I agree that there should be a discussion before a new portal can be opened up anywhere. I do think portals should be on the table, however, simply for maximum interaction.

Formello Caves

After several days of marching, Sss-Kai and his army had finally arrived at Formello, jewel of the North. The city was still marvelously intact. The farmland around it was productive, though the people were living with little luxury due to nearly all trade to the Formello caves being cut off from the rest of Avernum, thanks in part to the Lady. The slith stopped at the first townstead he found a few miles South of the city, kicked out the people living there, and ordered his men to set up camp. It was here he would make his strategy.

Sss-Kai called his best captains as well as young Edward to meet in his command tent. He began, “Now, the Lady gave we orders to cross into Formello. I hope she doesn’t overestimate our ssstrength. A frontal assault does not seem wise to me, but if it is the Lady’s will…”

“What do you mean cross into Formello?” Edward folded his army in a juvenile manner.

“Uh, the city proper is surrounded by a river, and the Lady said to open her first order just before crossing into the city. I assume she meant cross the bridge into the city, yes, yes.”

“You scaley idiot! She said ‘before thou cross.’ She didn’t mean before you cross into the city! To cross means to meet someone. She wants you to parley with the Mayor of Formello! Damn it, man! Good thing she had me come along, or this expedition would have been over before it started.”

“I… uh…” Sss-Kai pulled out the first envelope. “Perhaps this will clear things up a little.” He broke the Lady’s wax seal on the envelope. Edward looked over his shoulder to see what the note said. “Hey! The Lady meant this command for me!”

“I don’t give a mung rat’s ass! You would do well to treat me with respect, slith. Anyone else here would surely be pleased to lead this army in your place!”

Sss-Kai’s army answered to him, not to the Lady or her sons. Yet he thought twice, and decided not to tempt the Imperials’ wrath. He opened the letter in front of Edward and revealed what the Lady had written.

“Ha! I was right, she does want you to parley! And you were right, as well. She really did mean this note for you… ahahahahaha!” Edward laughed and exited the command tent.

Sss-Kai’s heart sank as he took in the paper’s words. Written not in the Lady’s usual extravagant style, but instead in two simple words that any idiot could understand:

Go alone.

Fort Avernum

Angelo tapped the mage on the shoulder, “Well? Can it be done?”

The mage spun around, fully expecting the boy to strike him. The Lady’s mercenaries had treated him quite poorly since his capture, and so he was not used to the uncomfortably polite manner in which Angelo was treating him. “Please, I’m really little more than an apprentice, I don’t know how things like this work. I sense that the rift is not fully closed, so there is a chance this might work, but it would take a long time and mages much more powerful than me to make it happen.”

Angelo looked to his mother, seated on her throne, temporarily moved outside with them. She said nothing, instead just smiling at her son, so grown up. Angelo looked back to the mage, “Incredible. Tell me, apprentice, do your people value their freedom at Fort Dralon?”

“I don’t know what your getting at…”

Angelo looked to his mother again. It made him uncomfortable to intimidate people like this, but he also knew that sometimes such evils were necessary to survive in Avernum. “It would be a terrible thing if that fort were to fall to… the rampaging forces of chaos in these caves. These are unsure times, and without proper protection, well, Dranlon is not the fortress it once was. Just look at how easily you were captured.”

“Our works will continue without me. They would continue without Dranlon, even. As long as Fort Dolthar-“ the young mage stopped himself, but it was too late. He immediately regretting mentioning their primary base.

“Fort Dolthar? Where in the world…” Angelo looked to his mother, who tilted her head to the side trying to remember something.

Eventually, it came to her and she grinned, “The power’s fortress from the times of old, twas there the quickened gen’ral manned his hold. These mages margent vastly through the caves, mayhap we shall to canvass with these knaves.” The Lady rose from her throne and paced around the young mage. “One thousand swords did tear apart this land, yet one good mind did bring it back to stand.” She was about to say something else, but changed her words at the last second, “Those swords could turn, and to your home make aim. Unless, thy here my gateway dup again.”

The three of them looked once again to the hill within Fort Avernum. There an old and ruined portal stood, the very portal that first brought so many people to Avernum all those years ago.

The group entered the main building of Fort Avernum where the Lady sat behind her desk and began to write a letter. Angelo spoke with the frightened apprentice mage. “We could still work things out peacefully, it seems. I am glad. There is so little trust to be found in these barbaric lands. You will go back to your leaders, and, hopefully, they will be powerful enough to help us. Otherwise, I can’t speak for the safety of Fort Dranlon. You understand.” Angelo gave the mage a sincere look. The mage was not sure whether or not it was genuine. The Lady dripped wax on the letter and sealed it with her signet ring. Within the hour, the mage was cleaned up to make it look as if he had not been treated so poorly, and he was sent on his way.

Angelo contemplated the situation, “Mother, do we have any need to fear these mages?”

Lady Calpurnia laid back in her chair, “One thousand swords did tear apart this land, yet one good mind did bring it back to stand. But swords grow dull and in time will aband, and to a single mind the world in hand.”

Unique characters are usually the best. Hawthorn and Prazac from the old Exiles were awesome, but not so much Garzahd. I always liked to imagined he looked like the guy in the picture at the beginning of Avernum 2, not the black robed bearded man or guy with the cane. Vahnatai Lords have a pretty good graphic in both games.

If Aran made a Geneforge Wiki, I would happily do a ton of the entries myself. And I support the position of keeping everything canonical, unlike all that Ermarian (even the name is fanon) nonsense.

Hopefully, there will be, and the superior Geneforge will come out on top. Geneforge II, preferably. That game is everything a Geneforge game should be. Choices, choices choices! I wanna use canisters and enslave creations! Best characters, least linear, all around the best Spiderweb game.

But again, Avernum II will win because everyone here is so white. Or... something like that.

Sss-Kai was surprised to hear from his scouts that Fort Dranlon was occupied by a group of mages. The slith had hardly any mages or priests under his command at all. A battle between them and his mercenary army would have unpredictable results. This was unsettling, but perhaps the Lady would have some kind of brilliant plan for taking the Fort. He decided to go see her at once.

-

When he arrived at Fort Avernum he proceeded to the Lady’s audience chamber. Also present were the Lady’s two teenage sons, whom he rarely saw. The elder was Angelo, a quite and gentle boy. The younger was Edward, brash and arrogant, every bit his brother’s opposite. Sss-Kai didn’t care much for either of them. He went on to describe the situation, “Sss’not a particularly large group of mages, m’Lady, but a single well trained spell-caster can slay a ssscore of decent warriors, after all.”

The Lady rose from her throne and lamented, “I suffer for the realm yet art not loved? Mine greeting heart lies crestfallen for deem.” The Lady sure was putting on quite a show over this whole deal. Sss-Kai could infer from this what crestfallen meant. “That some could still repugn mine rule’s too much, when only to my bosom wish they’d clutch.”

Sss-Kai’s eyes strayed to his Lady’s ‘bosom.’ He knew what that word meant, at least. He noted how her chest was almost totally flat. This was something he always found attractive about her, since slith women had no breasts at all. He wondered what soft, warm human skin felt like, having only known the cold scales of his own species. He quickly averted his eyes once again and spoke. “Uh, worry not so much, m’Lady. My ssscouts also report that the mages have not yet finished rebuilding the fort’s walls. Though they work them tirelessly, if we moved with haste, we would sssurely have the advantage. If I take about half my men and a bunch from Duvno, I could be there in, uh, a few days.”

“Thou didst neglect to tell of walls defused.” The Lady’s mood completely turned as she moved to face the map of Avernum on the wall behind her throne. Within moments, she had hatched her next brilliant plan. “To hent thine forces, rated as you will, and to the gilted Northlands shall thy wend.” The Lady now moved to her desk in a small room behind her audience chamber. Sss-Kai and her two sons followed. She sat behind her desk and prepared a quill and three sheets of paper, each with an envelope.

Edward spoke up, “Mother, why would you send the army North at a time like this? If Dranlon’s walls are unprepared, shouldn’t we attack immediately?”

“The walls of mine own cities stress us much, to build be far more dry than to dispark. What’s worse, we’ve not the cross to undertake, and so these mages, for us, will them make. Once in our hands the Northlands lie, to West, and shall the mages hence bow to their best.”

Angelo nodded his head, “A brilliant plan, mother.”

Edward was still not convinced, “Ridiculous! I say we attack now while we still have the chance!”

Lady Calpurnia was displeased that Edward could not see her vision. She turned to Sss-Kai, “When preparation for your journey’s done, you shall take with you, this, mine youngest son. With you, he will assay my stratagems, and con he who shall rule this land by end.”

“What?!? You’re sending me with the slith?!?” Edward was infuriated. “What could I possibly learn from this… this barbarian?”

“He may lack wit, but from him you may learn, a humble kind may strengthen you, in turn.” Edward wanted to say more, but the Lady silenced him with a motion of her hand.

That done, she wrote upon the first piece of paper a few words, “Unseal mine first command before thou cross.” She sealed the paper in the first envelope and began writing the second, “When to that mayor you speak unseal the next,” the second paper was placed in an envelope. “And once that task is done unseal the third.” Now, she had three separate envelopes each containing a single order for Sss-Kai. “Follow mine word and thou shalt triumph true. Now to your task and cope not ‘til tis through.” She gave the three sealed commands to Sss-Kai, who bowed and finally exited the Fort, followed grudgingly behind by Edward.

When they were gone Anjelo spoke with the Lady, “What shall we do with the mages to the West while our army is away on their task, mother?”

“Methinks that you, mine unpieled imp, shall board. What wouldst thou do if thou wert here the lord?”

“What would I do?” Angelo was pleased that his mother had asked him. Such was a rare occasion. “Well, we shall want to keep these mages on their toes. We want them to know that we have knowledge of these presence, that they may act accordingly. That they may waste resources preparing a defense against an attack that will not come. When the walls are finished and they let down their guard, Sss-Kai will have returned from the North, and they will have little choice but to bow before our might.”

“A fair an simply plan, my noble babe. Now we need not but to sit back and wait.” The Lady sat back down at her desk, smiling at her eldest son. He would make a worthy lord, one day.

Some notes for version 2.0 of the maps:

All people who have not yet reintroduced their factions will be removed (The nephilim faction, the Looters, the Islands League, and that undead faction in Avernum). Damn, I made such cool flags for you guys, too. I'll leave Alec's faction in since he supposedly plans on participating, wherever he is.

Excalibur: I forget what valley you are talking about in Northern Valorum, can you explain to me where it is exactly?

Nikki: I'll put Perrin around where Gunkbar's Pit was in Avernum 3, that about right? Also, I'll make a new flag for your completed faction.

Tyranicus: I thought Dharmon played a part in your old King's assassination. Are they now under the new Kings rule (you said the whole Great Cave was)? I'll throw Patrick's tower under your rule as well. Does Alec still have Fort Saffron?

Guardians of the Star: They seems isolated enough to not need to move out of Valorum due to inactivity.

Note that there are tons of lands in Northern Valorum up for grabs. Get conquering!

Most people like Avernum II's music because they are so white. I personally don't think it makes sense to have an electric guitar in a fantasy setting.

Geneforge II, in fact, has the best music.

Faction: The Protectorate of the Lady

Ideology:
The Protectorate is basically the personal project of a single Imperial noble. Taking advantage of the chaos spreading in Avernum, the Lady intends to spread good old fashioned Imperial Order to those that are finally desperate enough to accept it. Many join her for the benefits of her mercenary army's protection. Those that do not are made to see just how valuable her protection can be. The Lady has recently returned to the surface, where her ideology was once the norm.

History:
The Lady was a powerful noble on the surface that was disturbed to discover one day that all she lived for, her noble name, the government she served, was all gone. She fled the Empire for her life will all the gold her small entourage could carry. She found herself in the Eastern Province of Avernum, where she acquired the services of Sss-Kai and his mercenary army.

Characters:
Lady Calpurnia: She is the Lady. Based in Fort Avernum, she is the money and brains behind the whole operation. The Lady is extremely well educated and eloquent, and her delicate appearance only disguises her merciless nature.
Sss-Kai: Once the leader of a sizable group of bandits feeding off the Eastern Province, he now accepts money from Lady Calpurnia to protect the people under her rule, as well as antagonize those who are not. A slith of action, he is currently with the Lady at Fort Avernum.
Angelo: The elder son of Lady Calpurnia. He is polite and calm, clearly the Lady's favorite, as well as heir apparent. He has a silver tongue and as well as a handsome appearance. He is currently at Fort Avernum with his mother.
Edward: The Lady's younger son, brash and arrogant. He still has much to learn in the ways of strategy and humility. Never the less, his recent aquisition of the Golden Necklace of Formello has made him the uncontested ruler of the the whole region.
Prussian: A surface world adventurer now in the employ of the Lady to help manage her forces on the surface.

Sphere of Influence:
While the Lady herself resides in an understaffed Fort Avernum, she funds her mercenary army as well as troops from Fort Duvno with money extorted-I mean taxed-from the people of Silvar and Cotra. Her son Edward administers the North, including the city of Formello as well as Fort Draco.

Relations with other factions:
Kingdom of Avernum: She had made it clear that she does not recognize the sovereignty of the old nation, whether or not it still even exists.
Disciples of Khoth: Their leader, Acrio Sulfi, is currently at Fort Avernum assisting in opening the old surface portal. Further negotiations are pending.

Summary:

Post One: Introduction post.

Post Two: The Lady acquires Fort Duvno through 'negotiation' and orders the Captain murdered.

Post Three: The Lady learns of the Disciples at Fort Dranlon and decides to instead move North to capture Formello instead. She sends Sss-Kai and her son Edward to do so.

Post Four: Sss-Kai arrives at Formello. The Lady and her son Angelo discuss the possibility of reopening the Fort Avernum portal with a Disciple apprentice.

Post Five: Sss-Kai steals the fabled Gold Necklace of Formello.

Post Six: Sss-Kai is sent back to Fort Avernum after conquoring Formello with Edward. Angelo seduces Erika of the Disciples.

Post Seven: The Lady 'persuades' Acrio Sulfi to help her open the old surface portal in Fort Avernum.

Post Eight: Acrio Sulfi begins opening the surface portal for the Lady. Sss-Kai returns to Fort Avernum. Edward uses brutal tactics to gain control of all the northern lands.

Post Nine: The surface portal is reopened. Prussian is recruited to serve the Lady and work begins to return to the surface.

Once again, I, your glorious and benevolent Emperor, have done you all a kindness. Due to Alec's failure, I took it upon myself to make a map.

I custom made it so it would be easy to edit should territories or even geography happen to change. I made it from a simplified Avernum 4 map. Blasphemy, I know, but it makes it easier to read and emphasizes the individual cities.

If I missed something or need to make a change, just let me know. I if your cities look like they should be more/less ruined, let me know. Oh, I also made everyone a flag, so if you don't like it, let me know.

You're welcome.

Edit: Oh, so far it's only a map of Avernum. If you give me a lottle more time, I can make a Valorum one as well.

OOC: This is a bit of a flashback to how the Lady took Fort Duvno.

Sss-Kai stood atop his vantage point looking West towards the Fort. The cities of Silvar and Cotra had been easy to assault, as their walls were only partially rebuilt at the time. He was no expert at siege warfare, however, and his mercenary troops were becoming frustrated and were quickly loosing moral. The Avernites in charge of Fort Duvno were actual soldiers, and he wasn’t sure how much of a chance he stood.

A messenger arrived for him, a human messenger, from the surface. He knew immediately that the message must be from Lady Calpurnia. Great, she was probably going to ask what was taking so long. Sss-Kai braced himself for the worst, only to discover that it was far worse than he could have imagined.

The messenger spoke, “The Lady is disheartened by your failure to acquire Fort Duvno in the allotted time.” Sss-Kai wanted to strike this ignorant woman. “She has thus taken it upon herself to capture this bastion, and will be arriving within the hour. That is all.”

“What?!?” Sss-Kai was taken aback by this revelation. The Lady was coming here?

-

Lady Calpurnia arrived with her entire entourage of servants. The fact that she would live with such excess at a time when most were struggling to survive made everyone a little sick, but also kept them in a constant state of awe. She rode in on a lizard drawn carriage, surrounded by her personal guard, all women from the surface. When the carriage came to a halt, the door opened, and a perfectly white hand stretched out from inside. Everyone looked to Sss-Kai. It took him a minute to realize he was supposed to help her out of the carriage. The slith took her hand as she gently stepped from the carriage. Sss-Kai kept his head bowed slightly when speaking to her.

“M’Lady, there wasss no must for you to come here, I have all things under control.”

The Lady looked West towards the Fort, “Oasis in a desert of chaos. Methinks it more unvalued than the world. Thou didst not mean to render it amain?” Sss-Kai assumed she was asking about the assault.

“Uh, we have siege weaponry readied. S’not much, but we should at least be able to sssmash the door down, perhaps ssscale the walls.”

“I shall, not here, abrook such brutish means. Be done with your foul skirmirsh for this day. Accite the captain of yond fortress hence, that I might motion for his banners fall. He shall unto me pay my homage due.”

Sss-Kai was no expert at the human tongue, but he was still quite certain that his Lady did not speak it all that well, either. She spoke funny and constantly used funny words, words he did not understand, like ‘abrook,’ ‘accite,’ and ‘homage.’

-

Captain Randisees of Fort Duvno was surprised to see a white flag among the enemy forces. He had heard of this Protectorate of the Lady. They were led by Imperials, and nothing that they would have to say to him could be any good. None the less, he left the Fort with his finest men to parley with this ‘Lady.’

She awaited him in front of the fortress with only a few of her personal guard and Sss-Kai, whom she requested be present at this meeting. She sat in an elaborately carved wooden throne, clearly a prized possession of a wealthy Imperial noble, thrice as valuable now that it was in Avernum. Randisees approached her, always on his guard, suspecting a surprise attack at any moment. It did not come, however. “Imperials, why are you here? Why do you bring an army? I hope for your sake you’re not trying to start another war.”

The Lady was not interesting in his questions. One of her servants whispered the captain’s name in her ear. “Our world is uncertain in these time. Whom dost thou serve, my Captain Randisees?”

That was the one question she could have possibly asked that the Captain was afraid of. He wanted to say he served Avernum. Yet the last news he had heard from the Great Cave was that the King had been assassinated, again. There was no more Avernum, or, if there was, they didn’t care about him or his men anymore. Who did he serve?

The Lady continued. “The people of this land have suffered much, yet thou dost hide in fortress nigh in vain, away from this our cold and reechy sooth.” The captain wanted to say something but the Lady continued. “How dost escot thou thine good warriors? How dost thou feed them, noble Randisees? With what dost thou intend to pay them kind?” The captain had no answers for this.

The Lady continued. “The people wish one to watch o’er them, and in me shall that savior manifest. They may, with me, find their security, and sith hence from me draw the strength they need. Will thou not add thine name unto my file, that all might live now free of wretched vile?”

The Captain thought for a long moment, looking to his men behind him. “We.. could never serve the Empire. Only Avernum…”

The Lady rose from her throne, pacing around the captain and his men. “The power’s days have long since passed to myth. Am I, your Lady not an Avernite? Stand’s such pedantry in the way of wish? How canst thou not see that mine path is right?”

The Captain knew he had little choice. She was right about one part, at least, he couldn’t pay his warriors much longer. He knew this Lady had control of Silvar and Cotra, the primary money makers in the region. He would have to submit to her, for now. He looked back to his men, then to Calpurnia. “I have little choice. I suppose-“

The Lady reached out her small, white hand in the Captain’s direction, with her palm and fingers facing down. She wanted him to kiss it. Randisees looked back to his warriors in shame, then gently took the Lady’s hand in his and bowed slightly that his lips could reach her hand.

Sss-Kai was impressed. Lady Calpurnia had taken Fort Duvno without spilling a single drop of blood. Oh, and he had learned what homage meant, as well.

Within the hour, the Lady’s banner was flying over the Fort in place of the sun symbol of Avernum. The Captain had gone back inside, now with a good number of Sss-Kai’s mercenaries to watch over him. The slith himself saw his Lady back to her carriage. She called him aside to speak with him privately before leaving. “Yess, m’Lady? What is your wish?

“The soldiers here will follow him 'ti death. How can I have a man of power so? My good slith friend, hear now my last command. Once we have gone, take thine most seedy men, and to our noble Captain’s quarters go. There to your art and quickly him fordo, then slay your soldiers that none ever know.”

Sss-Kai understood those orders perfectly.
