Avernum 1 is the best place to start, then progress to the other Avernums.
The Exile tile system is harder to live with, I think. From what I know of Ultima, you are right in thinking there is a lot in common, not least a quirky humour.

Anyway, download the demo, see if you like it, and if not, you have lost nothing. If you do like it, you can unlock the rest of the game by buying the key code...

Thanks Kyna for being so honest. I hope that things continue to improve for you and you continue to heal.
The maturity of most of the posts in this topic has been most impressive. It's a very difficult subject and proves to have touched several people here.
Thank you all for being sensitive.

Seaweed is right about some suicides: I think it's very hard to generalise.

Person A takes an overdose when he is sure his girlfriend is coming to see him: she then takes responsibility for the situation and he uses it as an emotional lever for the rest of the duration of the relationship.

Person B makes all the preparations to kill himself, taking painkillers and alcohol, and making a pool out of waterproof tarpaulin, but pulls back from cutting his wrists with a circular saw because of the thought of his children.

Person C hangs himself in his stairwell when he knows he will not be disturbed.

You can't generalise about these three, who were all depressed, and say thay were all cries for help.

In at least one case the act was a rational way out of what seemed an impossible situation.

Depression is an illness, and it can be helped with medication, and as Alorael says, it is shameful to stigmatise mental illness, compared with physical illness.

Ironically it is sometimes as somebody is recovering that they have the enrgy to act, as in the very depths of depression one does not have the will even to die.

The husband of an old friend of mine killed himself last year. It was and still is very shocking.
I felt very angry about it to begin with, and have rationalised it by saying he had an illness that killed him, something like cancer.
Anyway, it's a subject around which there is a lot of raw emotion, so please be sensitive in what you post.

General was sort of concerned with slightly more sensible things. Misc was very silly, and home to flame wars, rudeness, foolish games and... um... Gen is still not as dangerous as Misc became, anyway.

The Finns here are wonderful, even TGM.
Khoth is wonderful, even if he is in danger of getting a life.
Dareva is wonderful, and flirting online is great practice for later use on real people. You go, girl!
Guys blush when you talk to them because they are totally unprepared for it. Keep trying, even with the same guy, and he will eventually respond, having overcome the suspicion you are being cruel and want to laugh at him.

Any more questions you have for me?

This bothers me a bit because it suggests that you are objectifying bodies as sex objects rather than seeing people as individuals with whom relationships can be built. I hope you will get beyond that!

I'm not basing the statement about teenaged boys purely on prejudice. Some time ago we had an age/sex topic on which I logged the responses. Over 90% were male and these were mostly in the 14-19 age band. Okay, the horniness is a prejudice.

I agree that there are all sorts of other people out there who use these boards, including old ladies like me *cof*, but we are the lunatic fringe of the membership.

People are very strange and do all sort of unaccountable things, just because they perceive them to be possible. Even our esteemed admin has a secret second account stashed away.
Actually, some people get themselves multiple accounts to vote up their own karma. There are other twisted reasons, but that seems to be the main one.

Firstly, it is so off-topic since early on that one can hardly say all these people are interested in one topic.
Secondly, moderators are human too, and sometimes enjoy a bit of mischief. (That is a secret, by the way.)
Thirdly, the subject of girls appears to be close to the hearts of many a horny teenage guy, and that constitutes the majority of the board membership.
Therefore be surprised no longer, but rest your mind in tranquility and contentment.

And impersonating another member is a HUGE CRIME under the CoC, allowing the perpetrator to be ritually disembowelled before being thrown out into the dark chill places where invisible newbies are eaten.
