I just finished reading William C. Dietz, When All Seems Lost -- part of the Legion of the Damned series of military science fiction. This was an excellent piece of military science fiction. The president of the Confederacy of worlds is captured by alien bugs, but they don't realize he is the president. He and his compatriots are sent to a bug forced alien labor camp to build a space elevator. The Vice President is trying to prove the president is dead so he can take over. A secret cyborg and walker crew is sent in to rescue the president. Cyborg spies, bug treachery, an evil turncoat human. A lot of fun to read. -------------------- Wasting your time and mine looking for a good laugh. Star Bright, Star Light, Oh I Wish I May, I Wish Might, Wish For One Star Tonight. I finished reading Our American King by David Lozell Martin, oil has run out, and the country has collapsed, the super rich have formed themselves into armed gated communities. The story begins with a starving university professor and a woman convincing a man he should be king. They succeed and it turns into a left leaning political farce, where if you have joined the king you wear string on your left hand. There are a lot of moments thrown in. The most dangerous marauders wear shower hats and wedding gowns and are called Patagonians. The Canadians are America's worst enemies. It gets more ridiculous from there. A light read that is at moments too serious. -------------------- Wasting your time and mine looking for a good laugh. I finished reading A Taste of Magic which Andre Norton wrote the outline for and Jean Rabe finished. It is a classic revenge story with the blood oath, village gets destroyed, heroine swears oath to get the killer. The difference is that this has a slight twist, instead of a brother against brother, it is brother against sister in the end and the evil ruler is the empress not the emperor. It makes the story kind of interesting. The magic in the story is the magic of taste and tracking. -------------------- Wasting your time and mine looking for a good laugh. I'm objecting to the safe box design for political opinion. Every interpretation automatically leans to an accepted radical or otherwise opinion. Authoritarian, Libertarian, Capitalism, or Communism are pretty well drawn ideas of political thought. There is nothing particularly thoughtful about the positions. These are the de facto expected positions on the political spectrum. Evil communist, good capitalist, evil authoritarian, good libertarian. It is a caricature of political thought. A rather amusing one at that. The multiple choice is even more ludicrous. You give exactly four answers each supposedly tied to a particular quadrant in the test. Somewhere there is a graph which shows what each is supposed to believe in a particular quadrant on average if you are a communist, capitalist, authoritarian, or libertarian. Statistical measurement of peoples beliefs is a way to control ideas and limit peoples originality of thought. And you wonder why there haven't been many new political systems that have been created or designed recently based on an ideal. It is precisely because of this kind of boxlike control. -------------------- Wasting your time and mine looking for a good laugh. I don't feel particularly powerfully affected by these statements. My mind is not part of Oceania, the wonderful place where 2+2=5 . Why should I feel for someone who wants me to make definitive statements about what I believe so he can put me in a funny little graph. Our race has many superior qualities, compared with other races. Our face has many superior qualities compared with many other faces There is now a worrying fusion of information and entertainment. Information and entertainment have always been fused together. Controlling inflation is more important than controlling unemployment. Smoke and mirrors is more important mirrors and smoke. All authority should be questioned. Question authority. All people have their rights, but it is better for all of us that different sorts of people should keep to their own kind. All gobs have thugs, but gobs should stick with gobs. There are no savage and civilised peoples; there are only different cultures People are not savage or civilized, there are only societies. Although the electronic age makes official surveillance easier, only wrongdoers need to be worried. Because surveillance is easier to do, only evil people should worry about it.... The businessperson and the manufacturer are more important than the writer and the artist. The ticket salesman and the t-shirt maker are more important than the journalist or the sign painter. Charity is better than social security as a means of helping the genuinely disadvantaged. Charity and social security both suck to live on. Pornography, depicting consenting adults, should be legal for the adult population. Pornography= I'll know it when I see it. I think you would have to be brainwashed to accept more than half of these questions on this test. A lot of the questions are rhetorical questions based on outmoded ideas. This is the kind of test where I would ask them to rewrite the majority of the questions so they could be answered in a clearer manner. You can put several dots outside the box for me meaning independence of thought. Also independence of vote. I am sure there are a few who think like this when offered these kinds of questions. I found that I could honestly give a different answer than the one available on this test quite a bit of the time. Hello, I just finished reading Making Money by Terry Pratchett. Another story with Lipwig Von Moist, this time as head of the bank. It is a nice light read, not quite as good as going postal, but still a lot of fun. Plenty of puns, including the golem standard... -------------------- Wasting your time and mine looking for a good laugh. I've just been reading http://www.robertcrais.com, Robert Crais who is a hard boiled crime novelist. I like the two protagonists, Elvis Cole, and Joe Pike who are detectives. The writing is crisp, full of violence, and interesting. I finished reading the Watchmen and The Forgotten Man. -------------------- Wasting your time and mine looking for a good laugh. I started reading Halted States by Charles Stross, this is a near future book about 5-10 years down the road. Some people playing orcs and a dragon have robbed the central bank of a giant MMORPG repository, they have stolen all the golds and loot which costs a fortune through ebay, paypal and other sources. The company which owns the virtual repository call the cops to solve the virtual crime, they are going IPO soon and the crime will cost them a lot of money. It is quite amusing and often on point about this group of people... Kingdom of Loathing, the best MMO ever created, http://www.kingdomofloathing.com I haven't played MMO's for a little while, but I remember that you just can't beat some of the jokes in this one. Have a chefs hat, a martini, and a spork. If you really want a super small downloadable RPG, there are two of them at http://www.rakeingrass.com -- Styrateg, and Undercroft. Short.. I would recommend you read Jeff's columns, they are part of various magazines on roleplaying games. I am reading Tony Dungan, Quiet Strength, an autobiography about the first African American professional head football coach. It runs, football, god, family, more football, a quote from the bible, travel with family to a new football team location, inspirational statement, statement about leadership. In a way it is actual kind of very calm reading and very relaxing. -------------------- Wasting your time and mine looking for a good laugh. If it's 3D, it is probably a single character game. Building a whole party in 3D would be nightmarish if it is the first time you are doing the game. It will probably be a fantasy game because that is what he has done before. It will probably be a conversion of Blades of Geneforge into a single character 3D environment. Maybe, it will have some unique settings which he hasn't tried before. -------------------- Wasting your time and mine looking for a good laugh. A cop is a respectable job for a steady even handed, physically fit person with a good command of the english language. However, we are talking about turning people who like to kill small animals, start fires, play violent games, and do experimental things with alcohol and drugs into cops. The mind set doesn't fit. It might work better if you chose something different like smoke jumping, drag racing, extreme sports, construction demolition, etc. -------------------- Wasting your time and mine looking for a good laugh. Back to my reading habits. Having been playing Nethergate twice, I've gotten slowed down a bit. Plus vacation time oddly gives me less time to read because of my commute. Anyways, I actually went to a bookstore and bought two paperbacks which I can't get at the library for some reason. The First is Man Kzin Wars XI, edited by Hal Colebatch. This one seems to be very focused on the protectors and less on the kzin. I also bought, Midnight Tides by Steve Erickson, part of the Malanzan books of the fallen. So far, I have really enjoyed the series. -------------------- Wasting your time and mine looking for a good laugh. Star Bright, Star Light, Oh I Wish I May, I Wish Might, Wish For One Star Tonight. They are gone from our world, but there is nothing stopping us from going there if we find the keys to going to fairyland for some reason. There are after all multiple versions, the French and English fairyland is very different than the Celtic one. Maybe someone is invading fairyland and bringing stuff back to take care of an issue the Saxons had some pretty mean stuff when they conquered the angles. They don't come here, but we go there, that is what happens in the fairytales after the celts. Not only that, but the church doesn't like you going there, neither do the fairies like you visiting. Hmm, this may have been hacked to death, but why not a medieval style nethergate, however instead of using the celtic stuff, using the blue fairy books, the red fairy books, and the old animal tales. You might run into Reinard the Fox, Puss In Boots, Jack, Tom O' Thumb, and other characters. You could also have trolls under bridges, sheep and cow stealing giants and all the classic tropes. You could use a lot of themes in this, the end of the old critters in England and Ireland, the introduction of the church, and a few other things. -------------------- Wasting your time and mine looking for a good laugh. That was kind of fun. What do you do with the two dragon scales if you are a Roman? One for killing the dragon, the other found behind Reptrakos hall? I could enter the first two sections of the Hall of the Lamp, but not the third section as Romans. How do I get into the third part? I thought the spirit in the hedge maze was going to give me some clippers to escape. It just says you can leave now. It would have been better if he gave you some magical hedge clippers to escape. :P [ Monday, August 20, 2007 17:41: Message edited by: I'll Steal Your Toast ] -------------------- Wasting your time and mine looking for a good laugh. I've found getting the haste potion early and being able to make haste potion changes the balance towards the beginning of the game. Having haste potions on your primary fighter and healer can make a lot of the earlier encounters a lot easier. This is especially true for the Romans. Ah, not enough reading lately. A tiny bit of advice, reading Al Gore is somnabulistic a guaranteed sleep aid, an even stronger sleep aid than watching him give a speech. I may agree with him somewhat, but I certainly can't read his material. On that thought, I finished reading Going Postal by Terry Pratchett, a wonderful and funny read on a con man being forced to revive a dead postal service, who must compete with a fantasy semaphore service. It was quite entertaining. I am looking forward to the sequel Making Money, about a con artist reviving a mint. -------------------- Wasting your time and mine looking for a good laugh.
