Yes, this is the problem when heavy stress induces vowel mutation, as any Russian should understand. :-p I personally maintain an unstressed short I, but some mutate it into a schwa. Just about everybody (at least among Americans — not sure about elsewhere) mutates an unstressed O into a schwa. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. By the way, when I say "Identical," I mean that the words are pronounced in an identical fashion. That is, there are some dialects that drop all initial H's, so that "heat" and "eat" would both sound like "eat" ("Why, this 'eat here is just intolerable!"). Some dialects also overcompensate for this tendency by adding H's to just about everything, so they'd both sound like "heat" ("Let's heat some food!"). Here's a good description of RP, and for reference (again), here's kind of what I've been going on this whole time. Again, I'm surprised at the degree to which happy tensing is being reported in all dialects. That's our first attestation on this thread of the pen/pin merger, I think, which leaves only a few features as yet unattested. I'm not sure that anyone will have such a thick New York accent as to have the curl/coil merger, and perhaps no one will have so thick a Cockney accent as to have the line/loin merger. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Apparently the loss of the /g/ in "finger" is characteristic of some Scottish dialects. (EDIT: And others... that's the interesting thing about this poll. Also, far more people are reporting saying "hap-ee" than I would've expected based on the info online.) The split of "trap" and "bath" (which had the same vowel in Middle English) didn't occur in most varieties of American English (including my own). Well, we don't actually know anything about what has happened in the slith homeland in the past couple of centuries up to A4. The sliths were banished at least one hundred and probably two hundred years before A1, which is many, many decades before A4 (although it varies, depending on who you talk to). Empire do fall, from time to time. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Smoo: Get ready to face the walls! quote:"Accent" (in this sense) is not a proper linguistic term. In casual conversation, people apparently expect that there is some universal way to pronounce English, and either the Brits, the Americans, the Aussies, or somebody else actually pronounces it correctly, and everyone else has an accent. This is not the case. There are simply dialectal pronunciations. That is, completely correct RP — British — pronunciation is rather different from completely correct General American pronunciation, so who has an accent? It is true that certain dialects are more conservative than others and therefore retain older distinctions, but after looking at the host of sound changes since Shakespeare's time, I can't say that I know for sure which dialect is the most conservative. quote:That's what makes this so entertaining. :P And yeah, you're right: I should've had something about flapping. By the way, if anyone wants to know where this comes from, check out this. I was copying most of these off of Wikipedia. I think "firn" ought to be "fern." Or possibly that's my own typo. Also, the question is not whether "should of" is correct (it's not). It's whether you would pronounce it the same way as "should've" if you were to say it. The questions have been modified slightly to clarify. I've been reading about the transition from Old English into Middle English and Middle English into Modern English, and it inspired me to create this topic so that we can all laugh at how everyone else talks funny. Here's the deal: in some dialects of English, the following pairs of words rhyme or are indistinguishable. In some dialects, they are different. Which category do you fall into? Vowel mergers/splits: Rhyme: trap, bath (the vowels, anyway) Rhyme: father, bother Identical: cot, caught Rhyme: foot, goose Identical: Lennon, Lenin Identical: pin, pen Identical: line, loin Identical: coil, curl Final vowel of "happy" rhyme with vowel of "meet" R madness: Identical: father and farther Identical: Mary, marry, merry Rhyme: mirror, nearer Rhyme: fern, fir, fur Identical: horse, hoarse L madness Rhyme: salary, celery Identical: fill, feel Identical: fell, fail Identical: full, fool Consonants Same middle consonant: Singer, finger Identical: Heat, eat Identical: Should've, should of (if you were to say "should of") Identical: Wait, weight Identical: Wine, whine [ Sunday, March 19, 2006 22:37: Message edited by: Kelandon ] -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Also, if a thread hasn't been posted in for several days, it's generally considered good manners not to pollute it with garbage. The Empire and Avernum are two political entities. The sliths have many individual bands, but no one empire (unless one counts whatever may be going on in the slith homeland). The vahnatai also have many clans, one of which (Rentar-Ihrno's) is large enough to be significantly influential. The nephilim have many clans, also, one of which (the Ratbane clan) was once influential but is no more. I still count only two real major political powers. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. These things don't happen quickly, you know. It takes a while for the mods to discuss and get everything in order.
