One big difference between A1 and the other two is that you can only have humans in your party. (Well, it's a big difference if you're like Dikiyoba and prefer to play as sliths and nephilim.)

There has been at least one female Guardian. In G2, there is Nora in the Drypeak Warrens. Of course, she is a pretty obscure character.

Dikiyoba doesn't mind the lack of them too much, but Dikiyoba likes the idea. Dikiyoba would also like PC sprites that are unique. The lifecrafter and one of the mages share graphics, for instance. It's not critical but would be a nice touch.

Whoops. Dikiyoba completely forgot about the dialogue where people look at you and tell you how much you've changed. Learned Pinner notices something once you've used five canisters.

The threshold is zero. Canisters are so important (and the negative effects as yet unknown) that the game doesn't check to see whether you've been using them or not; it assumes that you have been.

Or, rephrased, 5 canisters will leave you mildly corrupted--some people can tell you've been using them and you will have some unavoidable hostile enounters. 12 canisters will leave you strongly corrupted--you will have more hostile enounters and will get different endings.

Definitely start with A1 if you're planning to play all three, though A2 is the best. Dikiyoba started with A2 and had trouble playing A1. Knowing the basic outline of the story wasn't too bad, since A2 doesn't spoil all the details, but the less-polished engine was very difficult to adjust to.

There are two large crypts that you can learn stuff from. However, the one in the early game contains all stat-raising books and the second one might have a very few but isn't until the very end of the game.

You need the EXIT_STATE and START_STATE in every town script, regardless of whether you have anything in them or not. The start state is state number 2, so that's the error.

The short without any defined variables might cause problems too.

The SDF cheat is really only useful for fixing things that go wrong (or to change canister usage and reputation), since it has a high potential to screw things up if used otherwise.

There is in fact an example of an in-town teleporter in the Za-Khazi Run. There are probably several of them, actually, but I know for sure there is one in the Cunning Crypts (t1Cunning, or something like that). It works as a special encounter instead of as a specobj, but the script will look the same.

Specobj will work whenever you search the portal. Kelandon's searchblock is a step up, since it will work if the party steps into the portal as well.

Dikiyoba doesn't know why the standard special encounter setup won't work for this portal, since it's what players expect and it's easier to find a working example of. However, if you have a very good reason (like having the portal be in a location where it would be easily triggered by the party passing back and forth) then do it.

If the engine/graphics make you prefer one over the other (and you'll have to try the demos to find out), then Geneforge 1-4 and A4 have an engine similar to A5, while Avernum 1-3 and BoA have an engine similar to the new Nethergate.

This is what I was questioning, because a Trakovite ending doesn't necessarily mean death. The PC gets put to work in the Forsaken Lands if they were pro-Rebel enough. Alternatively, the movie could focus on several important characters from the game--Greta, Pol, Alwan, Miranda, etc.--and the lifecrafter would be just one main character among many. In which case, the fate of the lifecrafter would be less important to the story. Maybe "important" isn't the right word, but their fate would be just one among many.

Either way, it wouldn't be a happy ending, but Dikiyoba doesn't think there is a happy ending in G4.

Anything that's too complicated to pick is most likely quest-relevant and can't be opened by conventional means, no matter how high your mechanics skill or Unlock spell is.
