With respect to Elijah, the theory that I've seen is that he didn't go to heaven, merely a whirlwind that captured him and bodily removed him to a new location on earth, as evidenced by his writings that occurred after the ascension.

With respect to everybody dies, I'm holding out for the resurrection. If it occurs your statement becomes wrong.

"Don't argue about tastes." (Russian saying.)

Is there an equivalent saying in English? (The idea is that different people like different things so arguments like "is green a better color than blue" or "is modern rock better than 60s rock" are destined to go nowhere.)
I agree. My comment wasn't on taste but rather was on the "quality of music having dropped off significantly since 1975" (paraphrased, but right in tone), which I disputed.

I cited both major new artists and significant new work by established artists as evidence that quality music continues to be made and can easily be found.

To which the reply is "its stale because its unoriginal". Well, other than Dylan electrifying folk all music is derivative. Modern country, soul, R&B continue to be tuneful and musical (among others) and continue to mine old material in new ways to remain fresh.

quote:
I've listened to quite a bit of everything, and, I'll wager, quite a bit more than you have.

Not supported with any evidence, and what is there actually seems to imply the opposite. The fact that nothing new is found to be appealing suggests that you no longer "listen around". Not that this is a problem (hey mine the same old stuff and continue to enjoy it) except where you comment on modern music without exposure.

Agreed. That was the point of my comment, and the sarcastic tone becomes noticable when I audible it. Although I enjoyed the world cup, b-ball is more meaningful to me.

What can I say? At least in my mind, my tastes are impeccable, and no other viewpoint is legitimate.
And that was the point of my postings. Your mind is too narrow, biased and influenced by personal tastes to evaluate modern music and call it all formulaic corporate crap. Music that I listed included genres that I do not follow/appreciate but are innovative in their own right. Bands that had their start in the sixties and early 70's continued to produce quality work post '75 as attested by the works mentioned earlier by Led Zep and Lou Reed.

You may be qualified to comment on prog rock but you are obviously not able to comment on anything else. And if you listen to soul/R&B and have never heard of Remy Shand then you do not listen to good soul.

Or an athiest who craves something more from his life.

Believe it or not, most atheists don't want anything more from their lives spiritually. Their lives are completely fulfilling. Isn't that a scary thought?

Sigh.

I was merely trolling for reaction. Thanks TM for getting it right.

The graemlin at the end was to signify mild humor at the expense of athiests. While some athiests may question spiritual matters on occasion I wouldn't presume it to be most/many/the rule. I also wouldn't use it as evidence the athiest is losing his/her athiesm. Similarly, if a religious person questions their God on occasion it doesn't necessarily provide evidence that their God doesn't exist.

I am sure many people live their lives in bliss without having a God need. Deists might say they have substituted other things for the hole that God would fill but that would be a discussion I am not willing to provoke.

Yes basketball. Thuggery incorporated. Where not only do the players fight with each other they climb into the stands to attack the paying customers, those who provide them with their paychecks.

Where gangsta is alive and well as the players surround themselves with their posse, and freely associate with the criminal element. Perhaps that is why basketball is marginalized in the rest of the world. Thank-you America for another corporate product devoid of artistry and elegance.

Partial list of music produced post 75 that is important or relevant - Bruce Springsteen (virtually entire catelogue is post '75) Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler as a solo artist (entirely post '75) Led Zeppelin - In Through the Out Door (1978) Robert Plant - Now and Zen (1988) Lou Reed - Street Hassle (1978) The Clash - London Calling (1980) U2's career, Dead Kennedys - entire career especially Frankenchrist (1985), Prince, Slayer, Beastie Boys.

Innovative music included the punk movement, new wave, speed metal, the marriage of country and pop, rap, Seattle grunge scene, inclusion of world music.

And I won't go into independents but local scenes are alive and triving with independent music companies, private recording studios, internet expansion of the market.

Go beyond American Idol. The expansion and diversification of the music scene has been incredible during the last 30 years. If you cannot find anything but corporate rock you are not listening to the right stuff.

Visually, stunning things could be done. Especially the creatures as we haven't seen their ilk in movies before. And at least in the first movie that could compensate enough for a thin plot - ie worth seeing once. I'd want more though (Superman was visually stunning with a bland story that left me cold and bored)

Well, of course you have the Bruce Lee movies. Then there are the Lee knock-offs (find an actor that looks like him--> you fill in the blanks). Especially the second set are great. I think Fists of Fury is wonderful.

For "good" music I would argue that the artists I mention are craftsman in their chosen field, either lyrically, emotively or through instrumental arrangement. I am not a particular fan of country music but I am damn sure that you would be able to find stars in that category that shine/make quality music. My point was there are talented people out there who show mastery over their craft and some have even found mainstream popularity - even if it wasn't with you.

Remy Shand does not belong with N. Young, U2 or Green Day in that he is neither politically active nore is his music similar (he is R&B/Soul) but he does belong in that he shows a mastery within his element. If you do not know who he is, he is an emerging artist (one album to date, in 2002 - nominated for four Grammy's) and well worth exploring if you like that genre.

If I had to make a movie set in Avernum, it probably wouldn't follow any of the game plots. It'd probably be set during the Empire-Avernum war.

Not that there is anything wrong with the above. Look at Star Wars. There are many books serializing the adventures of that world that have little/nothing to do with what happened in the movies. Star Trek is another example where characters from the TV show show up in books/movies but the plots are independent stories.

I'm starting to think that Zidane did it because he wanted to be changed before and the coach refuses. But I'm not sure - maybe it was just and explosion of madness.

Zidane has lost it on the pich before. In fact, the term "monster" is one he has used to describe himself to his family. I think it comes in part from the passion he approaches the game with. I certainly will remember him for his greatness - like this tourney where he willed France to the finals. He has been sensational and inspirational for too long to be permanently tarnished by this.

I listen to good music and white people haven't made any good music since the early 80s.

Sounds a little racist. If not racist then definately sheltered.

Good whiteboy music includes Remy Shand, Neil Young, Green Day, Neil Young, U2...short list and mostly rock but you can find it in any genre.
