Well, one's own mistakes are the hardest to spot. Where have I slipped up? Actually I will probably be changing my sig soon anyhow so I suppose it dosn't really matter.

Hmm. Well, the obvious mistake is that you've spelled "maybe" as "mabye." Other than that. there's a grammatical mistake in the first sentence. As "population" is a collective singular term, the correct way to phrase the second part of sentence would have been, "half of the world's population is below average intelligence."

Painfully ironic, actually.

One could argue that the "Therefore" in the second sentence deserves a comma. Also, saying someone is below average intelligence isn't really correct subject-subject complement agreement: maybe people have below average intelligence, or their intelligence is below average... but you can't really define someone as being below average intelligence.

Probably not. While it's gotten sidetracked, it's not actively bad, so it's more likely to die from lack of interest rather than having a moderator cut it down.

Good grammar is not necessarily a function of intelligence.

Exactly! And the same thing for book smarts. You don't need to know every line of every book to be happy in life. Everyone's happiness is achieved in a different way, some people don't even go to college.

Tis true, tis true, but it certainly helps. And it's far more enjoyable to read. Relatively speaking, of course.

If you have the ability to use proper grammar, there should be no reason not to use it. Those who aren't educated and thus aren't able to employ their native tongue with much skill are most certainly not stupid for it (might be stupid for other reasons, but you can't know what you haven't learned). What I find really annoying is when people who've had a fine education and know how to use their own language eloquently make grammatical errors out of sheer lazyness. AOLspeak is a rather fine example of this.

On a slight tangent, I do my best to use perfect grammar and spelling on instant messenger, and use abbreviations rarely. When one gets used to sticking a period after a sentence, or typing "you" instead of "u," one finds that they type at the same speed as anyone else.

Punctuation especially grates on my nerves, beacuse many people who would otherwise be rather fine typers of the English language find it somehow awfully inconvenient to use those three extra ATP molecules required to press down the <shift> key while sending messages around.
