Stuff to keep in bulk: Fine leather Fine steel Gold bars Focus crystals Mandrake Graymold Emeralds Wine Bags of meal Chitrach claws Icy geodes Swamp nodules Molten lava lumps I would also horde potions - you really can get by without them for much of the game, but Energy potions become much more useful later on. -------------------- Behind, the sea of time and space roars and follows swiftly Posts: 280 | Registered: Wednesday, October 3 2001 07:00 |

Thuryl - that's sort of what must have happened. One character is the pre-configured mage, the other is a priest whom I gave one level of mage spells to during character creation. The priest - though she already had one level - was able to buy two more. The mage was only allowed to buy one more. So does anyone know where any places are to learn more Firebolt (ie tomes?) -------------------- Behind, the sea of time and space roars and follows swiftly Posts: 280 | Registered: Wednesday, October 3 2001 07:00 |

No - no one was unconscious, ever. I can't buy any more Firebolt. Which is odd, because I thought you were allowed to buy +2 levels of every spell, even if you had already found a couple of levels. And presumably my Mage started off with one level, so I'm not quite sure what's happened. If anyone knows where the Firebolt spellbooks are located, it would be very useful. -------------------- Behind, the sea of time and space roars and follows swiftly Posts: 280 | Registered: Wednesday, October 3 2001 07:00 |

Moral dilemmas in Avernum 4 | |

It seems that Avernum 4 presents more moral dilemmas than ever before, in terms of (friendly-ish) people and things that you have to kill to finish quests: 1. Crain Poor guy, but how else to finish the quest without killing him off? An option to lie to Thorious and pick up the reward would be nice. 2. Non-hostile Araneas How else to get that Nullity shield and a Terror upgrade without full-on murder? Poor little spiders. They may not have been GIFTS, but they were very quiet and peaceful. 3. Cerebrous worm It wasn't his fault he was weird. Or that he was an experiment gone wrong. Such a lovely, gentle creature: but he still had to be slaughtered to clear a quest. 4. Gremlin The last of his clan. Killing him felt almost like genocide. 5. Dharmon mine mage No way to sneak past him without making him mad, but the stuff down his mine is just too juicy to ignore - if only you didn't have to kill him when you claim-jump him. -------------------- Behind, the sea of time and space roars and follows swiftly Posts: 280 | Registered: Wednesday, October 3 2001 07:00 |

There's another Nullity Shield on an Aranea in caves south of Camp Samuels. The problem is they're friendly, so you have to murder them to get it. But when you murder them, you can also get past the one blocking the passage, to learn more Terror. I can't see another way to do this. -------------------- Behind, the sea of time and space roars and follows swiftly Posts: 280 | Registered: Wednesday, October 3 2001 07:00 |

He's not easy, it just took me about ten trys on a regular four-party playthrough. I finally won when for some reason he went into the altar room at the side (I had opened the door) and got blocked in there by some shades I summoned, leaving me clearer to fight the demon. You have to be careful with summoning though, because he fires out a lot of charm spells. For this reason, keep your priest well back, because if she/he gets charmed, it's all over. It's not a bad idea to send out one character exploring and pick up the *item* on his body/coffin in the corner - it's useful during the fight to stay alive. -------------------- Behind, the sea of time and space roars and follows swiftly Posts: 280 | Registered: Wednesday, October 3 2001 07:00 |

I am finding this ludicrously hard - impossible, in fact, with the pre-fab party. I can stay alive through the first battle (four wolves/two worgs) but not through the second (bears/worgs). How did others get through? I used up my health potions in the first one, now even using speed and strengh in the second I cannot keep my party alive. -------------------- Behind, the sea of time and space roars and follows swiftly Posts: 280 | Registered: Wednesday, October 3 2001 07:00 |

Can someone please advise on a strategy to win the battle that teleports you in? This is clearly a very unbalanced battle for a beginner-level party. Even cheating in Invulnerability potions does not help. It is boringly, stupidly difficult. Apologies if I am missing something, but if not, I will not be able to award this scenario a decent mark as I effectively cannot get past this battle. -------------------- Behind, the sea of time and space roars and follows swiftly Posts: 280 | Registered: Wednesday, October 3 2001 07:00 |

Testing a singleton does NOT equate to a valid test of a normal four-strong party experience. It is *harder* when you have you have four characters - two weak spellcasters that you are constantly trying to protect, that keep getting in the way. One character would be relatively easy - s/he gets all the potions, all the armour, (much more experience?) and all you would need for this scenario is a couple of levels of Priest spells for Repel Spirit. When you have actually tried playing this scenario with a conventional four-member party, then see how you feel about it being recommended "Beginner". -------------------- Behind, the sea of time and space roars and follows swiftly Posts: 280 | Registered: Wednesday, October 3 2001 07:00 |

I thought this scenario was an excellent first attempt. I got the "Guards not loading" errors, but it didn't seem to affect anything. But just one thing: I do not think this is fairly classed as a Beginning game. I am quite an experienced player, and I had to use every (legal*) cheat going, and finally resort to the Character Editor. There was just no way for my party to restore any spell points much of the time, the only potions I ever found were a couple of Energy Potions (not even elixirs) in the final Castle. The other issue was the Str=6 doors in the Castle. None of my party had Str at 6, and my last lockpicks had broken (on one of the myriad Str=9999 doors). You don't get a warning that you're going to be trapped in the Castle, there are no more lockpicks around (that I could find) and there's no way to increase stats with no monsters left in the Hallway. So I was essentially trapped. I had to edit in more lockpicks. *By legal cheat - I mean after every battle I would take them back out into the open, put Enduring Barrier on them, rest my Priest back up to full spell points, and go back in again. Not really a particularly fun gaming tactic. -------------------- Behind, the sea of time and space roars and follows swiftly Posts: 280 | Registered: Wednesday, October 3 2001 07:00 |

Does anyone know where the third patch of Ember Flowers is? Exactly. Players like me want to play the game, and custom scenarios, but don't have the ability (or time, or desire, or whatever that reason might be) to create scenarios. So it saves our DL time and Spiderweb's bandwidth if the two apps come separately ;) -------------------- Behind, the sea of time and space roars and follows swiftly Posts: 280 | Registered: Wednesday, October 3 2001 07:00 |

My emails to you are all bouncing back, delayed. It may well be the fault of my ISP.
