Also, Adam had daughters too. Granted, sister-brother incest is no better than mother-son incest, but there's more than one way to skin a cat. Posts: 1000 | Registered: Thursday, October 11 2001 07:00 |

There's already a topic for that. Don't post that in this one. I'm sure if they want to, they'll find their way to your club to have fun. Posts: 1000 | Registered: Thursday, October 11 2001 07:00 |

In fact, birds aren't really descended from what we would recognise as dinosaurs. The split would have come well before the time of Tyrannosaurus and co. If I had to make an utterly uniformed guess, I'd say the split came in the Triassic, which makes birds as closely related to dinosaurs as you or I. Some survived past 65 million years ago Some may now be birds, plenty died out 30-40 million years ago and we've lost a lot of species in the past ten thousand years because they've been hunted to extinction. Having said that, I'm not sure what the technical definition of a dinosaur is. I have a few problems with evolution, but it's a much more solid theory than suggesting that the earth is only 6000 years old and evidence to the contrary was planted by God as a test. Not all dinosaurs died out 65 millions years ago. Some survived, in the same way crocodiles were around then and are pretty much unchanged now. Evolution doesn't happen constantly. First the genes have to be present, then the enviroment has to be changed for those genes to help their carriers survive, whilst those without die off. I'm prepared to accept the bible as the literal word of God. It defies the rule that sequels get proportionately worse as time goes on, since the best book are nearer the end. That suggests divine nature. On the other hand, if I accept that, I also have to accept that in Genesis God really hadn't got the hang of writing yet. The whole story of Cain and Abel is inadequately explained, Genesis 4 and 14 are mind wateringly dull and any publisher would have thrown it in the bin. Then there's Numbers, or as it should be called the book of Accountants. The question is whether you want a god who writes terrible prose, or a holy work which may have been influenced by the prejudices of the writers. I agree with Ed. The survey that says that intensely homophobic men are much more likely to get erections from watching gay porn than those who are more relaxed about homosexuality is a brilliant one to quote. People tend to look very frightened for a moment then call you a fag or similar. But you've planted the seed of doubt, so they tend to think twice. I think Dave, you will also notice that RoR was not talking about people who feel uncomfortable with homosexuality. She was talking about people who use gay as an insult. Blur are all right, but I do get annoyed when Damon Albarn pretends to be a tough cockney, since I happen to know that he comes from a rather wealthy family about 15 miles from here. My playlist contains Alice Cooper, Alkaline Trio, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, British Sea Power, Guns and Roses, Incubus, Iron Maiden, Led Zeppelin, Metallica, Motorhead, Muddy Waters, Nirvana, One Minute Silence, Pink Floyd, Placebo, Queens of the Stone Age, REM, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Tenacious D, The Clash, The Stone Roses and Weird Al. Also one or two tracks of random stuff. My musical tastes are mostly decided by what I can get for £5 in the bargain bin at the local record store. I remember an occasion a few years ago when some kid got in an argument with a friend of mine who's very camp. He called him 'homophobic.' He could not understand why we fell about the place laughing. Posts: 1000 | Registered: Thursday, October 11 2001 07:00 |

There is more to music than Dark Side of the Moon, Alec. There's the Wall. And Animals. And A Momentary Lapse of Reason. And Echoes. And music that isn't Pink Floyd. [ Thursday, May 22, 2003 12:44: Message edited by: Rantallion ] Posts: 1000 | Registered: Thursday, October 11 2001 07:00 |

Singapore is not a good example. Singapore and South Korea base their economic strength on strict economic controls and government subsidies. Other countries just liberalise their markets to get money from the IMF. Posts: 1000 | Registered: Thursday, October 11 2001 07:00 |

Performing blessings and lacking a TV channel to demand money through is proof of Satanic links. I had bits belly pork, well cooked for better flavour, in some sort of sweet sauce (might have been plum) with cous cous. Rice is probably actually the main carbohydrate I have, as my parents like to cook 'Eastern' food since you can use spices for the extra taste and you get a very nice meal very cheaply. I'm tending more and more towards agnostic nowadays, although I refuse to term myself that because it literally means 'unknowing' and people who call themselves agnostics are usually just atheists without the pseudo-religious zeal. I'm not entirely sure what I believe. It's a mixture of science, Church of England, Quaker and non-conformist beliefs with a large amount of confusion. At the moment, I'm settling for trying to live my life according to the teachings of Jesus. However, I've gone completely off organised hierarchial religion due to bad experiences with the way this works in the church down the road and general feelings that the idea as it stands today does not stand up to biblical scrutiny. It's still the same, Alec. The only time a police officer will have a gun is if he or she is a member of an armed response team involved in a hostage situation or something similar. Posts: 1000 | Registered: Thursday, October 11 2001 07:00 |

My apologies. Arctic still seems to be appearing as Chibi-Arctic in most threads. I saw one was TGM and assumed it was just a simple case of name-stealing. Didn't see the genuine Arctic post. Posts: 1000 | Registered: Thursday, October 11 2001 07:00 |

Israel has lots of weaponry among the people because it's surrounded by neighbours who would rather Israel was not. It's a militia issue, similar to that of Switzerland. Guns have to be kept in a guncabinet, it's illegal to tell anyone the location of your key to it, you need a licence, a visit from a police officer or somebody working on contract to the police and a reason to own a gun. My grandfather is unlikely to get his gunlicence renewed as he's 83 and hasn't shot for a couple of years. Posts: 1000 | Registered: Thursday, October 11 2001 07:00 |

I wasn't using republican as an insult. It's just that I tend to class people who agree with everything George Bush has ever said as Republicans. Hence, John Kerry or whatever his name is is a Republican. For the record, identical twins won't have exactly identical genes and plenty of things are more dependent on upbringing, but I won't pretend to understand much of that. It's interesting to note that the last state didn't rtify the law outlawing slavery until 1995. Some legislators must have had real trouble accepting that their grandfathers lost the Civil War. David, identical twins don't always have the same views. Often, their identical only in physical appearance and not a great deal else. What relevance does the fact that you're American have? Being American doesn't give you the right to insult Canadians anymore than the Finns here have a right to hate Russians or those of us who are British have a right to hate Americans. What did you mean? I'm not accusing you of racism, but it's a lazy assertion to make. I think it will see Bush re-elected. Not due to his actions, but because by and large, the democratic candidates look to me like a bunch of spineless fools who are to all intents and purposes republican. They won't oppose anything Bush does because they don't want to be seen as unpatriotic. Posts: 1000 | Registered: Thursday, October 11 2001 07:00 |

I'm all in favour of guns. Rifles, shotguns and maybe pistols if you do target-shooting. If you pass a markmanship test. And have a reason to use the gun. And keep it unloaded in a gun cabinet. It's what my family's always done. Gun control won't stop career criminals getting guns. But it might stop opportunistic gun crime, it'd certainly reduce high school shootings and you can be absolutely certain it would stop accidental fatalities. I don't care how many years you spent in the military. Not every gunowner has that experience. And if they panic, they'll either get themselves shot or shoot the very people they're trying to protect. Gun control won't stop gun crime, but it's a useful safeguard. There is a right to self-defence, but it's a right to proportionate self defence. Assualt rifles kill people. When freedoms have the power to kill, you have to question whether those freedoms are worth having. Posts: 1000 | Registered: Thursday, October 11 2001 07:00 |

I think they're considered to be better because deaths condoned for personal or political gain are things we can ignore and don't treat as harshly, whereas death due to a disturbed nature or for no real reason are treated very harshly. Posts: 1000 | Registered: Thursday, October 11 2001 07:00 |
