Belittling people because they have a different view is counterproductive. It may be their view can change or enhance our own and vice versa.
That's all the more reason to belittle them! If you make your opponents angry, they're more likely to be motivated to find good arguments for their position so that they can take you down a peg -- and whether they succeed or fail, everyone's a little better off by virtue of those arguments being found. Adversarial systems are so common in economic and political life for a very good reason: they work.

The participants in a debate are only rarely trying to convince each other of anything. It isn't even important whether they believe the arguments they're making. Instead, just like the prosecution and defence in a trial, they're each playing their part in a whole, and for the whole to be right does not require that any of the parts be right. Argument isn't counterproductive: on the contrary, trying to see each other's point of view would be counterproductive, leading to the risk of premature consensus.

quote:
Whenever I see scientists or anyone denegrade someone with a different opinion my trust in their position goes right out the door, because I automatically know they have an ulterior motive. They want to be "right."
If there's a better motivation for finding the truth than the desire to be proven right, I don't know what it is.

No, but you can always lower your monitor resolution so that it takes up a bigger part of the screen.

There is a difference between "trust me, it does X" and "trust me, I'm convinced it does X because I've done Y to confirm it", you know. For what it's worth, now that I know you're not just pulling claims out of random orifices I'm much more inclined to believe you, and I have no particular reason to disbelieve you.

And not everyone can say those words -- someone who at least knows that disassembling the binary is a valid way of obtaining information about game mechanics is, on the whole, more likely to know what the hell he's talking about than someone who doesn't. There are at least two separate issues here, trusting in your honesty and trusting in your competence to interpret data, and further evidence goes at least some way toward bolstering the latter kind of trust.

The thing is that Jeff Vogel hates music in video games, which makes him less inclined to include it in his own games.

I don't imagine; I know, because I've been one. As you say, personal experience is the best guide. By your own logic, nobody who hasn't been a scientist is really qualified to comment on the work scientists do.

Ah, you got the version with the dodgy graphics. Well, you can either edit the graphics yourself to change every slightly off-white pixel to a white one, or make a fresh graphics sheet from the Windows version of the graphics.

N:R is a remake of Nethergate, in much the same way that Avernum is a remake of Exile. The plot is largely the same, but the engine is different and there are a couple of bonus dungeons.

It's not really Pascal's Wager; it's just a fairly standard risk-benefit analysis using the concepts of type I and type II error.

You know, I sometimes wonder whether anthropogenic global warming might seem more intuitively plausible if we routinely measured temperatures in kelvin instead of degrees Celsius or Fahrenheit.

Quoting H.P. Lovecraft doesn't exactly do wonders for his scientific credibility, though.
