quote:
And Job ended up getting everything back once he understood the lesson.
If you are arguing that one set of wife-and-children is ethically equal to another, then you are engaging in moral calculus- a philosophy that is not only highly materialistic, but is also overtly evil.

quote:
In that instance, God was able to influence events such that Joseph's brothers didn't accomplish their aim, but God could not stop them from taking actions with that aim in mind.
In this instance, that's not applicable. Are you saying that god purposefully chose Joseph for Israel to love far more than his other sons? In which case god is STILL having someone act considerably worse to get the job done.

quote:
The implication, then, is that there is some core of free will that God cannot touch, and God must resort to other methods (like trickery, in the Joseph case) to get humans to accomplish God's aims.
"Trickery" still doesn't explain the behaviors of the brothers. God clearly had assigned them this behavior, and they do it. Regardless of the methods, whether they be subterfuge, psychology, etc., if god assigns you something to do and you do it without knowing but with certain accuracy, you have no free will. To argue otherwise is to have a narrow-minded vision of what "free will" actually means.

quote:
The story of Job was written with a message like "Have faith in God during the hard times, your reward will be greater for it."
Why do there have to be hard times? If there is no free will (and I can begin to whittle away arguments that there is progressively, but you in particular don't seem to be going at me on this count), then why did god CREATE a world in which there ARE hard times? If god is an omnipotent creator, why make a world that sucks so bad?

Well, you should propose this alliance IC.

Anyway:

"They're good however I can tell from many how amny factions are so far from the action that they aren't THE main enemy."
I do not even know what this sentence is saying.

"Besides you said that it was ONE of the main conspirators in the revolution."
Satsujin was. I intentionally left the extent of his involvement vague, however.

Actually, this brings up a fairly interesting biblical proof that outright defeats the notion of free will:
"But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive."
Genesis 50:20

Joseph is saying that god had his brothers send him into Egypt so that the Israelites might have food when Joseph ultimately gains the power to distribute it as such. Which is odd, because in previous examples where the Israelites need to be spared of some horrible famine/massacre, it's usually the direct hand of god or at least a prophetic manifestation that saves the tribe. Or at the bare minimum (if we're to use the example of the Judges, which has its own set of circumstances that SHOULD make it inaplicable), god will make people to good things, but never bad things.

This verse most clearly implies the "hand of god" overriding the brothers' consciences by stating that their having Joseph go to Israel was pre-planned: That is, there was no free will on the part of the brothers.

The Rakshasi have no abnormal weaknesses. (Actually, this was also an issue of contention in the old Arena, and it was ultimately determined that they aren't demons.) You have to gun them down and make sure that they don't catch on fire.

Now Dintiradin's suggestion of using antimagic fields is a good one. But Dintiradin doesn't have the capacity to kill off the Rakshasi in melee. It would be a good idea, for instance, to make an alliance with a faction who has a decent melee force.

That's teamwork.

(And in case you want the words straight from my lips [or fingers], Zeviz is right: RMs are an Arena tradition, and I'm running this one pretty much by the books. I'll try to get no one faction involved above their heads, but if you try to take the Rakshasi on by yourself, it won't go so well.)

On the other hand, the Rakshasic warriors are armed. Plus, even if they do get struck something awful by an arrow, a fireball will do more than cauterize the wound. So the key to any fight will be finding a way to take out the magi.

Well, you might know about Rakshasi in your libraries... But your expeditionary force would not know of them, nevermind how to beat them. And yeah, the boulders might be effective, but the fireballs would cancel out the boulders' effect.

Anyway, I was under the assumption that your battlemagi were not THAT well trained. Plus, their tendency to hurl fireballs would make them highly vulnerable to being massacred. If you want to claim that they were simply not in town at the time and fled when they saw it burning, that's cool too.

And it'd be entirely possible for you to make alliances and adjust your strategy-- encouraged, in fact. But your men's first encounter with a magic-absorbing foe is damned to be disastrous.

A year? Hardly. More like, say, a month. If that.

Anyway, as for the destruction of Angel's Rest: I'm assuming that the city was never all that well armed, and the primary advantage the Rakshasi had in the battle was the advantage of surprise. If Erhart can convince Demetrius of the imperative notion of the conflict, then you should be able to fight back.

(Rakshasi indeed absorb all magical spells as regained health, but they're perfectly vulnerable to things like being stabbed in the face.)

Angel's Rest. The townsfolk were going about their business as usual, when suddenly a merchant convoy came racing into town with a bloodied and dying soldier lying on a bale of hey. The townsfolk quickly began gathering around the flustered merchants, and the commotion drew out the Captain of the Guard, who was quick to summon the aid of a cleric and to bring the soldier back into his office.

This soldier belonged to a patrol of twenty-five armed men. This was no small news, since no other faction had dared trifle with Dominion soldiers yet.

"Ngh... C... Captain?"
"Relax, soldier. What happened? Who hit you?"
"I... I don't even know."
"What do you mean? Did they wave to bann--"
"They weren't... human."
"Not hum--"
"Cats. The spells..."
"Kitties? Spells? You're not making sense. Are you talking about nephilim?"
"I told you... Unbelievable. They walked on two legs... Both of them. But kitties aren't that strong..."
"Both? You mean, there were only two?"
"Surprise attack. We were smothered in fire, and then another one lept out of the grass with a full plate mail. We were ripped apart. I survived by running... Forgive me, sir."
"You should have not ran. And yet, this news is disturbing..."

The captain leaned back in his chair contemplating that which he had no way to react to. A nephilim rebelion? But if so, how could two nephils kill twenty-five armed, strong men, even if one of the two was a shaman? What motive did a wounded soldier have for lying?

"Captain Erhart! Get out here NOW!"

Erhart lept out of his chair and raced outside. What he saw were all of his soldiers gathering to the north side of the city. What he saw in the distance was a small force moving towards Angel's Rest-- small in terms of expeditionary armies, that is.

The force numbered 50 strong. And the more he stared, the more he realized that these men were abnormally tall, well-armed... And covered with thick coats of fur. Erhart's men weren't outnumbered, but if Pvt. Colgate's statements were correct, then they were also outgunned.

"Men! Assemble ramparts out of crates for our archers to shoot from! Someone find all of the doctors or clerics that are in this city. Everyone who can carry a weapon, get to the front of the city. Women and children should run south immediately! Go now!"

The civilians began to flee as peasants took up whatever implements they could manage. The archers readied their longbows and crossbows. But still, the defenders were not particularly concerned over their situation. Nephils never scared the Empire, even ones with magi and plate mail.

And then, the feline forces stood still outside of Angel's Rest's firing range for a solid ten minutes. Erhart and his men were getting impatient. Then, they began to hear a cacophany of screaming and wailing from the south, drawing ever closer.

The army saw a force of similar size marching on the city from the south, forcing the women and children to have evacuated before back into the city. The soldiers stood paralyzed with their wives and children facing axes and swords. Then, a heavily-armored feline stepped out from amongst the ranks. He began to speak in a stilted, awkward and archaic dialect:

"Trembling, you whom be mortals, for I am have became Bane of the Army of the Trueness of Rakshasi!"

The army was put into a weird space by the bizarre manner of speaking that 'Bane' had. That, and none of them had ever heard of 'Rakshasi,' nevermnd what the trueness of one might be. Then, Bane grabbed a woman standing at the front of the crowd by her bosom and threw her to the ground, causing her to scream in pain. Before she had the time to get up, Bane produced a gigantic pike axe from his back and sliced the woman in half down her spine, causing her innards to spill out of her cleanly dissected cadaver.

Almost as if on cue, the other rakshasi began cutting down the women and children of Angel's Rest as they attempted to flee.

"AHHH! You guys, to the north!!"

One of the soldiers had noticed that the rakshasi to the north had already begun a frontal charge on their ranks. Then, the magi on both sides prepared fireballs and threw them at the defenders, engulfing the force in a gigantic conflagration.

Captain Erhart woke up tied to a log in the ground, facing Bane in person.

"You are the troops of leading in this city, is it that you aren't?"
"I am... I am the captain of the guard, yes!"
"You are who you are, captain, send a message to whatever weak man leads your dead people!"
"What?"
"You are telling him, the man of weaker, who leads you, that you have to lost!"
"...we... lost. Yes."
"Horse!"
"Oh?"
"Horse oh! It is good of riding."
"Good for riding."
"Good of riding of you. Go and tell of death! You are weaker man of city and going to weaker man of very cities make you bigger words!"
"...what?"

Then, one of the magi said something to Bane in a foreign tongue and the brute walked away.

"Captain. Bane is an intelligent tactician, but no linguist."
"You speak Imperial!"
"Unfortunately. Well enough to speak with you. You will take a message to the leader of your people."
"..."
"Tell him that this city has been utterly and completely destroyed. We have killed everyone here but you and will do worse. Tell your leader this. We will want things from your people. Tell your leader this too."
"We are the Dominion of the--"
"I do not care. We Rakshasi do not care. We care about any magic your people have. We will take what we want."
"We will ne--"
"If your people do not give us things then we will kill everyone in your land."
"..."
"Everyone. Women, children, old men, old women, men. Everyone will die."
"..."
"You like mages in your land. You will be the first to fall to us. We are not hurt by your magics."
"What--"
"We absorb all magics. It is our power that makes your people impossible with resisting us."
"..."
"Tell him. Your leader. Here is a horse we did not kill. Take it. Go."

The rakshasi cut Erhart's ropes. Erhart jumped on the horse and gallopped south to deliver an ill omen to Demetrius.

It's not possible to replace it with a scenario's .meg/.bmp file. To change 'em in your scenarios, you'd have to send an alternate copy of Blades of Avernum Graphics (or whatever the PC equivalent is).
It's just like changing party member graphics- effectively impossible.

The Rakshasi haven't bothered attacking you yet unless you've attacked them.

EDIT: This assumes that you KNOW of them. And yours is the only faction that would.

Just FYI, none of the factions know about the Rakshasi unless they were scrying specifically for that purpose. The Dominion might be able to know that the Rakshasi arrived and *maybe* where they went in Valorim, but that's about it.

(In Valorim, the Rakshasi are in the old Troglo Castle area.)

Northern Coast of Vantanas. Scarmiglione is waiting patiently during the red night while Satsujin stares blankly into a rocky expanse before him.

Scarmiglione turns towards Satsujin and says, "So, this sky is a hidden message..."
"Oh?"
"Yes, I know. I can read your language, as you may or may not realize."
"Then you know my plan."
"It's not that complex... But it is vicious. Dismantle the Empire, summon an army that the disunited world cannot hope to beat..."
"Ah, but I didn't dismantle the Empire. If I could do that retroactively, I'd have wiped it off the face of the planet the moment I had you transformed."
"Then why didn't you?"
"Because there were archmages watching my back. I already risked being found out as a traitor for sending you there in the first place."
"So you didn't cause the rebellion?"
"I didn't say that. For instance, how could all people across the globe rebel at one time? Certainly, it required a certain amount of organization. And sabotaging the power structure of the Empire's magi was no small feat either."

Then suddenly, five red portals open. Then ten. Then fifty. Out of them stumble bands of tiger-humanoids, some wearing silk robes (usually either black or red) and others wearing full suits of armor. All of them seem disgruntled and shiftless.

The tigers all begin assembling into one large, squabbling mass. Murmurs begin to create a loud buzz. Some of the beings begin to quarrel with one another. Frustrated, Satsujin raises his hands up into the sky and a gigantic pillar of flame rises from them, lighting the entire area. All of the tiger-humanoids turn towards Satsujin and many begin to kneel down to him. Scarmiglione slowly begins walking towards Satsujin.

"Fellow Rakshasi! I am Satsukin, your new leader. The Red Star has left us, and yet I-- NO!"

Satsujin heard the heaving of Scarmiglione lifting his scythe into the air, but had no time to avoid his lightning-quick swoop. With a burst of flame, Satsujin's head flew backwards while his body writhed about on the ground until Scarmiglione sent the tip of his scythe through it.

And with that, one of the primary leaders of the revolution died, his secrets dying with him.

The Rakshasi were infuriated, but many were frightened. Then Scarmiglione stood atop Satsujin's bleeding corpse and began shouting to the Rakshasi in their own tongue, surprising them.

"Satsujin is dead. I am he who brought the red star into the sky. I am the Beacon to whom all of you journeyed. I am the leader of you now!"

At that moment, the red star whirled out of existence and came back into the giant, spiked red ruby sitting in Scarmiglione's hand.

The Rakshasi all bowed down to Scarmiglione. Scarmiglione set down the ruby, raised his scythes, and summoned forth intense, red flames all over his body.

"Take your giant, red portals and move across the planet! How many of you are there?"

The Rakshasi turned back into their small groups and began a head-count. Within a minute, they had added together their entire number. 2,784, to be precise.

"Very well! Two hundred and fifty of you, you will remain here on Vantanas. One thousand of you will go to Pralgad; the same number will go to Valorim. The remnants of you will go to Aizo. Understood?"

The Rakshasi all bowed their heads, shouted, raised fists or indicated some form of acceptance. Then, a powerful-looking Rakshasa stepped out of the ranks.

"Who are you?"
"It is good to see you again, my lord."
"Er... Yes, but do I know you?"
"Hmm... I suspect you have done many things in the intervening millenium since we last met."
"You... I remember you! You are..."
"Yes. I am the reason that the ruby you used, my lord, exists."
"Doctor..."
"Yes. Strange that you wouldn't remember me, but I would like to assist you in your endeavor by staying here and helping you coordinate our troop locations."
"Ahh! Then I accept your obedience."
"Very well... Then, you fiends! Go forth, and wreak havoc on the inferior nations. Dominate them and bring their leaders' heads to our leader, the Red Star!"

"Well..." thought the Doctor. "If this so-called 'Master' were actually the true leader he claims to be, he would not fail to recognize his mentor, regardless of the situation. This means that I have nothing to fear from him. He appears to be more powerful than I am, but if I play my cards correctly, he may end up no more than a nuisance."

The Rakshasi began constructing larger portals. On the various continents, they stayed secret from humanity and began constructing staging grounds using their advanced magics and inspired manpower.
