Oh, whoops. My apologies.

Doesn't invalidate my point, of course. As I said earlier, I'm sure it works differently in different professions, and I still don't have any idea what sort of stuff you do.

Alec: I agree. You've lost your sceptic's license.

Ben: You are stupidly paranoid. Anything can happen anyway. A random driver on the road could decide to veer off the road and onto the sidewalk and ram you. Someone could take a backpack of explosives into a train and self-detonate. If someone wants to do something crazy and destructive, generally speaking there's nothing you or I or anyone can do about it until it's too late. Personally, I'd be amazed if anyone ever tried the plane thing again. September 11 got too much press. They'd be better off doing something no one would expect.

Room 3 is inactive. Completely.

Unless you are one of the special people who knows the password.

Edit: Nice to see Zeviz back, by the way. I wonder how he's coping with all the new monikers.

That suggests that either you don't know the right people, or that you're not the sort of person that people like to employ. ;)

Seriously, as VCH points out, this doesn't apply to every field. If you want to be a neurosurgeon, yeah, you need to study. What job are you looking for? Going by your subjects, I don't have a clue. Latin, Greek, English, Rhetoric, Physics. Linguist is the best I can come up with.

Aside from that, well, as I said, I have never even had to look for work. If I quit my job tomorrow, I have an open offer to take up an accounting job at a supermarket (despite having no training or natural affinity for the position whatsoever). If I talk to a few people, there's a decent chance I could get a job in a game studio. Failing that, I could almost certainly get a job as a painter. And this is all because of contacts I've made here in Canberra - where I've been living for all of 4 and a half months (option 1). My experience in radio together with a couple of references probably could get me another radio job elsewhere (option 2).

Why does it work for me and not you? I dunno. Maybe it's personality, maybe it's the difference between Australia and America, maybe it's being part of the Christian community, maybe it's something completely different.

(I suppose I could ask how many jobs you've gotten through your education, but that wouldn't be very fair)

If I was going to offer serious advice, I'd suggest finding out about ten people who work in the field you'd like to, and find out how they got there. You'll probably see a pattern emerge. But you probably don't need or want my advice.

Throwing insults is immature and barbaric. Beat them up instead.

Seriously, I found the words "You wish." very servicable for dealing with the various accusations of sexual deviance that get thrown around in the schoolyard so much.

As for the value of college's name, I haven't seen that. So far all of my jobs after the very first one have been recieved from people who either knew me from a previus job or from their friends who tought a class where I did very well.

Exactly. The main benefits of tertiary education appear (to me) to be tangential ones. Learning self-motivation, basic living and organisational skills, meeting other people interested in the same field and getting known, etc. These things (I think) can be achieved more efficiently other ways.

Kel: I'm curious. These friends, did they just present their resume, get an interview, mention being a student at Cal and get hired? Or did they get these jobs through someone they met through attending Cal?

(Of course, I'm not arguing that option 3 never works. Just that options 1 and 2 work a lot better.)

Essentially it's a long and elaborate testing procedure. The trouble with on-the-job training is that this is usually done at least partially at the employer's expense, so they don't really want people who aren't likely to benefit from it.
More than that, it's not even the preferred testing procedure.

Say you're an employer, and you want to take someone on. Your options:

1) Someone you already know, and you know to be a hard worker, honest person, and eager to learn.

2) Someone with previous experience and good references.

3) Someone who's studied and has some sort of degree, but no experience.

With option 3, you don't know if they will be an easy person to work with, whether they'll adjust to real life work well, how dedicated they'll be, etc. From where I'm standing, the other two options are much more attractive to a prospective employer.

I got my job through a combination of 1 and 2. I've never had to apply for a job in my life.

Depends on who it is. If I met you, who I don't really know very well, it probably would happen much as you describe. If I met Thuryl, we'd probably start talking about the nature of reality or something crazy like that. If I met TM, chances are we'd end up getting into a full-on fist fight. :)

Basically, the point is so you get a better understanding of who that person is. Words on the internet can only tell you so much. The tone of your voice, the way you walk, what your immediate reaction to something is as opposed to your considered reaction, etc, are all facets of a person that we aren't really privy to from the boards.

I wish it wasn't. I would really like to see some measure of fairness applied. There is no good reason for some senior members to get away with what they do without so much as a tut-tut and fatman to be threatened with banning for calling someone a half-wit.

Seriously, how can any admin or mod expect a new member to follow the rules when many of the most prominent posters don't?

And I'm hoping the physics improves. I've just had three pretty bad teachers in a row. Well, two sorta bad ones and one horrible one.

Well, depends what you're looking for. If you're just wanting to learn stuff or have fun, sure, you'll get a certain amount of value out of it. As far as improving your employment opportunities goes, I stand by my original statement. Experience is much more useful than education in most non-academic fields.

Heck, even my uncle who has a Ph.D in Biology spends a big chunk of his time working on stuff completely unrelated to his field of study.

This topic confirms my opinion that higher education is largely a waste of time and money unless you're looking at getting a Master's or something.

Experience beats education by a long way. :)

No I don't. I just have plans to travel around a fair bit. I'd be about 650 kilometres from Thuryl or Measle, and maybe 800 from Milla.

In Australia, everything is a long way away. It's nearly as big as the US, but with a tiny fraction of the people.

What, half-wit? That's taboo? TM regularly gets away with motherf***er.

I think he's pretty much right, besides. This is a thread where people explain why they prefer BoE. OF COURSE there are plenty who don't. We all realize this. They just aren't a subject of this discussion, and I see no need to refer to them. If he was generalizing by not allowing for people like Kel, so was Brett when he wrote the topic title.

Okay, fatman WAS a bit rude, but still.

Exactly. Thus the reason I quoted your post - I was continuing in the same vein. It's just that a few others in this topic seem to be taking the self-aggrandizing a bit more seriously.
