Maybe. Or maybe that trend in the orthography was a result of French influence.
Wikipedia says "Before a consonant letter the pronunciation is always /k/; word-finally after i it is always /(IPA symbol for "ch", which my computer doesn't like)/. Otherwise a knowledge of the historical linguistics of the word in question is needed to predict which pronunciation is needed."
No wonder I could never keep those rules straight. >>;

In the British convention, it does. We just use one spelling indiscriminately. *sigh*
That's also why they spell "defense" with a c.

I've only ever heard it pronounced like "liken".

Really? I always thought that "c" was pronounced "ch" in OE, at least in certain positions. At least in that one. (Unless you're talking about something older than OE, and it was palatalized in OE, in which case I wouldn't know. I don't know if I would know anyway. XD)

Well, for one thing, I can say that I'm never visiting TCoA again. >>;;;
What, are the Jews wrong in establishing a country where they can live without being persecuted? When Israel was founded, it didn't look like there was anywhere else that fit that description. It's not as if the land already belonged to someone else and they took it– what is now Israel didn't belong to anyone. It used to be part of the Ottoman Empire, then came under British control when the Ottoman Empire fell. There is no "Palestinian" nationality whose people were displaced by the creation of Israel. Nobody really wanted that land (it's really just a tiny piece of desert with no oil or other valuable resources) until Israel was established, and now it's only being fought over because Israel's neighbours want the Jews out. Israel has taken several steps (like the much-maligned fence) toward security against terrorists, because they really need to– wouldn't you be worried about your citizens if people were attacking pizza parlors and buses to kill Jews, just because they hated Jews? Wouldn't you want to defend yourself? How is that wrong?

That's what was confusing me– it depended on what the etymology was. If it were from Greek or something, then the ch would be pronounced /k/, for example… but now that I know it's from Anglo-Saxon, it makes perfect sense. ^_^

Yeah, they're always coming out with new things and then discontinuing the stuff that, not too long ago, was new itself. Especially Nintendo, I think… my brother claims that the Nintendo DS has made the GameCube and the Gameboy Advance "obsolete". >>;;;
So I guess the point is, "if you want to play our games, shell out a heck of a load of money to buy all the new consoles, because the old ones are getting obsoleter by the minute".

*shrug* Why don't I get in on this? (My guess is that it'll be some kind of role-playing thing, for the record.) All names changed by an elaborate process of word association. XD

Luke is 16, a junior; he's got to be around 5'10" or so; I'm a bad judge of height because I'm so short. He has short, curly light brown hair. He's a bit of a nerd, and a band geek (he's a wonderful trumpet player), which seem like they would be a bit of a liability, but nobody seems to mess with him or make fun of him. He hangs out with his large group of friends, most of whom are smart and/or nerdy junior boys, which probably helps.

Christine is another junior, about 5'4" or 5'5", slender, blonde, and pretty. She has perfect, round handwriting that always looks the same, even when she writes quickly. She is very popular with most of the girls (even some of the boys) in our class, but especially with the choir/drama crowds (which mostly overlap). She seems like a nice person, but is not so nice to people who aren't as pretty or popular, even if they try to be nice to her. In addition, she has no sense of humour and has a gift for making people feel stupid when they say something funny or (gasp) tell an actual *joke*; she thinks being funny is immature.

Kira is also a junior; she's quite tall (5'7"?) and thin, and pale, with long curly brown hair. She goes out of her way to be nice to everyone, and actually succeeds in befriending lots of different people, which is admirable. Although she is an amazing flute player, she is not arrogant in the least; she's first chair in our orchestra, but doesn't mind sharing the first parts with people who aren't as good (like me, for example ^_^) when the conductor decides to switch things around. She even likes playing second flute parts. She thinks it's fun. o_O

Why eliminate "polls by new members"? Why not just close bad polls and topics, as is already done? Are you implying that anyone who has posted fewer times than you can't contribute anything useful? There are new members and then there are new members…

Yeah, that's a great way to train in Exile. Although sometimes it is annoying to have to go through one of the really huge fights, minus the main guy you already killed (Sss-Thsss, Anastasia…). But I guess if you've trained a lot between killing those people and now, it's not that hard– and if it is, there's always Major Blessing. =)

Patrick said something about a password in a "hidden bookshelf". I can't find it… all I found was a switch in a desk that made one of the bookshelves go away, and there wasn't anything behind it. Any hints?

But Avernum's demo is way smaller than Exile's. You pretty much can't do anything. The instruction manual says that the "mayor's necklace" quest is the biggest in the Avernum demo. In Exile, you can do all kinds of stuff (getting Dispel Barrier being the least of it!)– you can go to the Tower of the Magi (and get the really important items there), get two-thirds of the Demonslayer, and get four of the five brooches (OK, so maybe only 3– it's sort of cheating just to hit "buy" when you talk to that one guy and get the brooch when you don't even know that he has it, or why…). Bigger incentive to register, I suppose. =D

I'm in the same situation with Exile 2 and 3, and decided to start a new file so that everything that's going on (and what, precisely, I'm supposed to do– all the games except Exile 1 kind of run together for me ^_^) is fresh in my mind, since I didn't do anything on those games since I finished the demos.

How do you pronounce "lich"? I can think of several different ways (/leek/, /lick/, /litch/, /leech/, /like/…) but which is right? I mean, I'd feel a bit silly saying "I just fought a 'leech' for the tip of Demonslayer" if that wasn't right… :D

My one problem with the Exile spells, compared to Avernum, is Fireball. Its counterpart, Ice Lances, is way better (it has multiple targets, which is why they're both good, but Ice Lances is also useful when you're fighting an army of fire lizards; also, you can pick the targets to avoid hitting your party members).

So there's that witch who hangs out in the Great Cave and wants you to bring her five pieces of mold… are they all in that general area? I could only find two (one by the water and one right next to her). How far away do you have to look? (And this mold wouldn't be greymold, by any chance, would it? If it is, then that's good, because then she might make the salve for me and I can heal Patrick's wife and make him stop being so depressing! =D)
