Scripting problems in Blades of Avernum

Your REAL problem is probably that you are missing a right quotation mark. Because of that, the right parenthese in question is read as part of the string and, therefore, NOT part of the code. Look for that.

Well, haven't played any FFs but the ones that came out on PC, but I don't see much surpassing 7, that was a GREAT game... Probably the only big-time commercial game as good as the SW ones. Of course, 8 wasn't quite that good, but I still liked it a lot.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that I've never played Gateway, but that it is a damn good book (by, you guessed it, Frederick Pohl) and I recommend it to anyone. Oh, and btw, Betrayal at Krondor was also based on a book, but I would definitely get one of the Magician books before that one; they're much better.

here

Given the number of times this question has cropped up, maybe a link is in order on SW's main page.

EDIT:Whoops, TM got there first...

For a good laugh at Ayn Rand's expense, see the South Park episode in which the illiterate cop learns to read, and waxes lyrical about the wonders of reading, but then is given "Atlas Shrugged" and forsakes reading forever, because of "this piece of crap." This is all the recommendation I need never to touch an Ayn Rand book.

Religion, Homosexuality, the Usual in General

Ah, yes. My familiarity is more with contemporary church teachings. But, anyways, the main thrust of my argument is that the Church's hostile attitude towards homosexuality is because of its purely recreational (And by recreational, I don't mean it doesn't express a real and heartfelt love, I just mean it isn't bringing new life into the world) nature. That said, I know a few gay people, and as far as I'm concerned all of them are good people, and have less to worry about at the End of the World than some straight people I know. Although, given the contemporary Church's teachings on love/forgiveness, my "damned" list doesn't include anyone I've actually met, just stock favorites like Hitler, Stalin, etc.

EDIT: spelling and clarity

Well, anyways, there might be enough conflicts within the body of work that the scenario design community puts out to make the types of conflict Kelandon is worried about into a moot point.

Namely: how do you know that homosexuality doesn't work well, isn't ideal, isn't how we're supposed to be?
Well, like I said before, the Christian (and, I think, Muslim and Jewish) view on sex in general is that it is good only in so far as that it results in new life. Sex, including the heterosexual variety, solely for pleasure is frowned on. As gays cannot possibly create new life, the Church's position is that they should not engage in sexual activity. The Church dislikes homosexuals for the same reason it dislikes birth control: all the fun, none of the responsibility.

I'm a noob, so maybe I shouldn't be posting here, but I think I'll put my two cents in. I believe, according to my religion, that homosexuality is wrong, but I think there are many worse things you could do, and if you are basically a good guy/girl, you'll be all right, afterlife-wise. I also would like to point out the existence of brother/sisterhoods of Christian, chaste gays who do not live a lie by pretending to be straight but do not engage in homosexual activity. Just throwing that out there. And I think God frowns on sex for pleasure in all its incarnations, and gay sex lacks even the pretense of procreation, but, again, not a fire-and-brimstone kind of frowning here.

EDIT 2: There was a filter on my end. Have since expunged that particular difficulty by means of some serious down-and-dirty registry messing-with.

Go to the TOWN that you want the party to start in, click on "Set starting location" in the start menu, and put one in town (There is both a town and an outdoor starting location. The outdoor one should be outside of the starting town) Hope I helped!

This is just a guess, but is run_animation_sound a call? I think it's play_sound, but I posted this without looking at the docs, so I'm not sure.

Yeah, like Thuryl said, I've found my mage to be most useful in outdoor encounters, and big indoor fights like in the Melora Opal Fort. In Boss Fights, it's all the priest, the fighter, and the archer. My fighter, blessed and hasted, is the only one who can really do enough damage to keep them from getting tedious (This is where I miss the good old "Kill" spell). I wouldn't say that mages are really necessary, though, as my fighter could easily win most outdoor encounters by himself, fireblast/lightning spray just makes everything go much faster.

EDIT: I do, however, use my mage to haste my priest(and fighter), but potions could do that too.

Well, the way I see it, you can make them your own after you gain some levels. For instance, my archer is basically a rogue as well, because for a few levels I gave him nothing but tool use, so now he has like 20, and disarming traps and unlocking doors is a foregone conclusion.

Uh, speaking of spelling, I've never heard of a "panal," GIFTSare2d2, you might want to fix that because it's your scenario and all.

Calls that we wish existed (part two) in Blades of Avernum Editor

Another call I would like to see is
short char_has_item_in_slot(short which_char, short_which_item, short_which_slot);
You would also be able to put -1 for which item, in which case it would check for any item. This could sort of supercede char_has_item_of_class_equip, and that way you could check if a character has a weapon equipped, even if it came from another scenario.

Actually, berserkers, archers, soldiers, clerics, and sorcerers are all quite useful. I use them all. They save time, and I get more skill points. Win-win situation, in my mind.

Actually, the character classes do get more skill points than the customs. The only class I've tried to recreate is Berserker, and that has about 7 or 8 more points than a custom character.

What are your files named? In the BoA editor, you have to go into the "town" menu and select "town details." There, where it says "Town Script," pick a filename. Create a file by that name. Create another file by that name, and add "dlg" to the end. Then, make a Town Script in the first file (see the docs). After that, put your modified dialog stuff in the file with "dlg" on the end. Not that it is not ".dlg" but just "dlg" (it is still a .txt file). Hope this helped!
