I'm a 18-year-old single virgin male from Finland, hello to you very much. I'm spending my third and last year in vocational intstitute and hope to get a job during summer. I'm inteterested in a variety of academical subjects, although ain't expert in any. Deep in my heart I'm an anarchist, but it seems to me us humans aren't really suited for anarchy. Thus, I often voice exactly opposite opinions, favoring strictly regulated and authoritave systems. In other words, "peace through tyranny with me as the tyrant". What comes to religion, I'm namely and evangelic lutheran, but my actual beliefs can be... confusing. I could summarize them with the sentence "whatever is, is God". -------------------- Life is a neverending carneval where everyone has multiple costumes. I just hope mine are pleasing to the eye. Another slight update: I finally have a working, albeit crude, map of the world. I haven't found a chance to scan it yet, though. I've only got chitterbugs, kuriaiw, and xyrrian mythology left to finish; I decided that rhinos, molds and detailed cultural descriptions can wait. I'll get most of what's left to do done today. This means that if we are to have those Polaris subforums, NOW would be the time to start making them. Aran, Alorael or whoever holds sufficient power, look here please. The structure should be roughly as follows: World of Warce Yet another fantasy world being constructed by Polaris citizens! Subforums: Herbiary, Bestiary, Geography, Cultures, Mythology, Linguistics, History, Short stories Subforum descriptions: Herbarium: From greatest trees to small mosses and lichen, all manners of plants and fungi go here. If it's alive and stationary, it likely goes here. This section also includes diseases, in lack of a better place. Bestiary: From the tiniest insects to large mammalian predators and giant seaserpents, all creatures of the animal kingdom go here. This includes civilized species also. If it's alive and moves, it likely belongs here. Geography: All manners of maps, weather charts and regional descriptions go here, from small valleys to the greatest of continents. Cultures: The customs and societies of civilized beings, from single inviduals and families to great empires, are documented here. History of past, current and future interactions between them also belong here. Mythology: Documents about fairy tales, religious myths and magical traditions of Warce are placed here. Also contains discussions about cosmology and true magic of warce. Linguistics: for those of you who have enough skill and daring to make new languages for our creatures to speak. Short stories: If you ever want to write, or already wrote, a free-form narrative taking place in our good world, store it here for further reference. If anyone comes up with better descriptions for different sections, spit them out. -------------------- Life is a neverending carneval where everyone has multiple costumes. *grumble* Where did all the interested people go? I'm seriously becoming sick of double-posting. And now for the actual news: because the rest of my life also wants attention, my preliminary work is taking longer than I initially thought. I got gifers, redmoss and stoneburner to workable condition and have the prep-speeches in store, but that still leaves lot to do. And I still haven't found a decent map template to work on; if someone wants to lend a hand, it's not too late! -------------------- Life is a neverending carneval where everyone has multiple costumes. quote:Don't worry too much about the name. If you ever generate a tribe of people in the world, they're free to call Warce whatever they want. I might chance it, but I can't come up with anything better right now. Seriously. As for south- and norfolk, I was thinking of something quite different than interspecies war. You'll see after I get the descriptions done. -------------------- Life is a neverending carneval where everyone has multiple costumes. I just hope mine are pleasing to the eye. Great, a triple-post. This time, I must've killed a frakkin' elephant. Okay, okay, let's put grumbling aside for a moment; I finally have a little bit of material to share with you. Say hello to the prologue for our project: Warce (pronounced as wanted) Far, far away from our world, in some distant corner of the universe the planet of Warce floats in the void, circling around it's sun with its sibling planets. It's not a world where life has an easy time, as its crust is in constant turmoil, with the earth quaking and volcanoes spitting fire being everyday life of its inhabitants. Most of the land there is has formed into huge mountain ranges, with the highest peaks rising to the height of twelve kilometers. What little flat ground there is is suspectible to huge tsunamis caused by the shaking of earth, which sometimes reach hundreds of kilometers inland. Many are the cultures that have been swept away by the giant waves. To worsen this even more, the void in which Warce floats is all but empty; thousands of years ago two large comets collided in its orbit, and Warce is still floating through a cloud made of their shards. Most pieces burn away when entering Warce's atmosphere, seen only as numerous falling stars, but some of the larger chunks have caused horrible destruction and greatly altered the cause of history, often to the mischief of Warce's inhabitants. For all what we know, civilization, or even high sentience, might not be possible in Warce as it is now if it weren't for the Flow. The Flow, a never ending, ever present stream of metadimensional energy constantly washes over Warce, lending its strength to all living who roam the world's surface. This has allowed complex beings to thrive, making possible the diverse and sometimes logic-defying creatures that inhabit the plains, mountains and seas alike. You see, when many small beings cluster together, it causes a tiny bend in the fabric of space, and when flow contacts those bends, it crystallizes into what are often known as souls; these souls not only strengthen life with their blessing, they also record memories of those creatures they have belonged to, and maybe, when the suns die and Warce and its siblings are reduced to dust they were once born from, those souls will be carried by the flow and preserve the memory of Warce for all eternity. Unfortunately, the inhabitants of Warce seldom ponder about these things; they struggle in their world of constant chance, trying to make a living out of barren rocks, salty seas and flooded plains. Only those who have much of time and energy to spare can muster enough knowledge and concentration to learn about the Flow and harness it to their benefit, and they are few and far between. Most civilized beings live in poor conditions, stuck in a state of barbarism forced on them by their hostile world. Luckily, they and their world are still young, and their predecessors have shown that great knowledge and prosperity are possible even in a world which does its best to kill you. Only time will tell how things will turn out for them... --- Any complaints about the name will be faced with amused indifference, however that is possible. As a side note, I'd still like someone to help me with the map. As another side note, if there's an administrative person of Polaris lurking around here somewhere, I'd like to chit-chat about weather with him. Oh, and those possible Polaris sub-forums as well. My current to-do list before I'll let you play with me: - Make descriptions for the advanced species: southfolk, norfolk, gifers and xyrrian (deceased) - create some mythology about the culture that was formed by the xyrrians - create an example culture of norfolk and gifers - make descriptions for some bottom-of-the-food-chain plants: redmoss, stoneburner fruit, hangman's mold. - make descriptions for some small animals which eat the aforementioned plants: chitterbug, mossgnaw, kuriaiw and woolly rhino. Nevermind that the last one isn't small - make decent prep-speech for creating more flora and fauna (and mythology and...) As you can probably see, this might take a while. I hope to be done at Friday night, but don't count on it. -------------------- Life is a neverending carneval where everyone has multiple costumes. I just hope mine are pleasing to the eye. *I double-post, and yet another puppy dies* The biggest bottle-neck in my operation is quickly becoming, ta-daa!, maps. As I myself am busy with writing basic ecosystems and half dozen other things, I'd like to utilize those interested in this project to help me. I'd greatly appreciate if someone could produce me a (relatively empty) map template of a roughly Earth-sized spherical object. Bonus points if it has lines of latitude and longitude drawn. -------------------- Life is a neverending carneval where everyone has multiple costumes. I just hope mine are pleasing to the eye. I suggest that we wait till May before restarting this, and when we do we should fast-forward the plot with maybe a year or something like that. That way, if some players remain absent, we can handwave their inactive characters by saying that their gods went on their own ways and our characters haven't seen them since. -------------------- Life is a neverending carneval where everyone has multiple costumes. I'll start preliminary work during this week, such as creating templates, writing down general rules etc. It'll likely take me a few days after the poll is closed to make a reasonable background, after which the real work can begin. So far the world is becoming spherical (with lots of mountains) and relatively non-magical, and whatever magic there'll be will follow rules previously discussed in this topic. If some of you have differing opinions, now's the time to let 'em out. -------------------- Life is a neverending carneval where everyone has multiple costumes. Currently I think I will be inserting three default species: two human and one ferret-like. The last one will probably have all the aggression you'll ever need. Rest of the species will be picked by polling. -------------------- Life is a neverending carneval where everyone has multiple costumes. I just hope mine are pleasing to the eye. Bah. Eating lyed fish requires no guts at all. It's basically tasteless and the structure resembles boiled egg, so it isn't that hard to chew on. And what's wrong with mämmi? It might look like crap, but it certainly doesn't taste bad. With some cream or milk, it's really tasty. -------------------- Life is a neverending carneval where everyone has multiple costumes. I was thinking about Möbius strip as a physical shape, but what you've been thinking about is interesting as well. I'm not sure I fully grasped the idea, though. On other matters, here's what I've been thinking what we should do first after I get the background done: decide what other civilized beings besides humans inhabit the world. I think we ought to do that by polling as well; all who are willing can present creatures they've come up with, and then we'll choose five or six most interesting by voting. What do you think? -------------------- Life is a neverending carneval where everyone has multiple costumes. I just hope mine are pleasing to the eye.
