Sounds like the town data is corrupted. Uninstall. Redownload. Reinstall. Then use the Leave Town option in the editor.

I have a new version of Nethergate: Resurrection with right-click looking and the old style of movement. I will most likely put a temporary test release out this weekend and a v1.0.1 release out later this week.

I have started a separate thread for comments/questions on Nethergate. That will be the thread I read and respond to in future.

Nethergate: Resurrection v1.0 for Windows is now available here:

http://www.spiderwebsoftware.com/nethergateres/index.html

The right mouse button not looking is a bug. It'll be fixed in the next update.

Mouse movement is slightly different from Blades of Avernum. When changing directions, you don't start walking until the cursor is settled in the desired direction and stops moving. Jury is still out on the movement change. It is slightly slower when changing directions, but it gives better control.

N:R is not changing screen resolutions in Tech Support

This is by design. In widescreen monitors, if it switches to 800x600, it scretches out the game area and makes it look weird.

This way, the game looks for the resolution on your monitor that makes the game area have the intended aspect ratio. The resolution you're getting is the closest option.

"Good news! The games run fine in the OS X 10.5 beta (Build 9A499)."

There are many ways to get an advance copy of an OS. After all, Apple and Microsoft strongly encourage developers to get such advance copies to ensure that necessary software does not explode on release.

If whatever in Rosetta broke the Avernum games in 10.4.8 becomes non-broke in OS X 10.5 it will make me a very happy person.

"Maybe Jeff is just seeding the mirrors before he makes the official notice?"

I always do this. I need to test the uploads before I announce them. Nothing is stopping you from downloading stuff on public servers I haven't announced yet, but it might be prudent to wait a day. :-)

Netehrgate: Resurrection has considerable improvements from the old game. New dungeons. New quests. Redone dialogue. Better interface and larger screen resolution.

For people who have played Nethergate, I think there is more than enough new stuff to justify the $12 upgrade.

But here's the thing. It's Nethergate! Of course I didn't majorly change everything! Fans of Nethergate don't want an all new game. They want Nethergate! If I had changed too much stuff, I would have people at my door with torches and pitchforks.

As for the interface, I've been hearing people clamoring for more games with this interface for years. This will be the last game ever with the Nethergate/Blades of Avernum (basically the same) interface.

Going through and massively redoing the game was something that was never ever going to happen. The game is already good. That's why I re-released it.

Thank you, I appreciate the kind words.

"I think it's important to remember than anyone thrives on appreciation, and there's a lot of whining that goes on here, and precious little appreciation by comparison, if you ask me. I don't know how Jeff endures it as well as he does."

Developers have a very complicated relationship with their boards. In most large companies these days, professionals are emplyoed specifically to deal with boards and filter through useful feedback.

Otherwise, the developers need to expose themselves to negativity on a daily basis, which has a nasty way of getting into your head and causing harmful bouts of second-guessing about every little thing.

I welcome and frequently use constructive criticism. Adding elevations involved a considerable amount of work and new art, but I did it almost solely because the demand for it on these boards is so great. On the other hand, cheap shots, especially about graphics, are not helpful and agitate me.

But so far, the boards are more a plus than a minus, and I do enjoy sharing bits of information with the fans, so they remain.

If anyone is interested (or wants to join those who've actually accused me of stealing his music, as if I'd be that dumb), it was licensed at http://www.shockwave-sound.com/.

One more thing on this.

We can't afford to license quality music. No hot Grand Theft Auto 99 Luftballons action here. And as for hiring people to make music, well, you get what you pay for.

If we had music in our games, it would be of analagous quality to the graphics. But far harder to get used to.

Know a good thing when you got it.

Tons of people are still on dial-up. Keeping the games small enough for them is still a HUGE monetary motivation.

Also, I hate music in games. So that isn't going to change any time soon.

I will reconsider using music when I write an all new engine in 3 years or so.

"Ok. I am just moaning, and i know its to late to do anything about it."

Yes, and yes.

One thing that is pretty much a given in game design: any chance that is not completely trivial will make some people angry. Nothing I can do about that.

I might let this poll remain if you'd been able to refrain from insulting people who prefer the newer graphics in the choices. But ... no, I probably wouldn't have.

"Any chance that the pregenerated characters will be Empire types: archer, blademaster, mage, priest, war priest, and wizard?"

Probably not. I am very happy with the archetypal setup for the default characters. It is so important to give the rpg neophyte player (and you wouldn't believe how many people who will be stumbling upon Avernum 5 have never tried an RPG) a party that will survive for a while with minimal training.

Avernum 5 will have a wide variety of tactical situations and I will do my best to make sure that you have to think to develop different strategies to deal with them. That is the thinking part. If you don't enjoy that, you should probably find a different game's forums. I hear Fallout 3 is in development. It might be good.

I will not be putting riddles in any of my future games. I have come to hate riddles in rpgs for a variety of good reasons.

As for graphics, I'm sorry that some people who don't like them. But I have been saying that for the 13 years I've been making these games. We're a small company with a low budget, and I come up with the best graphics I can given the limitations.

I think Avernum 4 looks nice. Avernum 5 will have the same style of graphics. If this is a deal-breaker, perhaps there might be another forum somewhere that is more to your liking.

Phew. The world is over half done. I plan to start the beta-testing very soon. It is still looking possible for my desired November release.

The Archmage Solberg (and familiar) are in the game. Solberg has a much larger role this time around (though I was already planning this when I put Solberg into Avernum 4), and writing him was very time-consuming and tiring.

Though not near as bad as writing Anama. Doing an Anama town is basically doing two towns at once (in the faith and outside the faith versions).

I am currently working on an area that contains lots of chitrachs. I am handling this monster much differently than in Avernum 4. The basic model doesn't poison. They are in fewer sections. And I wanted to bring in a Starship Troopers feel to them. If you fight one, you're fighting a lot more, probably coming through the walls. Area-effect damage is good.

Though, as in Avernum 4 (and, for that matter, 2 and 3), most of the chitrach stuff is completely optional.

That's it for now. Back to the bugs.

I think that Rowling should have just let the other shoe drop and called the book Harry Potter and the Painfully Technical Argument About Wand Ownership.

That was how you wanted the final confrontation between Harry and Voldemort to go down? Really? Well, you're the billionaire.

By the way, thank you to all for keeping these boards spoiler-free. You have averted wrath.

Some people don't care about spoilers. That is fine. But for some, myself included, the experience of being genuinely surprised, of not knowing what is going to come next, is a rare pleasure, and it is mean-spirited to deny it.

In my advancing years and routine of family, surprise comes seldom. I cherish it when it does.

I would have taken Snape, but someone else did already.
