count worked perfectly, just the data from last month that I need for comparison is incomplete.

There are only two SW worlds, really - Terrestria (Geneforge) and Ermarian (Avernum/Exile). Nethergate is set in real-world (mythical) Britain.
Since I'm more familiar with Ermarian, I'd prefer Avernum or Exile most. And discounting that I have better things to do than rotting my brain in MMORPGs right now, I'd probably be a permanent fixture in any free Ermarian MMORPG, and would at least somewhat consider a paid one (though not really, no).
But this is all theoretical, since Jeff has neither the time to code it, nor as I suspect the inclination to let someone else do so.

OOC: Read, no you are not the first. Even if it were a short journey of two weeks (and that's far too close; we're pretty much off the edge of the map here), you would take nearly a month there and back, not taking into account you're on foot, lacking provisions, and wounded (you didn't stop in the village if I remember correctly).
It might make far more sense if you don't report to the King - you can get food elsewhere (perhaps some valuables on you that the women didn't find?). By travelling to the King, you are taking so much time that it puts you effectively out of the plot - by the time you come back many weeks later, the adventure will probably be over. :)

Not.

But definitely tonight. Turns out last month's full stats are a mess (I sorted them out when I published the summary, but I didn't save the corrected version), which means I'll have to take the full stats from two months ago and add the top posters ranking from last month. Won't take long. I hope.

Imban is obviously married to Linda. Drakey and Mariann are two aspects of the same entity, and Jeff Vogel is in fact the eleventh incarnation of Vishnu, while Richard is the current head of the Bavarian Order of Illuminati.

Campaign Against Illiteracy: Chapter I - Piracy in General

Of course not, and Jeff Vogel is perfectly within his rights to prohibit the mention of hex editing and ban discussion of pirating his software. Not least because he is running these boards, and I can understand that he doesn't want to pay for people discussing how to steal from him.

Note, also, that the article does not argue against the immorality/illegality of piracy, but rather against wasting overly much resources on fighting it.

In fact, taking Jeff Vogel's response to a mail when I alerted him to a crack site,

quote:
Thanks for letting me know. We don't worry too much abouit [sic] hacks. Crackers aren't our target audience. They never pay anyway.
It would appear that he has rather a similar stance.

I'd take the time to read it, but an argument that hinges on "if you disagree, die" puts me off. I prefer to be convinced.

On second thought I must admit that this is a highly intelligent article that is unjustifiably pulled into the mud by Itsuart's post. You shouldn't go into marketing, sir.

Although you did prove the line "developers have egos". You're a programmer, right?

Time for a change? in General

1. No and 2. Never. The crashes don't outweigh the nostalgia, and a new board just wouldn't feel the same. The quirks are part of the experience.

Okay, not sure on the "Never" part. But I am sure that if a new board is ever established, a lot of the oldbies won't come to grips with it and drift off to Desp and Polaris, never to return. But whatever happens, the community would be a radically different one.

3. I like Invision best (both Free and Power Board).
Ezboard works if you have nothing else except too much money to spend (or of course the same reason as above, ie. the community doesn't like change), but they recently crashed without backups and ergo suck.
phpBB is fine, but after all those security holes it will be some time before I believe it's safe now.
UBB is... interesting, but I get the feeling it gets unstable with a large community.
vBulletin can handle literally millions of members and posts; the first thing that gives is the server, not the forum (seen that happen a lot on Jolt forums). I don't like it much, but then I'm prejudiced against vast communities; I find them disorienting.

I'd note that the first board I ever saw was an ezboard, the second UBB (this one), the third Invision Power (Polaris) and the fourth vBulletin (NationStates), and the fourth was the only time I didn't find the differences to be an immense change for the better.

Invision Power might not be the best all in all, but InvisionFree is definitely the best free service available. (Yes, I'm aware they are different companies, but they use the same system).

For some reason all Invision Boards I've seen have been tiny, all ezboards have been small to moderate size, all UBB forums have been large, and all vBulletin ones gigantic (in terms of membership).
