For the record, another such topic was this one. EDIT: Oh yeah, the other thing I intended to say: any topic can be good, even if it has been discussed before, if the discussion is new and different. Many repeated threads (Mac vs. Windows, Exile vs. Avernum, etc.) have nothing new said in each iteration, so they become rather pointless. This one appears to have new content, which is the factor that makes it good. Variations in grammar are incessant. Do you think you might ever say, "I was planning on going to the movies," rather than, "I was planning to go to the movies"? If so, you'd use an alternate (formally wrong) construction. The basic grammatical rules (agreement, tense, etc.) aren't allowed to change much because they're so fundamental to the structure of the language. But constructions — the grammar of each word — vary as much as the spelling of each foreign borrowing. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. That was a continuity question, I believe. The question is: since scrying exists in the Avernum universe (where and in what context? I remember hearing about it but have forgotten), how can there be a "new" part of the caves? Any part of the caves anywhere near Avernum would've been discovered already. The answer, I suspect, is that there are parts of the caves that are not currently inhabited (and not accessible in A1 or A2) that are also habitable and reachable by devious means not available to A1/2/4 adventurers. Therefore, there will not be a continuity problem. But then, if Jeff pulls another ZKR ("Here's a new part of the cave not related to anything you know about the caves! Just go with it!"), I will be mildly annoyed. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. A3, I'm presuming. You aren't supposed to kill Rentar directly (who is a she, by the way). You have to do some other things around the fortress first, and then use the control panel behind her. More specific instructions (if necessary) can be found probably in one of the walkthroughs or in a post which will inevitably follow this one. Rates of linguistic change are extremely variable, even within the same language. Spanish and French descend from the same language, but modern spoken Spanish is a hell of a lot closer to Latin than modern spoken French. Icelandic, for example, may have changed only somewhat over the last thousand years or so, but that is an extremely rare exception. English, the opposite extreme, no longer even remotely resembles what it was a thousand years ago. I doubt that there are any words that have not undergone at least one sound change since then, and the Anglo-Saxons would have been baffled by our array of French and Latin and Greek words (not to mention some idioms that have come from as far away as China). But that wasn't Fatman's point, was it? He was simply saying that languages change over time, which is true, and things that were once incorrect become correct, which is also true. However, I'm more of a prescriptivist than several others here (some things are just grammatically wrong, dammit), so while I can understand the sentiment, I can't say that I much agree. That said, the errors that are made in informal conversation amongst native and non-native English speakers (and writers) alike on a message board on the Internet (for god's sake) are generally forgivable, as long as communication remains fluid, which seems to have been the case here. In other words, just drop it. :P EDIT: By the way, does it make anyone else's eyes bleed to read the abomination, "grammer"? quote:Schwa. I am told that it's like the Russian unstressed O or A (other than in the syllable preceding the stressed syllable). Interestingly, the word-final R-schwa-R combination is getting shortened to just an R in some dialects, resulting in the word "mirror" being indistinguishable from the word "mere." But that's an exceptional case.
