I can't send you and ready links. I can give you some anecdotal stuff. For example, on both Friday and Saturday night, I think I was technically binge drinking.

I'm alcoholic. My entire life is a giant binge. Or small binge. Whatever.

While not living in the UK, I was born and raised in Scotland, so I think that counts for at least something.

Don't worry... I'm a responsible driver.

Drinking is bad for you.

Danger of teen binge drinking

By Deborah Condon

People who begin binge drinking in their early teens are highly likely to suffer serious health consequences by the age of 24, the results of a new study indicate.

A team of researchers found that people who begin binge drinking at the age of 13 and continue throughout their teen years, are nearly four times more likely to be overweight or obese by the age of 24, compared to those who never or rarely drink heavily during adolescence.

Early binge drinkers are also over three times more likely to have high blood pressure by the age of 24.
-------

Binge drinking was defined as having five or more drinks on one occasion.

The study followed the progress of 800 children through to adulthood. The participants were interviewed annually starting when they were 13 years old, until they were 16. They were then interviewed again at ages 18, 21 and 24. They were asked about alcohol, drug and tobacco use.

At the age of 24, they were asked about health-related behaviours, such as regular exercise. They were also asked if they had developed any of 18 conditions in the past year, including asthma, diabetes and heart disease. Their blood pressure was also checked.

The researchers found that there were four distinct groups of teen binge drinkers:

-Chronic binge drinkers- they started binge drinking at age 13 and continued the practise between three and five times a month until the age of 18.

-Escalators - they began drinking around the age of 15 and their bingeing increased sharply and continuously until they were binge drinking nearly 10 times a month by the age of 18.

-Late on-setters - they started drinking after the age of 16 and averaged two bingeing episodes a month by the age of 18.

-Non-binge drinkers - they never or rarely engaged in binge drinking between the ages of 13 and 18.
----------

"Being overweight or having high blood pressure can be linked to future problems such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer. What we are seeing are the first warning signs of more serious health problems", said the researchers from the University of Washington.

The study also found that late on-setters were 50% more likely to have been ill in the past year, compared to those who did not drink heavily as teens. They were also 50% more likely to drive drunk or allow themselves to be passengers in a car in which they knew the driver was drunk.

Escalators meanwhile, who reported the highest overall level of binge drinking by the age of 18, were also more likely to engage in unsafe driving situations and to engage in serious anti-social behaviour, including crime.

"Young adults who either did not binge drink or rarely did so during adolescence are the most likely to be healthy and engage in safe health-related behaviours", the researchers said.

Details of this study are published in the Journal of Studies on Alcohol.

So stop drinking, you chronics! OR DIE!

Binge drinking is defined as drinking more than 3 units of alcohol in one sitting. Since the recommended maximum number of units is 21 per week and since that figure was largely devised by picking a number out of the air and halving it, there is a plausible argument that far too much is defined as binge drinking.

That said, the major problem is underage drinking. In our towns and cities on Friday nights, half the drinkers will be 14 year old girls trying to make themselves insensible as fast as possible. Why are they doing this and why are their less underage male drinkers (and those usually closer to the legal drinking age?) It's most likely the desire to grow up, and there aren't so many males because a boy wearing a low cut top isn't any more likely to be served by an impressionable young barman. Except in more rareified circles.

Myself, I don't go out drinking in town. I don't wish to worry about transport home, buying drinks in pubs is expensive and when I'm 6 months short of legally being able to drink there's really little point in going out and trying to do it illicitly. If I want to drink, it's far preferable to do it sensibly in my own home or self destructively at a friend's party.

One other factor of heavy drinking is the early closing of our pubs and bars (last orders is usually 11.) This can lead to people trying to drink as much as possible as fast as possible rather than drinking slower in the knowledge that they have as much time as they need. Yet another is the fact that historically England has had a culture of heavy drinking.

"I think alcohol is poison. It makes people retarded."

- J.E. Sawyer

Binge drinking is like pornography - you know it when you see it. The "three drinks per session" rule is pretty arbitrary - I can drink five beers over four hours and be fine. Likewise, my 18x-pound self can drink three beers within an hour and experience a level of intoxication that my 105-pound girlfriend gets when she drinks one beer in one hour.

I think it has less to do with absolute amounts, and much more to do with motivation. Obviously, drinking to obliterate your mind is not a good thing - unless you're trying to access the secret art of drunken-style kungfu. But that really goes without saying.

If I go out to a club I'll usually have 5-7 drinks over 3-4 hours and stick to water after that.
A binge for me is 5-6 in an hour or 9+ over an evening. (My "record" is 12 beers + 5 drinks I think, but that very long 'night'.)

I don't drink alchohol, and don't plan to. It's kills you level of enjoyment unless you keep drinking, and makes you do stupid things. I say be a respectable person and forget the alchohol.

And I'm 7 years underage, but that's beside the point.

Maybe if I read this 15 more times, it will make sense to me.

Alcohol is a drug, and should only be used by responsible people. It becomes a problem when people are willing to drive intoxicated. Or when they do other, stupider (well... on par) things. I'll leave your imagination to figure those out.

My sister, 3 years younger than me, was nearly raped at a party when we were in high school. Luckily a friend and I got there in time, but things were very bad. 2 people died that night; one a drunk driver, the other was shot 5 times in the head from point blank. Both deaths involved alcohol. I also lost my best friend in 6th grade to a drunk driver.

I'm not trying to tell you to not drink. Actually, as I've said, I enjoy drinking sometimes myself. But I only beg you to be responsible in your choices of who to drink with and what you will be doing while drinking.

I drink a bit, but not much. The traditional beer after a footy game or something, but only really because it's expected. I've never been drunk and don't ever intend to be - I know a few too many people who wrecked their lives with alcoholism. Besides, beer doesn't even taste that good. It's okay, and I'll drink it if someone else is paying, but it's just not worth it. I'd rather have a soft drink for about half the price.

You, sir, have never had a fine, German lager.

Herrnbräu. Mmm. ^_^

Hofbräuhaus. Mmm. ^_^

(Virtually anything that comes out of that country is better than the average piss-poor beers available here. Which is to say, the beers actually taste good- after a few of those varieties, the rest of the evening involves drinking said soft drinks with the intent of burping to experience the aftertaste. Don't get me started on the unfiltereds... o___o

I'd say something about "I know how to hold my alcohol," but that's just not true. There's no skill involved, just tremendous size. I'd probably have to deliberately try to get drunk.)

I prefer Heinekin myself. Even though I'm positive I didn't spell that right, and have no more bottles to go check.

Luckily, my Scottish blood allows many drinks before getting drunk.

A "joke" I was told several times in Slovakia (must've been lost in translation or something...) -

A boy walks into a bar and orders a beer. "I can't sell you a beer," the bartender says. "You're too young. Order a soda."
The boy replies, "I would, but I can't afford it."

Maybe soft drinks are cheaper in the US, but that's not the case everywhere.

I'm not big on alcohol myself, underage or no, but I've got a friend who drinks with his college friends and nothing has happened yet. They seem responsible, but every time he mentions it I worry that I'll ask where he is one day and someone will tell me he's dead. Eh. Little more than baseless paranoia, but still.

On a more positive note, does anyone know any traditional Slovakian drinks? I had a sip of something over there that burned like hellfire, even though it supposedly had a very low alcohol content. Very spicy, kind of fruity, white wine, I believe... anyone know what I'm talking about?

Uh, rum?

I don't drink, to be quite honest. I had a teaspoonful of irish creme at a very young age, a bit of bourboned eggnog a year ago, and for some years during my youth my family dressed up all fancy and then had wine and crackers on a weekly basis.

This is owed more to being deeply antisocial than having anything against alchohol.

From a scientific perspective, I prefer marijuana anyway. Less addictive and less psychologically and physically damaging.

Quite frankly, the only reason to drink alcohol is to become drunk. Personally I don't even like the taste of alcohol, and I can't understand people who drink wine and such just because they like the taste. Lemonade, milk and water taste better all the way.

So I drink to become drunk. Which is what people shouldn't do. Good thing I'm all anti-social, which means I rarely do it twice in a month.
