The folder "Avernum 5 Saved Games" needs to be in your Documents folder, and it can't be in any sub-folders.

My Faves For 2007:

Juno
There Will Be Blood
No Country For Old Men
Michael Clayton
Once

Honorable mention:
Knocked Up/Superbad

Except for the truly wonderful Once (which I saw on the big screen twice), that's pretty much the Best Picture nominees right there.

I've started to play Eschalon. I probably won't play it for too long, because I only rarely enjoy even high quality RPGs these days. I truly envy its level of sound and graphics polish. They kicked my butt in this area first time out. I am resolved to do better with Geneforge 5.

I think they need a lot of work in how they structure their demo. Something I realized from Exile v1.0 is that you need a hook to pull people in from the very first second. There has to be something about the story or the gameplay that is instantly intriguing. Putting it a half hour in is too late.

But it definitely looks worthy, and I wish them all the luck in the world. It's a tough business.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I was surprised to read that I am controversial in some circles. And that I have an Indie RPG "throne". :-)

After doing this so long, it's easy to forget that there are actual human beings out there playing and hashing over these things. Or that I really have been doing it for a terribly long time. The come-in-every-day-and-write-more-game habit is very deeply ingrained now.

But I am glad for the recognition for Geneforge 4: Rebellion. I am very proud of that game.

The above link is now dead ... the full version has been released.

The 16 bit/32 bit problem has been fixed, by the problem with the ice drakes and lizards is still there. I'll see about fixing it soon.

A Slightly Different (and much worse) Graphical Problem in Leopard in Tech Support

"If I may ask, why do the games run in thousands mode, when the point with supporting older computers is that they really need thousands mode or higher ? We've had no problem with the 3D editor running in thousands or millions of colors, as it just asks Quickdraw to select color depth automatically. Is there some reason that coupling this with a check that the color depth is at least 16 bits won't work?"

The games did run on 1000s of colors mode or higher. I put in code to make sure they wouldn't die on those machines.

The problem is that in Leopard Apple broke a bunch of Quickdraw stuff, which meant that the code I put in to ensure the games would run in a machine not in 1000s of colors mode no longer functions correctly.

So, at the heart of it, it's really a Leopard problem. At any rate, I will be releasing official working versions of the games in the next few days.

If you are manually flipping bytes in those records, you are probably doing something wrong. If I was in the mood to wager, I'd bet you forgot to add kNativeEndianPixMap to NewGworld. As in ...

NewGWorld(offScreen, 32, theRect, 0, GetGDevice(), noNewDevice + kNativeEndianPixMap)

That is the magic value that makes gworlds work in Universal apps.

"While BoA is recieving touch up work, I would again like to petition for having the load game file selection dialog window remember the last used directory. "

Thanks for reminding me. This will work right in the official release.

"I would also like to ask if you would comment on the trick to ensuring that graphic resources load properly, as this is a known issue with Graphic Adjuster, and would benefit the 3D Editor as well. I've already discovered that the image dimensions need to be byte flipped after being read in on Intel systems, but without system for testing, i haven't gotten any farther."

Could I have a bit more information on this? I'm not sure what you're referring to here. (Except to say that if you're trying to get the size of a pict on an intel Mac, you must use QDGetPictureBounds. Otherwise, suffering.)

We have created a beta version of Blades of Avernum v1.2.1. This new version should work correctly on all versions of Macs running Leopard.

The test installer is at

ftp://ftp.spiderwebsoftware.com/temp/BladesofAvernumDemov121test.dmg

This update should work. If you try it out and it works/doesn't work, please let me know at spidweb@spiderwebsoftware.com. Since testing updates on Blades of Avernum is much trickier than for the other games, feedback from the designers is very welcome.

The newest Blades requires Mac OS X 10.3.9. If you have an older Mac, the older version of Blades will still be available.

I was actually surprised that I was able to get Blades to work. I was afraid I'd have to require all the graphics in the Mac scenarios to be done in a different format. Fortunately, I was able to find a way to approach the problem that enabled me to get a new version running with minimal angst.

This update should work. If you try it out and it works/doesn't work, please let me know at spidweb@spiderwebsoftware.com.

Note that the new installer puts Avernum 4 in the Applications folder. If you are upgrading, you will need to move your saved game folders into the new Avernum 4 folder. The saved game folders are called 'Save0', 'Save1', etc. and they are in the "Avernum 4 Files" folder.

Copy the saved game folder from the "Avernum 4 Files" folder in the old Avernum 4 installation to the "Avernum 4 Files" folder in the new Avernum 4 installation and you will be able to continue your old games.

The newest Avernum 4 requires Mac OS X 10.3.9. If you have an older Mac, the older version of Avernum 4 will still be available.

It's a ordinary .dmg file, and we aren't getting any other complaints about this, so I suspect that it is an issue on your machine. A damaged file in the operating system, a program interfering with .dmg files, or the like. We're using the basic dmg format with no extras or modifications. Sorry I can't be of more help.

We have put up on our site a temporary test update for Avernum 5 v1.0.1. This new version runs in millions of colors mode, will work on new Macbooks, and gets rid of the annoying corrupted dock problem. It can be downloaded, until v1.0.1 is out, at

ftp://ftp.spiderwebsoftware.com/temp/Avernum5v101test.sitx.bin

Feedback (including just saying that it works fine) is welcome at spidweb@spiderwebsoftware.com.

If you have an older Mac that can't handle 1024x768 resolution at millions of colors, getting this version is a bad idea. We do plan to leave v1.0 available for people with old macs.

We know what is causing the problems with these games and will shortly be developing new versions of them to get them fully compatible with Leopard. We'll be updating Nethergate: Resurrection too.

No ETA yet, but it shouldn't take more than a couple of weeks.

I knew very early on that a lot of small children would really enjoy the Geneforge games. After all, it lets them make their own army of fire-breathing dinosaurs. How cool is that?

When my brother-in-law was nine, he played through a lot of the first one. He ignored the plot and simply killed every single thing he met.

I have tracked down the problem. It appears that this MacBook is the first Macintosh in, well, ever that does not support Thousands of Color mode. This is really messing my games up. They run in Thousands of Colors mode for a variety of good reasons (chief among them being compatibility with older machines).

I am working hard on a fix, and it should be out in the near future.
