Why can't we just be happy? in General

For the former issue, they don't have the right to do that.

For the latter, that's kind of my point, except you do have the right to be miserable. You'd just be happier if you're, uh… not miserable. So look at your life next to theirs and realize that there are people that have it worse than you.

Then again, if you like being miserable, that's your prerogative. It is your life, after all.

I might be mistaken, but I don't think that's what Thuryl meant at all. And I'm not saying you should base your feelings entirely on what everyone else is going though. I'm just saying that it sometimes helps to realize that it could be worse, and it is for other people.

Summer's already hit Fresno. I'm currently wearing shorts and a tee shirt, and feeling pretty comfortable about it. Then again, it never snows here anyway.

It's funny, we have one to two weeks of spring and one to two weeks of fall. The rest of the time it's either summer (bloody hot) or winter (not quite cold enough to give us snow).

Relax. It's a story. For entertainment purposes. And you can't honestly say you expected to be glorified in any way in it, can you? I mean… pretty much everyone gets made fun of or stereotyped in some way. You're no exception, especially since you're not exactly low-key about your persona.

That's a good point. People who are going through a relatively rough time in their lives are naturally going to be more angry or stressed than someone who's at a high point. But it's all a matter of perspective. The person at their "high point" might still not be as well off as the person who's going through their "rough times".

That's actually a very good reason to do something like community service, where you might feed the homeless for a day, or maybe a missions trip to a less wealthy country. It'd really fix the perspective of how decent we actually have it in our own situations.

Always remember: it could be worse. ;)

I don't know much about art either. Though the more complex features in a person's face make things like nonverbal communication possible. Stuff like a certain look in someone's eyes and the barely-visible tension levels in the various facial muscles give telling signs of what the person might actually be thinking or feeling. It's definitely easier to detect than it is to mimic.

This is true. I think the process of maturing is lifelong. No one is ever completely mature. I guess my thinking was that many people reach a certain level of maturity before others. That is to say, for the "more mature" people, it's not so much a question of abandoning themselves in favor of the crowd. The desire to fit in is still there, but it's not ruling them.

I'm not saying it's the only reason for angry and spiteful people (if only anything were that simple). But I do believe that's a big part of it for a lot of us, and I know it's part of it for me. It sucks being fake and wearing a mask all the time, and so anyone who feels like they have to is bound to always have that inner conflict.

Nico, it could be that, as you're getting older, your perspective on things is changing. That's a part of mentally and emotionally growing more mature. It could be that you're more aware of what's going on around you, and so you're just seeing a lot more of what was already present.

Plus there's the fact that a lot of people of your age group (correct me if I'm wrong… high school, right?) are so busy trying to be like everyone else, they forget to be themselves, resulting in a lot of internal conflict. Problem is, many people never quite grow out of that.

However, I don't think it's even arguable that the human race in general is changing. Set morals, ethics, and even laws have been opened up for a lot more interpretation, so certain things that were unacceptable, say, 50 years ago, are now not only accepted, but supported and catered to. As a result, social norms have changed drastically (take the divorce rate, for instance). I think that we can all agree that no matter what a change is, it's almost always at least a bit stressful, and stress causes angst… you get the idea.

My parents always tell me that a person's attitude is their decision. I haven't quite figured that whole thing out yet (so I'm probably one of the angry, pessimistic people you're talking about), but it's a nice thought anyway.

Past all that, it's probably best not to impose my conflicted and uncertain thoughts and beliefs on everyone here.
