Geneforge Political Spectrum in Geneforge 4: Rebellion

Man, oh, man. I see posts like these and get very frightened.
Is it possible to just PLAY the game without spending a few hours figuring out various characters and politics?
I have played the three previous games as well as the Avernum series but this one seems to require a whole new learning curve. I am less interested (actually not at all interested) in working out stats than just playing the STORY.
What are the odds of ending up with totally lame, unplayable characters if I just dove in? Conversely, will I miss some interesting story lines if I don't dedicate a few days figuring out the various politics and backstories?

Found the reference that I was thinking of.

In the walkthrough, it says:

This is the remains of the old tower of the magi. There's a fair bit to do here. Talk to Oliver again to see what he's got for sale. At least buy his knowledge crystal. The Bladeshield charm is pretty nice, too, so you may want to go ahead and get that.

What Oliver?

Hi
Is there supposed to be a shopkeeper in the Tower colony? I thought there was a subquest there involving him.

Also, is there any way to get past the barred gate on the second floor (the one you access by taking the east staircase).

Hi
I'm off to see Khoth, but I can't seem to enter the secret passage.
I talked to the spirits outside his cave, then did away with the statues. According to Far Sight, there is a secret passage in the NE corner of the room with the statues. However, even banging my head against the wall won't let me enter it.
Am I missing something? I have been at Erika's place. I killed the dragon in the giant lands. Is Khoth teed off about that?

old vs new version in Nethergate

Erk, sorry, I'm obviously talking through my hat. Forget what I said, must have had something weird for dinner.

My question still is, though, why is Nethergate more expensive when it is, apparently, a smaller game?

old vs new version in Nethergate

Hi
I've played the "old" version of Nethergate (demo only), with the flat graphics. Because I lack attention span I just noticed that there is a newer version out with Geneforge-like graphics.

I don't suppose one can register the old version any more. I noticed that Netherworld is more expensive than the other games, yet I believe it's actually a physically smaller game, in terms of gameplay.
Have there been additions made to this game? Why does it cost more? It worth starting the demo all over again?

A search for Torvald did not find any such discussion (about this character)

Just because something has been discussed in some fashion in the past doesn't mean someone might not want to bring things up again, perhaps in a different perspective.
While some folks here seem to have been living on this forum for years, it is quite possible that others drift in and out as they discover and play these games and then move on.
It's probably tiring for the "regular" contributors here to see the same questions asked or opinions stated if the answers can be found with the search feature, but to "noobs" like me, it's all new.
Reading an old thread is just not as much fun as starting a new discussion - especially since some get annoyed if old ones get bumped up for interest's sake.
(and considering the amount of bashing AV4 gets, reading the older stuff isn't exactly encouraging to those who find the game a whole lot of fun and don't really care one way or another how one moves from one square to the next)
Oops, I think I got on a soapbox there. Gotta go!

Yo slartucker!
That's a helpful list, but hard to read because of a line height problem in your table. It's a Mac vs PC thing, I think although it displays fine in Firefox (darn that Explorer!)

Try changing TR HEIGHT=13 to TR HEIGHT=16 or some value around there. PC fonts display larger than Macs.

If that ain't it, there are other ways of fixing this - if you like I can give you a hand with the HTML. (unless you don't care for us poor, neglected PC folks... :P

Hmm, well, I got tired of beating up pylons (odd, when faced with hard-to-kill humanoid mobs I don't seem to get as frustrated. I guess it's more fun when they have a face :D

Anyway, I cheated my way out of this. Taking Epheso's advice as a hint of sorts, I used the cheatcode that makes all monsters visible. It was then quite easy to see the obvious path. Yeah, it's a cheap way out, but I got through this, got the goodies, and am back outside to have fun with this again.

Thanks to all and sorry about my rant.

You have got to be kidding me. This would mean that you have to play the game one step (grid square) at a time and reload the game every time a pylon comes into view. Is that the intent here??

(spoiler)

If I travel north (west of Fort Remote), I have three options: The east path leads to 5 or 6 stairs down, all of which end up with pylons at the end.
The middle one just leads to a bunch of golems and those zombies.
The west one has a pylon right in the middle - no way can you slide past that.
Am I missing an entrance somewhere??

Well, I'm pretty much ready to give up on this.
I'm in that horrible mess west of Fort Remote and it seems like I'm playing a different game!
So far, I've hugely enjoyed this game (having played Geneforge before Avernum, I rather like the way this one works) but I'm quickly losing interest.

I can't move two steps without freezing (that shield spell that is supposed to help prevent that is utterly useless) - whoever said you can get through this by hugging the wall is either smoking something they shouldn't or has characters that are thinner than mine.
Of course, it's hard to tell in which direction one ought to go hugging those walls - by now I'm so totally lost that I'm running around in circles.
Yes, I'm sure there is a way to get through this, but it seems to be a tedious process that is anything but fun - this is supposed to be fun, isn't it? Kinda tired of spending a half hour per pylon to get them out of my way only to find that I'm back where I started.
In desperation, I changed the setting to "easy" and am even using cheat codes now, just to get this bit over with.

My question is, is the rest of the game as frustrating as this bit, or do things get back to normal game play? If this were the end of the game I'd just quit, but I'd like to do the Abyss piece which, as I understand, can't be accessed until this quest. However, if the rest of it is like this, I really can't be bothered.

Yeah, I'm as bummed out as I sound

Got rid of the golems, but what the heck is the magic password to give to the two monsters in the south? Do I have to talk to someone in the area to get the pass phrase, or do these two need a good smiting?

Hi
When training, what is the difference between Spellcraft, Magery, and Magical Efficiency, for either mage or priest?
In which should I invest skill points for the best results?

Changes for Better or Worse? in Avernum 4

:) I like not having to watch where I step (i.e. swamps)
:) I liked Geneforge and I like the graphics for AV4. The monsters are better, but I keep running into the same blue-shirted blond guy everywhere. Must be a big family. If the same graphics are used everywhere, they ought to be less memorable.
:) Job boards. Seems less fussy than using dispatchers and time limits.
:) Unlimited arrows. While not terribly logical, it's perfect for us packrats who always hit their weight limit.

:( The dialogue in previous versions seemed wittier. Now people (in the demo anyway) just seem rude, depressed or sick.
:( Don't like the character graphics for male humans. They all seem dorky.
:( Only played the demo so far but it seems that there is less puzzling/adventuring/discovering than simply hack 'n slash.
:( Also liked the witty graphics in previous versions, on the skills screen. My fave: the anatomy one where a character is earnestly studying someone's innards.

Is there information anywhere at what level certain spell become available. I keep being told that my priest or mage levels aren't high enough for a spell, but I can't find what those levels should be.
In previous versions, I seem to remember, the level needed for a certain spell was in its description.

couple of questions (demo) in Avernum 4

I've just about wrapped up the demo and am still missing a couple of bits and pieces (I'm one of those hung up on that completion thing)

One, what is to be done with Giscard, the rich guy west of Formello? Does he own the room with the major lock just north of there?

Two, where is Harko? The commander of Fort Monastery said he was among the undead to the south. If he means Grindstone, Harko wasn't there. If I did clear him out along with the shades there, it's not clearing off my quest list. Am I looking in the wrong place?

Three, only found 6 rats and got tired of looking for more. Is this job/quest important?

When I played Geneforge, I liked the moving-around thing better than Avernun, but I wished the characters would move a little faster when covering distances. Now that they are, in Av4, I think it's just silly. Everyone zips around like some comedy skit turned on fast forward. Might be part of why some people are saying this lacks atmosphere.
Going to town to heal bothers me. Surely, the astute adventurer knows how to find some hidden spot to rest up during his travels through the wilderness. This worked just fine in previous versions where, sensibly, one cannot rest if there are monsters nearby.
Why am I carrying all this food around???
Some underground areas are too dark on my monitor. Give me back my torches!
I do like the unconscious thing a lot.

1) Things or spells that make you fly or levitate, as in Avernum

2) Gear for creations, like levitation device that adds AP to vlish, or brass knuckles for Alphas, or little doggie sweaters to keep the roamers warm.

3) Bags or pouches so I can carry more stuff.
(idea, must create an orink (sp??) to serve as a pack animal, therefore using up one of the creations slots)

4) Being able to control "guest" creations (the ones you find, rather than make yourself). The big roamer I picked up in G2 keeps blocking the way in narrow passages because he's such a wuss and won't run into a fight. I'd dismiss him but he's really good at fetching slippers.

Just a thought

Yeah, I have enough leadership to bully my way through all situations that allow this, so far. Kinda fun :)

I wonder if there is something else I'm missing. Darian also didn't give any indication that she can change my affiliation (from Awakened to whatever). Perhaps this script only works if you're still unaligned?

Hi
In Darian's Sanctuary, Darian talks about the battle betas to east giving her a hard time but does not offer a quest to get rid of them (in order to share her goodies).
She did talk about the ingredients needed to make the shield.
COuld this be because, by the time I got to her, I had already cleared out the Alphas?
I've been saying nice things about serviles and joined the Awakeners, but that doesn't seem to impress her much.

Well, time for another silly Shine-question:
I gave up on the 'final gauntlet', having grown terribly bored with running around in the dark and turning wheels. At this point I don't really care if I do find the exit (mainly because I've already played Av2 and 3, and I really dislike puzzles where you have to take a wild guess in what order to push buttons or flip switches).

However, now I made it to the platform in the lava past the Black Spire, hoping something interesting will happen (portal to the surface?) but nothing does.
Does this mean I have to go back and find the exit, after all? Beyond tedious, at this point. Or am I missing something else? I have the five brooches.
