by me:

quote:
Ie. it is common sense not to stand in water when working with electricity - but only if you have learned that water is a good conductor of electricity.
by Minor:

quote:
Water is actually a pretty lousy conductor, so common sense is still wrong. We just live in a world full of water that is full of non-water solutes.

When not being specific enough (and proper grammar, spelling is part of what is needed) communication doesn't occur. I should have specified water relative to air. But I still would be wrong (and so would Minor) because it is not actually the water that conducts electricity, it is the dissolved salts and minerals in the water that act as the conductor.

So, I am wrong, and Minor's correction of me is also wrong. If I had been clear in my original message Minor would not have needed to (incorrectly) try to correct me.

edit:

perhaps a better statement would have left out the word good, as in "water is a conductor of electricity..." which would have conveyed the message (although still being technically incorrect it would have sufficed for the point)

Wikipedia gives some relative conductivities for those interested Conductivity

Lowbacca:
quote:
Um.., yeah. The 11 errors in my grammer and spelling matters not.
They matter because they show a sloppy and disorganized mind and thereby weaken the credibility of any of your statements. It becomes irritating and detracts from reading for content. It also makes comprehension more difficult (I see "ill" and understand sickness rather than I'll, thus I have to re-read the sentence to make sure I really understand your point).

The occasional spelling/grammar error is fine but your messages are littered - you make little/no effort to abide by convention. This causes me to question your research/ability to speak with authority on a topic.

quote:
I just use my common sense on everything, which only goes so far without knowing anything.
Interesting to note that common sense isn't common, it is a learned understanding - so you must know something. Ie. it is common sense not to stand in water when working with electricity - but only if you have learned that water is a good conductor of electricity. Using common sense in here is liable to get you in serious trouble as there seem to be experts on just about any subject, or at least individuals who will put work into learning relevant material from good authorities.

That being said, it is also a good place to be if you are willing to be challenged in your thinking and make adjustments as appropriate when proper data is supplied (thanks Kel for lessons on Greek).

Frederik Pohl. The other side of time and Seige of eternity. Interesting. I thought more could be done with the multiple versions of each character.

I count at least 11 errors in spelling or grammar. No wonder there will be no debate, it wouldn't be intelligent anyway. And, in the end you would still be wrong.

Weighing in on the fish vs whale argument, some definitions of the Greek ketos are
quote:
The Greek word (for which the Authorized Version translates as "whale" in Matt 12:40) is ketos , which the standard BAGD lexicon defines as "sea-monster", of which Mounce's lexicon defines as "sea-monster, great fish, or whale", and of which the Louw and Nida UBS lexicon defines as "big fish, huge fish."
from Tektonics.org

I am reading a definition that could fit either, or both, of the above claims (fish OR whale).

Perhaps the problem is applying modern biology to historic texts and expecting it to work. (for a better discussion on this point read the full article from the above URL).

I don't think it is pertinent to the point of the text nor does "whale or fish" do anything to advance/deny claims of (in)fallibility of the bible. SO, why are we arguing this point?

Just returned from Royal Tyrell. Fascinating stuff really. And Biblical descriptions aren't necessarily scientific proof of anything.

Instead of celebrating excessive post counts we should first validate the quality and then celebrate. At that rate my count would still be working its way inexorably to 1.

My reviw (of the ending): Awful, worse than dieing and need I remind you how I feel about dieing

Um, I really didn't like dying. If getting resurrected means dying again I am most certainly not up for that unpleasant experience
On the whole, had to beat myself with a stick to get rid of the painful images. As a result, I am up for dieing again.

That said, my BMI borders on unhealthy, depending on which test thingy I look at... 160 lbs (72.5 kg) and 6'3" (1.91 m).

Look at more than the BMI - your scores are close to mine yet I can run 5K in 20 minutes, participate in triathalons (minis up to 1.5K swim, 40K cycle,10K run), ran a half marathon, cycle for 2+ hrs....

Not that I'm tooting my own horn, it's just that there are other things to look at. Cardio, strength (here I score badly), core body strength (better - fits my needs in rock climbing), BMI index, as was pointed out by Other_Guy how said mass is (disproportionally) dispersed over one's frame.

BMI alone is a poor indicator of health - it is a rough tool only.

What I don't think that everyone here gets is that way before the kidnappings every happened, Israel had been attacking peaceful non-terrostist civilians for no reason at all for many years.

Are you serious? Do you know how Isreal came into being, the fact that when Isreal was being set up it was a compromise solution that the Jewish people agreed to (they compromised) but the Palestinians refused to compromise and continue to do so. That they have had to fight several wars and an unending terrorst battle to preserve their tiny spit of land? That Arab nations today continue to deny Isreal's right to exist as a sovereign nation?

quote:
And if you were to ask people in the Middle East what they think of Israel, they wouldn't be too positive.
They have never viewed Isreal positively. This is not a recent development. It is a mindset that began before any Isreali actions of self-defense.

That begets the question, if we had all stopped at the last post on p.2 would Alo post to fulfill the prophecy, becoming a spammer extraordinaire or would he have suffered the ignomy of overestimating our ability to create spam?

Which would be the lesser of two evils?

Edit: I now know how to become an (inadvertent) dbl poster. As I was sending my post I noticed a spelling error. I hit the stop button, fixed the spelling error and resent. Unfortunately, the first message had already posted.

I am saddened that so many are suffering and dying in the Middle East. Isreals' actions are in my view punitive and go beyond a measured response. That being said, Lebanon is not an innocent party in this (undeclared) war, as Hezbollah operate with impunity in the south, along Isreals' border and the cabinet of government even includes two members of Hezbollah.

Isreal does need to protect it's citizens in some manner and, if Lebanon, will not act to provide a secure border (refusing to disarm Hezbollah, allowing Beirut to operate as the main base for Hezbollah) then unilateral action may be whats required.

The resurrection. Oops, mispoke. Meant to say the end of days when J comes and Christians ascend to heaven w/o suffering death. You know, as the song states "...two men standing on a hil, one left standing still, I wish we'd all been ready..."

Not meant to mock Christianity, meant as a poke on ultimate statements.
