If I remember correctly, Lakir@ is from that area of the world. It stands to reason that she(?) would have a better understanding than most Americans.

The very fact that that CBS article described the scene in Kosovo as a bunch of folks shooting their guns into the air in celebration of independence does lend some credence to that characterization.

Are you addicted to CBS? There are hundreds of news sources out there on the intarwits, and you come back to the same one every time. As far as the story, this is yet another example of people not being able to negotiate to a resolution. Instead they have drawn a line in the sand, knowing that other folks will have to die because of it. Pitiful.

Aww, leave it open for a little while. Dikiyoba actually likes to hear praise. This seems like the place for it.

Honestly? I think you need to include a message with that error code that requests people only post the necessary parts. I am aware that you are curiously reticent about having your real name occasionally posted on the interwebs, but I'm sure if you were to create a fairly worded poll that you would find me in the minority. And certainly in this case there should be no doubt. The referring website makes no mention of your desire for privacy, in fact it appears just the opposite is true, but it is a shame that Iffy posted that link here instead of just emailing you. Maybe that could also be part of the error message. I realize you have a lot of real life stuff going on now, but I actually feel badly for Iffy in this one instance.
He was trying to be helpful and you nailed him. He likely had no clue at all that he was posting your real name. So, um, get over it. Maybe apologize to Iffy.

Huh. I read that a little differently then. It looks like the Federal govt has no rights to limit firearm possession, but that it might be allowed for individual states to enact restrictions.

Missed your edit, Thuryl, so had no comment on it. Alo was speaking of the Constitution here:
quote:
I am seriously suggesting that we repeal the Second Amendment, or at least look seriously at what it means.
And I was responding that it is perfectly reasonable to own one or more guns. To restrict ownership is wrong. Should I have more of a right to hunt than someone that lives in a city? While I get frustrated with the city folk littering on my property, and ignoring signs, that has little to do with gun ownership.

Alo - I don't know where you got your info about crime correlating with gun ownership. You might do better correlating crime with exposure to crime (real or media portrayed.) I could believe that. Quite a bit of news these days seems to be hyping the hysteria of violence. That, combined with the graphic violence ever-present in leisure media, may inure people to violence and crime.

As far as the contention that guns aren't a deterrent, I cry bull. The fact of the matter is that 95% of the homes in rural Oregon will have one or more guns. Criminals are less likely to break into an occupied home if they know they are likely to face armed defense. I present a harder target than something else, so they go somewhere else. That is how deterrence works. During the times my home is unoccupied, my weapons are stored off-site so as to prevent them from falling into the hands of criminals. I don't know what folks in the city or suburbs do to safeguard their weapons. It seems though that when Costco carries a gunsafe in their stores, it must be one of the options that is regularly exercised.
It's always sad when someone snaps and goes on a shooting rampage. It's equally as sad when they do anything that is lethal. The commonality is that people snap and that people die, not that guns are the bad thing. It's a point of view thing really. I'm not sure what the answer would be to keeping guns out of the hands of non-criminals who have no history of violence and somehow snap and decide suddenly that killing is a viable solution. I really don't. But like I said earlier, it would have been just as harmful to torch 5 gallons of unleaded. But then they could just ban 5 gallon gas cans, right?

I know they call it "firefighting", but a gun won't help you do it.

Much like any shocked body will react when presented with a choice. People make amazingly stupid decisions when under stress. It is well known and well abused at all levels of society. It is telling that someone would create that situation for the Congress. He's doing it again too, with his pressure on the Congress to re-pass the domestic spying package. He says do it, or else our spy agencies won't be able to stop another terrorist attack, and the terrorists know it!

So no, he's 11 months from the end of his terms in office, and over 6 years from the first attack. And he STILL hasn't put in place any permanent features which either protect the american people or alleviate the terrorists desire to attack us in the first place.

Bush has been, even in the minds of many conservatives, one of the most destructive and divisive presidents ever. He should have stayed in that 1st grade classroom for the rest of his presidency.

I fully realize you have some curious ideas about meat, which I will pardon on account of your outstanding service to the fluffy turtles. But I will alway prefer wild game over feed lot slaughterhouse meat, with grass raised beef a fairly close second. I guess what I'm saying is that no one should think that meat comes wrapped in cellophane and sits in a handy styrofoam tray with a clever flat tampon underneath to hide any unsightly bodily fluids.
As far as that bandit thing, I live an hour from police protection. I could expect a response time of 30 minutes if there was a fire. I make my own contingency plans to deal with things that would otherwise be considered 911 situations. It is part of the tradeoff for living in a rural area. If you suggest that it is okay for me to own guns, but not someone who lives in a suburb, then you are creating classes of people. Some citizens will have some rights, and some have others. Unfortunately we created this principled land under the assumption that we were all created with the same rights. A step toward partitioned rights is a step toward slavery and eventual total erosion of property rights. Sort of what the last eight years did to privacy laws.

More news.
quote:
The shooting was the fourth at a U.S. school within a week.

On Feb. 8, a woman shot two fellow students to death before committing suicide at Louisiana Technical College in Baton Rouge. In Memphis, Tenn., a 17-year-old is accused of shooting and critically wounding a fellow student Monday during a high school gym class, and the 15-year-old victim of a shooting at an Oxnard, Calif., junior high school has been declared brain dead.

For me, what it boils down to is that a person who is committed to making an act of violence will do so . The level of violence may differ according to means, but not necessarily. The guy in this instance could just as easily brought a 5 gallon can of gasoline and poured it down the auditorium floor, and then lit a match. I'm sure the overall impact would have been greater in that situation.

[Insert standard speech about not mentally abusing someone beyond normal standards, and making sure that they are capable of mentally receiving such abuse without going all nuts on you.]

As far as locked doors go, I don't. But then again my dog would eat you if you broke in and threatened me. If you weigh over 100# then she would make two meals of you, no more.

I'm sure most of you are aware that some folks were murdered today at a school in Illinois. I don't know the details, but I believe that at least 10 died. It's as good an excuse as any for a poll.

Edit - This is from a NPR news report. Reuters is saying 18 injured. Who the hell knows. Apparently the police report that the gunman is dead.
