Oh I forgot, unaligned is good too because you get to avoid pissing off any of the sects, plus you get to buy spells from Phariton.

The Barzites are the best fun, score lots of canisters and megalomania and a cool picture at the ending.

For the more high-minded afternoons, there's alsot the Awakened: very satisfying to play, plenty of rationality and nobility.

Since you asked for spoilers:

The barriers can only be brought down by quickfire. In Avernum trilogy the only way to generate quickfire is by using a phoenix egg. You can obtain one from Rentar-Ihrno, in return for recovering her tome. Rentar-Ihrno is in Egli.

Assume you are talking about Avernum 1.

There are six crystals to collect, and when you have them all, you go to a little cave hidden in the rocks north of Cotra. You use them to repair the cave and then it becomes a place you can go to heal and refresh periodically.

Only nearly crashed the computer? You're doing well.

I have lost count of the number of times I've crashed/locked/frozen/erased a machine. Call me an incorrigible dabbler.

This has been discussed quite a lot; have a look in the archives. Basically the problem is lack of originality (Jeff actually admitted he got about 10 zones in, realized "hang on, I'm writing the same damn game again" - and then carried on anyway). This, coupled with the truly irritating boat travel and the comparative lack of options when compared with Geneforge 2.

Actually there were a few good things about Geneforge 3, and I still enjoy playing it on some levels. However the sheer repetitiveness of the plot makes it suffer in comparison with other spidweb games.

Edit: added hyperlink.

A cheap, new, electric cooker costs around £250 - which equates to around $500. Example

Relatedly, in the UK the government makes grants or loans to poor families who can't afford to buy certain essential items, including cookers. (Having said that, the social fund is poorly administered and almost no one has heard of it...)

Geneforge 4 wins it, by a country mile.

Geneforge 1 had the most originality, but a more primitive engine. 2 and 3 are no competition. 4 is a brilliant combination of intricate plot with whiz-bang engine.

Did you already have any living tools in your inventory? Because if so then you may have lost it.

From Schrodinger's FAQ:
quote:

In one of the cryoa nests on this level, you'll find a living tool that has X for its number.
Notes from Alex:

1. Most people carry living tools, in which case it's like 0 living tools - it
simply disappears.

Does anyone actually believe this a productive discussion where either side is actually listening to the other. Or are they both rehearsing their preconceived viewpoints in the hopes of wearing down the other side. It's unbearingly painful to witness.

And remind me again, what precisely does this thread have to do with Spiderweb Software and its games?

Yes exactly, you need to get to the top floor. Destroying the golem-creating crystals is unnecessary.

You need to run through the basement level and enter the north stone circle, where the 4th power crystal is that you need to destroy. The basement is a mirror/beam puzzle I seem to recall, you need to open up a route to the northern exit.

You're probably right; as damage avoidance is a hidden stat it isn't immediately obvious. Was a very useful bug in Avernum 4, though :)

I have been reading this thread for four days and only just realised what room you are all talking about. (Duh, me no learn so fast.) Anyways turns out I never entered that room in any of my games, so time for each of my characters to go and clear it out...

The Lifecrafter finds this pathetically easy, his wingbolts and drakons escorts kill the shade in the first round before it even has a chance to summon its undead friends.

The Servile gets in a good hit and is annoyed to see he has been slowed. However, as his first move was to mass energize his drayk pets, the shade still dies in the second round, before any of its friends gets a chance to act.

The singleton Infiltrator casts two kill spells, shrugs off the attacks of the summoned undead, casts kill twice more; end of combat.

The good thing about Tek's spectral dirk is that you can get the benefit of its defensive capabilities without sacrificing your attack effectiveness: by storing it in a quick use slot you can exploit a bug to get the benefit of the +10 damage avoidance without equipping it.

I always name my creations, so that I can tell them apart from my foes. E.g. when the game description says "fyora misses (40%)" I want to be sure that's an enemy fyora not my pet.

You need to go to The Castle and get the crystal box quest from Houghton before he will lower the barriers.

It's the third quest Houghton gives you.
