Simple color shifts are pretty pointless to post as custom graphics, or as edits because they're so easy to do that anyone with Paintshop/Photoshop can do it with a handful of clicks. If you look at the Avernum Series, this was one of the most disappointing aspects about the graphics. The difference between a slith and a slith warrior and a slith chieftain was nothing more than a few cheap hue/saturation morphs. Yes, I am guilty of basically having done this for my Dryad, but that was just a beginning graphic for me. As soon as I do another, better version, I'll ask Drakefyre to remove and replace it... I'd better get on that. The Nephilim are a very sketchy topic to discuss. On the hand of game statistics they're pretty pathetic as NPCs. However, in story form, they, like any opposing force to you/humanity, are something to be generally feared. In the history of Valorim, it goes to talk about (I forget where excatly) how they Empire found the entire continent "infested" with them, particularly the "mighty Ratbane Clan". Statistically speaking, a single town Guard would be able to whipe out an entire continent full of Nepharim Cheiftains, however the same text goes on to talk about how it took waves of Dervishes to decimate the clan and take the Footracer Province. This goes to suggest that at one time the Nephilim were a race to be feared. At one time. However, there isn't any race in the game, Vahnatai included, that wouldn't be reduced to the state of the Nephilim after facing centuries of all out war with the Empire. -------------------- Is the triadmage X named X because he's really pornographic? What feature that the Avernum series lacked would you most like to see in BoA? in Blades of Avernum

*Milla*'s idea of a "wound" like spell would be nice in a lot of ways. A "magicless" spell similar to Cloud of Blades but in target form would be very helpful for dealing with monsters that are magic immune when for some reason you are unable to cast CoB due to say vital NPC's around your target. Not to say that this is at all common, but in Blades of Avernum, nearly anything is possible. -------------------- Razordisk Frisbee Golf Posts: 168 | Registered: Saturday, October 26 2002 07:00 |
What kind of designer are you and how serious are you about designing? in Blades of Avernum

As far as BoE was concerned, my best description as a designer was "Building a lame n00bish scenario with unreasonablely overdone buildings/monsters/graphics only to drop them out of lost interest and come back later with new interest only to realize how lame the scenario actually is and trash it." Then the process repeats itself. In terms of Avernum, however, my planned scenario for which I'm writing now works off a "Avernum Sequal premise" (very very dangerous) Basically I use an original baseline plot and use a great deal of oldskool Avernum characters, places, ect. The risk is tremendous because if you screw a character or reference up, you get torn to bits, but if you pull it off... -------------------- Razordisk Frisbee Golf Posts: 168 | Registered: Saturday, October 26 2002 07:00 |
Yet another question on items in Blades of Avernum

This isn't particularly a question about stats or whether a specific item would be overpowered, but rather a question of dialogue - will it be possible to write descriptions in the item stats box? In BoE it wasn't a capability, but I ask because it would really be a decent addition to the BoA engine, or at least in my opinion. I realize that even if this is likely, items with text-dialogue would be regarded the same as items with custom graphics and wouldn't likely be able to be carried from scenario to scenario. -------------------- Razordisk Frisbee Golf Posts: 168 | Registered: Saturday, October 26 2002 07:00 |
Is it possible? in Blades of Avernum

Well I'm hardly a seasoned scenario designer, and I'm hardly against "hard" scenarios (*currently preemtively writing diologue, descriptions, ect. for one himself*) but those stats are... very misproportioned, especially for a "Medium" monster. Correct me if I'm wrong, but there is still a damage cap you or a monster can do in BoA like the other Avernums. All I want to do is warn you that with those stats, this scenario might be as unbalanced as "the Seige of Sighing Mountain". (Anyone remember -that- final boss?) -------------------- Razordisk Frisbee Golf Posts: 168 | Registered: Saturday, October 26 2002 07:00 |

Backing up a bit to the issue of placeable items. - Why not make it specified where you have to say... hold down alt or shift when specifying where you want to drop something? It worked with breaking up stakable items and it helped speed inventory orginization a lot. Maybe this is an alternative to saying "NO" to the whole idea? Also, one of the most annoying things I thought was the unability to drop something in the "Get" screen. Say my character is at maximum capacity, and I want to pick something up during combat. Instead of making a quick and easy exchange I'm forced to cycle through all my characters in order to pick the item up because I don't have enough AP to stop the get, drop the item I'm exchanging, and reopen the get to pick up the item. After having been used to Exile with this option, it was very frusrtating in Avernum. All in all, it's a lot of trouble and a pain to have to deal with. -------------------- Razordisk Frisbee Golf Posts: 168 | Registered: Saturday, October 26 2002 07:00 |

So basically it doesn't look like either idea is possible... okay, how about customization of special effects? Like instead of a darkness shade for night, you can say... put in a red tint for magical effects? On that note, how about simple customization of effects period? Like changing the type of field animated for quickfire (I honestly don't think "fire" is the right term on that field in Avernum, it looks more electric) or having some special explosion on an altar that Ritual of Sanctification is cast upon? -------------------- Razordisk Frisbee Golf Posts: 168 | Registered: Saturday, October 26 2002 07:00 |

Will it be possible to create custom "sepecial item" graphics, as in the little comics in the dialoge screen (as opposed to the regular item screen)? I always though that a lot of times the guy opening the bright glowy box was a little monotonous. Also... Custom missle graphics? If not, will it be possible to select a specific missle animation for, say traps and items? Like say I wanted a Crossbow that shoots Razordisks for whatever reason, or a wand that does magic damage with the Dark Wyrm Breath missle graphic, would/could this be at all possible? -------------------- Razordisk Frisbee Golf Posts: 168 | Registered: Saturday, October 26 2002 07:00 |

I'll be brief - I'll soon submit a pack of my latest edits as soon as I can finish up two more. I've already shown 2 on these boards, but they need polishing and reformating, and just submiting 2 and then 2 and then 2 more would be annoying and time consuming for the both of us. -------------------- Razordisk Frisbee Golf Posts: 168 | Registered: Saturday, October 26 2002 07:00 |

Advanced skills beyond the original in Avernum... (Resistance, Gymnastics, Anatomy, Vahnahtai Lore, Magery, Blademaster, Pathfinder, Barter, and find herbs, right? Dread Curse neither counts as a skill, nor is is likely possible in BoA anyways.) Hmmm... That's a good question I never thought of before. May haps something similar to herb find, except with food? (Gather?) I always found it so very annoying to be marching through Footracer, getting attacked by a dozen and five groups of beasts and end up with no food in the end to rest with. Another idea I like would be something to the effect of a blademaster skill for ranged weapons (Marksmanship?). Maybe that would be unfair and unbalanced though. Something to the effect of Telepathy/something mental to aid in the casting of spells and/or dodging enemy attacks? I never designed any (released) BoE senarios, so I can't be considered a dependable idea man for what's balanced and what's not. Also, this really isn't much on topic, but maybe more of a difference between the races? I always thought it plausible for a feline Nephilim to be less active during the day, but get improved vision at night, or a Slithzerkai getting imrpovements in warm conditions to speed and strength, and vise versa to cold? As for replacement spells for Capture Soul/Similaricrum... The world of Avernum needs more wall based spells. Could of Blades just doesn't cut it alone. Maybe bring back Sphere of Cold (That was on an item, not an actual spell, wasn't it?) or wall of force maybe? -------------------- Razordisk Frisbee Golf Posts: 168 | Registered: Saturday, October 26 2002 07:00 |

quote:As stated above -- copy the original address linked. When accessed, tripod instantly changes the address accessed to their #$%@ing logo. Simply past the original address instead and it ought to work. At least, this is the remedy for a PC. I don't run a Mac, and I know little about that OS, but that's how I get around servers who whine at people posting even from their own account on message boards simply because they just -have- to have a fricking advertisement. quote:As mentioned in my previous post, my greatest graphical edit was the Draconian. You'll find it under Shawn Lonergan. I also had a handful of graphics at Rel'Han's (Nathan Hamilton's) former Graphics Compendium under the name Deah-Khan. -------------------- Razordisk Frisbee Golf Posts: 168 | Registered: Saturday, October 26 2002 07:00 |

It's literally been years since I've done any customization of any Spiderweb game graphics, but with the on coming Blades of Avernum game (Which I can hardly wait for, but I'm still very disapointed in some of the many things Jeff is leaving out.) and an increase of boredom introduced to me by the defeat of all the Avernum games, Geneforge, and so forth, I've decided to get back into the art. I used to primarily be a graphics editor, with my crowning achievement being the edit of the draconian once featured on Tim Farland's page (if any of you are oldskool enough to remember. I'd link to it from here, but the site is long dead [Spiderweb still has it up on its links page, but... they really ought to update that o.O])...anyways, I'm very rusty, and Avernum Graphics are a whole lot different than exile graphics, but I'll get back to where I was with practice. First off, my attempt were rather... crude and unsuccessful Doomguard attempt That was an attempt at a full custom. Never my forte`, but editing was always my realm. Dryad edit I was mroe satisfied with this (as you can tell I've been going for an exile styled take on already done monsters). I have been working hard on an avernum take of the draconian, and it should be done sometime soon. BTW: If these links don't work initially, its because Tripod is idiotic. Copy and paste the original address in a new window to see the graphic. -------------------- Razordisk Frisbee Golf Posts: 168 | Registered: Saturday, October 26 2002 07:00 |

I think there is a lot of potential in customizing BoA graphics, but one thing I think would be a decent idea would to maybe try to give some creatures specific custom graphics that had them in Exile III, but were just given run of the mill, ununique graphics in the Avernum III counterpart such as Empress Prazac who just looked like the run of the mill official, the Empire Archer, the Augmented [Mutated in ExileIII] giant, and so forth. -------------------- Razordisk Frisbee Golf Posts: 168 | Registered: Saturday, October 26 2002 07:00 |
