Yes, that's right, upgrading the board software this year.

I had three internal server errors, when trying to post this. So it might be about time to do this.

My only concern is that all the oldbies will lose their prestige-awarding member numbers, and instead be grouped together with all the forum trash that has registered in the latter half of the '00s.

Don't forget postcounts. Alorael will have to step up the pace if he wants to stay ahead of some of the newer members. :P

Hopefully the forum importer will be able to keep everything from the current boards. If not, I have to question what, exactly, makes UBB worth the effort.

—Alorael, who supposes he could step up his posting if required. He'd really rather not, though. Spamming is so 2002. Also, if PDN changes aren't possible, he will be excruciatingly miffed.

There is always the traditional "post and delete" method. :P

PS Considering that just viewing this thread gives me error messages, UBB might be getting ready to defend itself. Beware of the wrath of UBB. :P

So, is there any more specific information on when the change will occur, or will we one day just find that these message boards have shut down and been replaced?

Either that or the whole "Spammin' Salmon" thing. :P

I wonder what we'll do without a bunch of server problems? Does this mean we'll actually have to talk about the games themselves?

Considering how quickly the current web board is decaying under the assault of the spam-bots, the upgrade will probably happen sooner rather than later. Hopefully in the next 1-2 months. And we will give plenty of advance warning.

You know the admins will take all the cool new member numbers for themselves. Aran and Alorael will probably get nice ones too since they have so much on the admins.

It seems like the upgrade may not change that much. Although it would be nice to delete the thousands of bots that have joined recently.

I see where you're coming from, Nikki, and I know. It'll be weird at first, but we can all agree that change can be a good thing. I'm sure the new software will have it's endearing qualities, too. The ability to post reliably comes to mind. :P

And I'm sure we will all miss… *chuckle*… UBB… *giggle*… and all its little quirks… *stifle laughter*… but it will live on in our memories.

BAHAHAHAHAHA!

These are, as I've said, good news. But Excalibur, why did you link to the CoC in that first post? I don't see anything there, and that's after running the manual refresh on my mirror...

May this transfer be blessed by the patron saints of BBS: May the transition be seamless, the downtime minimal, the user accounts preserved with all their posts. Amen.

PPP? Well, depending on what happens, it will either begin mirroring the new forum without missing a beat (if everything is transferred without a hitch) or it will be closed forever as the UBB archive, leaving a new site to take up the job once the new board has to be pruned (which it will unless Jeff gets a new server too...). If the content doesn't get carried over, mingling the forums together in the archive would be untidy.

The text about the forum update first appeared in a second post in the CoC topic, but got moved to the top of the main page after a sort while.

I look forward to using forum software that has a built-in /baleet feature. That will save a lot of grief.

Wow, is that a possibility? That would be very nice. Although… you might miss key posts in the conversation that way.

vbulletin allows /baleet. It shows the post structure, but not the contents. Contents that are quoted elsewhere are also suppressed. It is heaven, and if a person isn't just being stupid with the function, you don't miss anything worthwhile.
