Actually, now I'm confused. The persecution described by Stillness was visited upon the followers of Joe Smith when he was trying to set up shop. "Under the Banner of Heaven" does a fair job of describing the issues. Did the same happen to other religious sects? Is Stillness actually a member of the JW sect, or the Morman sect? I think the only reason that they are called Christians is for lack of a better term. Perhaps we should just return to the issue of Social Degradation, and having abandoned the hypothesis of "religious decay causes social decay," first explore social decay as a reality of false impression, and then move to religious decay as a reality or false impression. Yeah? -------------------- WWtNSD? Synergy - "I don't get it." Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |

Sigh. Humans assigned that name. It is unlikely that humans would have assigned a name that meant "destroyer of worlds," now isn't it? -------------------- WWtNSD? Synergy - "I don't get it." Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |

Perhaps the everything only makes sense to Stillness if it is explained in the manner he suggests? With 99% of everything being perception, it would seem to make sense that his belief and experience and values be based on something that is nonsensical to the rest of us. -------------------- WWtNSD? quote:So. Everything comes from nothingness and is created by a deity. This deity is absolute morality (de facto) and (because you say so) limits the creation to that of which it knows/imagines. I won't go into how fantastical it sounds to invent all this crap all at once. But then we also have immorality, which must have also come from the deity. But we already decided that all which comes from the deity must be of absolute morality. Ergo, what you call immorality must be morality, because the only other explanation is a deity that has no clue. Of course it could just be a gigantic sense of humor, but sooooo many other people have postulated that already, and my sense is that you take this crap a little seriously. -------------------- WWtNSD? I would imagine that in a land of theocracy, views may be a little different. After all we have the freedom to choose, without worry that a special agency would beat the living snot out of us for failure to believe/act convincingly. Oh. If belief in a HP is founded on the notion that something must be better (later on, likely after death,) doesn't that pre-suppose that things aren't as one imagined currently? If a person is healthy and satisfied it seems they would be less likely to grasp at the straws of future rewards than if they were living closer to the edge. -------------------- WWtNSD? The RIAA, like all enforcement agencies, is despisable because they are destroyers, not creators. If a person could directly support an artist without enriching 15 middlemen in the process it would be a step in the right direction. [insert obligatory link to that type of thing here] Re: inalienable right to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness. I believe that the rights in question are those of personal acquisition, not right to receive. I have no right to be given food, but my right to seek food is not infringed. Similarly, we don't have a right to be happy, merely a right to act in a manner which will create happiness. -------------------- WWtNSD? Synergy - "I don't get it." The Declaration of Independence was a nicely worded "Dear John" letter to the King (and people) of England. It doesn't have much weight other than that, and was supplanted by the Bill of Rights and US Constitution as far as actually defining rights of citizens within this country. Drew, is that more or less correct? It's pretty much all I remember from my days on Bunker Hill. -------------------- WWtNSD? Synergy - "I don't get it." George Bush did not attend public school. I'm afraid that my experience has been that home schooled kids are just as screwed up as public or privately schooled kids. It's almost like they are unique individuals and will all come out different no matter how hard you try to homogenize them. -------------------- WWtNSD? Synergy - "I don't get it." Um ADoS? You are over-reacting a bit here. Questioning the morality of illegally downloaded software is not explicitly forbidden. Discussion of methods is forbidden. And besides, you should encourage the building inspector to have a snack so that they are distracted from any code violations. My inspector loves talking trains, so that takes the place of food for me. We just walk around looking at studs and sheets of plywood talking about 2-2-6 until he runs out of breath and signs off. It works. Feed your inspector! My electric inspector loves tuna, especially the stuff I catch and can myself. I've yet to fail inspection... Edit- I suppose that you could say this falls under the "illegal activities" clause, but that is a stretch. Again, this isn't methods by morals. And discussion of morals have been allowed before. This might have well been a poll. Lawful vs chaotic. The problem is in pre-testing software (and other digital media.) There is no excuse for pirating Jeff's stuff because you get to test it out first. If you like it, you buy it. Other things, like music, can be tested via the radio and then purchased. No real excuse for pirating music except general laziness. Which isn't much of an excuse, but then again the person is lazy. Expensive software, without trial versions, is just begging to be cracked and copied. I've done it, and either am disappointed or end up purchasing it. In some cases the preview is a time period and I never even see the software, which means the company loses my business until I see the product, usually by "borrowing" a copy. In short, it's a tough line to draw, especially for a company. They need to both widen the audience and make money. Jeff has a great system, others, not so much. -------------------- WWtNSD? School violence has always been a problem. Like Kel pointed out, shootings have been happening for 40 years. It is only because of the information dissemination that we hear about them now. It is only now that we can worry that something similar will happen locally. It doesn't mean there is an increased chance of it happening, it just means we worry. It is the same with the pole dancing at a local party. If your children see that, and feel uncomfortable, I'm sure they are smart enough to figure out an excuse to get the heck out of there. Children don't need to be sheltered. Part of the maturing process is to see the world through their own two eyes and figure it out for themselves. It is inevitable, and if you try to stop it you will fail. Better to work within the system than against it. But seriously, at least you don't have kids drinking and driving like around this area. Typically we get one or two dead right after graduation and then it stops until the next year. It's almost like a thinning of the herd. -------------------- WWtNSD? Synergy - "I don't get it." Lack of patience with the process of finding a mate is another part of the problem. It took me more than a handful of years to find the right person, and I'm sure I would have regretted pulling the trigger any earlier. -------------------- WWtNSD? Synergy - "I don't get it." Not gonna spend the money on it. They wanted $25 for it, which seems exorbitant for the brief enjoyment. Instead I found some good Discworld used and some James and Christie to satisfy my need for murder. -------------------- WWtNSD? Synergy - "I don't get it."
