Is it just me, or is magic pathetically weak in this game? in Blades of Avernum

I found Beast Ceremony useful as a singleton, casting it before outdoor battles. As for Major Blessing, I found it one of the more useless spells in Exile - the bless it cast on you was pathetic, and overrid your previous blesses.

Dr. Seuss Is Better Than Shakespeare in General

That's a rather sweeping statement to make, BtI, that only "puerile adults" can find any enjoyment out of Shakespeare, a statement which is simply not true. Granted, some of the comedies are outdated (though I enjoyed Twelfth Night) and Romeo and Julliet has been warped beyond expression by modern adaptations (though the Baz Lehrman version was a fine film), but many of his plays are inspired, and I'd be hard pushed to name a better playwright.

I fail to see the value of high culture anyway.

On the matter of Dr. Seuss, I've never been particularly impressed with any of his stories. As for Harry Potter, poorly written as they may be, they are still very readable.

That'll teach me for storing images on MSN - it appears that it has consigned my image to the void. Good riddance.

Having looked at that image in Safari, I think we can all agree that Kelandon can knock any of us to the floor. Except maybe Rosycat.

Excel both gives and receives when I click on that link. Much as TGM does when he whines too much.

The only picture of me I can find on the Internet is one of me looking fairly sinister in a suit, and is therefore not suitable for publication.

I'm sure we've all read the chain e-mail which gives all the absurd laws that Leveticus puts down - selling your child into slavery, I believe, was prominent among those things found acceptable.

Banning homosexuality is a perfectly reasonable thing to do for a fledgling tribe/religion. How is your tribe going to achieve dominance over all the other tribes if a good 10% of their population isn't even bothering to reproduce? Rules like that simply need not apply anymore (the reverse might even be true - it'd be beneficial for places like China to have more homosexual people due to insane population levels).

The upshot being that most Christians that aren't on the lunatic fringe take certain portions of the Bible with a grain of salt.

That particular "feature" of BoA bugs me to the extreme. I'm hoping that we can choose which kind of rectangle we want in future versions.

I'd just like to differentiate myself from those who watch Eurovision because they like the music - I watch it because it makes me feel smugly superior about my taste in music.

I always like to play count the instrument whenever I watch the Eurovision Song Contest. For some odd reason, I get an odd feeling of pleasure from the whole event.

Am I the only one here who opposes nuclear power?

It's certainly not a cheap form of power. When everybody had the idealistic dream that nuclear power was going to solve all their problems very cheaply, they forgot to factor in paying Securicor to guard the waste dumps for hundreds of thousands of years. In addition, though I hate to be a terror scare-mongerer, there is is the little issue of some nasty people getting hold of nuclear power and causing mass destruction. As use of nuclear power increases, people will inevitably become lax about the security of the power plants, leading the risk of nuclear terrorism to increase. There are people still dying of radiation related cancer in Hiroshima and Chernobyl. It only takes one lapse of security to send the world into a nuclear winter (OK, maybe two or three).

Nuclear power is only at the state it is today because billions of pounds and dollars have been poured into its research - and in a lot of branches of research, nuclear power failed miserably. If alternative power had had the same amount of money poured into it, I have no doubt it would be in a similar situation.

There's also a whole school of thought that says the increased use of nuclear power will inevitably lead to a police state - but I'm not going to go into that, because I'm not nearly well versed enough in it.

I'd disagree - the purpose of many fights is to make you rethink your strategies. Generally, I think that having to work out a fight's weakness adds to the fun, even if you do have to reload a few times.

I may be fairly rare in terms of Spiderweb, but I'm one of the few on the left here who doesn't support a change in the government system - I don't believe simply a change in the system would solve all of life's problems. I'm a socialist at heart.

I don't believe that anarchists truly have a problem with community committees over-arching to provide services like water and sanitation - it doesn't violate the anarchist's principles.

I fail to see what you base the belief that "it won't work" on. I'm surprised you haven't wheeled out the tired old statement - "But anarchists don't believe in law! Everyone will start killing each other if we don't have law! DUH!!"

I'm not an advocate of anarchism, never will be. But the problems you cite about anarchism are not the valid ones.

I'd also like to say, that in Britain, Rupert Murdoch has far more political sway then half of the ruling party.

I'm not disputing that - however, Andrew Miller could have had the presence of mind to interpret Alec's comment on anarchy as meaning the second definition.
