YES... well... not yet. I'm making it! I already have the plans on paper. No one else use that idea or I'll... do something...

Actually, I started making one for BOE (back in the BOE days) but never finished it. I never will, obviously, so I'll just use the stuff I made for that for BOA. FalcataG helped me with it, but then he left and I never saw him again. A sad story really...

Oooo... Drakey with the smooth cover up.

Ok. So that makes everything I've done so far edits.

Again, I agree with somebody and have nothing else to say...

ACTUALLY I do... The idea of 'original' should apply only to 'original in a contest'. Like the previous poster so well put out, who cares if it's in a scenario? We all play different types of scenarios, so it could be original to us and not to another.

And a question: what constitutes an editted graphic from a complete ground-up graphic? Would ground-up be able to use a template? I'm not sure... and I don't remember past BOE contests enough to tell the difference.

Question about BOA in Blades of Avernum
Guardian
Member # 2238
Profile Homepage #1
Well since no one has replied to this yet, I will.

This is a good idea and everything, but I believe the reason it wasn't in any games before now is relavent to a problem with the game engie. I could be wrong, but that's the most logical thing. Of course, scripts will enable this; but as you said, you wanted it OUT of the editor. It really hasn't been gone over before, so we don't know what Jeff is doing. Perhaps he added it? Doubtful, but worthy of hope.

Well... I haven't released any (well one thing at Lourve) of my stuff. I'm a picky person about people stealing my stuff and doing cheap recolors/minor editting. And besides, the stuff I'm doing now is very scenario-specific to my scenarios. It's up to you as to what you want to do, but I say go ahead and release the generic stuff, and hold onto the more original, better quality graphics.

The whole point of the Avernum trilogy was the copy the Exile series with a new, 3D (kinda...) engine. If you want a 4th installment, wait for BOA to come out.

Oh. Well see I told you I probably wasn't right. And yea the idea didn't seem like it could work that well. But it was a GOOD idea so I had high hopes. Goes to show that most good ideas usually won't work... (you guessed it, I'm a pessimist)

Yes yes yes... but the point was to get more indepth information on some of the lesser known events, such as the First Visitation. There's plenty more, that was just an example. Such characters that we don't know anything about (Karzoth, Thralni) could come alive, will vibrant detail. That was the point. But it's not happening. So we should stop talking about it...

Reply from Jeff on the book:

It is one of those things I would love to do. The problem is time. Between
the multiple games I'm working on, other projects, and raising a toddler, I
just don't have time for a lot of things it would be really cool to do.
Sorry!

Relating to Churl's post: Hey you mentioned Carmack! That suprised me for some reason... most people here aren't really gamers... they're just casual players of Spiderweb games. But yea... that's off topic.

As far as doing the stuff on your list, besides what Drakey's said (which is correct), you should search for the newerly (if thats a word) released scenarios. I remember a BOE topic not too long ago about questions for jokes to be put in a scenario. Meaning, of course, that if that scenario was finished, it did give a chance for the player (i think) to give a night of stand up. Comedy that is...

Correct me if I'm wrong... I usually am about BOE these days. I don't hang around the BOE forum part so don't expect this all to be right.

:( you like ruining people's days, don't you Drakey. Well I'm sorry you don't find a history book being a good idea. I really am. Well without Drakey's support, it's bound to never be done. Oh well... it was a good thought while it lasted...

Haha... only HALF-jokingly? He better do it after the release or I WILL kill somebody.

Edit: Oh yea, I already went ahead and e-mailed Jeff with the initial idea. He usually (ie. always) responds quickly so I should get his opinion on the matter by tomorrow. THEN we can discuss the little details.

Great. I think I'll e-mail him now about. If anything, just to see what he says.
TO ANYONE: If you'd like to see this happen (the book), e-mail him as well. More the people we get, the greater out influence.

Exactly. And maybe it's just me, but "boring" history has never been boring to me. I love history. It was always my favorite subject.

And I've just had an idea... Jeff should write a book or something about the history of his world. An in depth book. I would definatly buy it!

Well that's you. Some of us prefer to play role-playing games as, amazingly, role-playing games. Not just action games. Don't get me wrong, I love action games. But to me, an RPG has to have much more depth than how much damage my sword is going to do. And usually, a living, evolving world helps to create that feel of... uh... something...

Churl, your mind works wonders. And I love the CLICHE thing!

Just a side note: I feel the over-all purpose of linear scenarios would be to compel the user to complete what's next. Excite him!

"WOW! You've just slain this massive beasty CLICHE! A key falls and you now need to take it to a door. But which one?"

Get the idea? One needs to make the player feel like something has been accomplished and there is a sense of urgencie (sp...) to move foward with the plot. Open-ended just says:

"WOW! You've killed the CLICHE! Go back to Fort Over-used-name to collect your reward..."

That, to me, takes the fun out. Woopee... more gold... I've seen a lot of people leaning towards the open-ended side; they see it as a chance to let the player do what he wants. And that's fine, it has it's place. But a realistic release-age time limits one's ability to create these.

Edit: I mean not to brag, but I feel my scenario trilogy I'm planning in my spare time, is rather inventive. I don't want to give my ideas out, but let's just say that the choice made in the first chapter leads to what you'll be downloading next. Even more, it'll be pretty much to same maps for the two alternate sides. Now wonder, and wonder hard at what that's supposed to mean. Then maybe you can tell me

I'm gunna go fix my alias name...

Hah Drakey, I'm aware of that but I meant in a playing form. I realize I should have been more specific. Yea I'm quite aware of the history of this "universe". My scenarios will actually show my version of some bits of history. WHAT I MEANT was that I wanted to see how other users interpreted this grand-scale place of wonder. Sorry for the confusion.

Only the beginning: Open-ended scenarios require much more build time, as there is more material being put. Linear scenarios have to made sure they are working right, that indeed everything works in the line it should. I personally prefer (designing) linear scenarios. That way you make the user does what you want. Kind of like a D&D Dungeon Master, except not that attatched.

Yea you're right. VoDT wasn't that original I guess. And neither was ASR wasn't that much either. AND it's a shame that people didn't like Za-Khazi Run, because I loved it. For once I actually felt I did something useful.

And no, I've never played Albion. Never heard of it either. I'm going to look for it at bluebyte.com. If that's not the correct site, post a real one, I wanna try it out.

.... I was referring to any game before then. As in a quick journey across dangerous lands to save a fort from certain destruction? That was original. Let me know when you find a game with a similar plot. THAT is what I was talking about. Please don't take me for a fool.

Alorael is right about the wish list. It's useless you even mention what we want (now or ever :P ). The window issue is a bit frustrating, but we've dealt with it with all the game so far, one more won't hurt.
