Chopping Block. Sadly teetering on the edge of ending, as it has been for some time, but creative gory death never gets old. —Alorael, who would provide a link if he weren't reasonably certain that it would be a violation of the Code of Conduct. They could, in theory, have limbs and bodies infinitely capable of rearranging themselves that they can personally function as everything from a mortal and pestle to a loom to a port crane capable of lifting several ton loads. I find that so hard to describe plausibly that I'd rather see yet another humanoid alien. Let's go back to arms. Even if you have no tools, you really need limbs, preferably with opposable digits, to maneuver pieces of wood into the ground or blocks of sod out of the ground to make a house. If you want clothes, you need a way to weave them. If you want anything, you have to manufacture it, which requires progressively more complex tools. Unless all finished goods grow on trees in some bizarre hypothetical world, limbs are necessary and tools are too. There is a tendency to assume a two arm, two leg model, which isn't really necessary, but in movies an extra limb means more trouble acting and in RPGs extra limbs mean someone wanting to wield that many weapons at once. —Alorael, who will still admit that telekinesis would work just as well as limbs in most cases. It still wouldn't obviate the need for tools much of the time, though, unless it is capable of truly astounding micromanipulation. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

I have been blessed with a full complement of skin disorders. Various topical treatments with seven syllable names help, but eventually it becomes a choice between having bad skin and living in a constant inch thick layer of ooze. There's such a thing as too much medication. —Alorael, who does not, in fact, grow mold. It's actually a species of lichen. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

The Bible says the occult is real, so denying it without proving it (an impossibility) is meaningless in the context of this debate. I'll ask a simple question (again). What makes Harry Potter worse than all the other fantasy books, and there are many? Popularity doesn't make any sense, because if Harry Potter disappeared then something else would be the most popular. Do you object to all fantasy? If so, what are you doing on the boards of a company that makes fantasy games? —Alorael, who would like to see some psychology paper citations with everyone throwing around beliefs on how impressionable children are. He'll freely admit that he doesn't know. Now, where's some evidence? Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Indeed. I have a perfectly spherical head, a flat, lipless mouth, and no nose. My eyes are black and beedy. —Alorael, who is not stick-thin no matter how hard he tries. After a certain amount of life-extending near-starvation dieting, his shrinking frame has to stop because his bones are protruding painfully. Someone else did it, and he or she must have liked E3 more than the others (E3 was the latest at the time). It's allegedly a poor port, though. Djur has claimed, I believe, that E3 runs better if you use the Windows port with Wine. —Alorael, who would guess that Jeff doesn't have the time, energy, Linux experience, or market for ports to Linux. On the other hand, he may just be getting DJur back for all his disparagement of Jeff's games. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

If I get less than 6 hours of sleep, I have no trouble waking up but tend to have some trouble in the afternoon. By the evening I'm fine again. If I get more than 6 hours of sleep, I have a great deal of trouble waking up but no trouble at all once I'm actually ambulatory. No matter how much sleep I have or haven't gotten, I always have a great deal of trouble falling asleep. I begrudge myself the wasted hours of not sleeping and not doing anything either. —Alorael, who usually gets between five and seven hours of sleep per night. He tries to alternate, more or less, because too many days with only five hours become very unpleasant. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Sometimes people megapost by accident. It's one of the UBB's many downsides. If I shower more than once a day, my skin starts turning white and red and I spontaneously bleed out of the backs of my fingers and occasionally from my face. If I shower less than once a day, I feel like a dirty old man in more ways than one. If I wait long enough, I can become a literal "viejo verde" and I'm not sure all of the mold is non-toxic. This places me squarely in the once per day like clockwork category. —Alorael, who has gone a few days without bathing on some trips. It tends not to be fun, and his skin starts turning colors and bleeding. He really didn't get lucky in the skin department. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

quote:Of course, and that's why there are slimes, lizards, chitrachs, hydras, and other fauna in Avernum. Civilization, howerver, pretty much requires arms for tool use. Non-humanoid hunter-gatherers would be possible, but even that is greatly facilitated by the ability to make and use tools. —Alorael, who will use this as his explanation for why there is no great civilization of Gazers. Eyeballs are simply no good with an axe or an adze. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

I've heard rumors to the effect that having the Cooling Amulets slightly reduces all fire damage you take. I'm dubious, but if that's true then the Cooling Amulets are probably better to have than the Thought Crystal. —Alorael, who is quite sure that the Thought Crystal isn't useful. Haste and move quickly through the room and the Crystal Souls are no threat at all. Then you can still talk to Bon-Ihrno, too. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

I would have a large pit, similar in size and construction to a hot tub, built in my house. I would fill it with hundred dollar bills. i would wallow and probably cackle. I would then buy myself a new rifle and some skribbane. Then some more. Then I'd be out of money. —Alorael, who seriously has no idea what he'd do. Probably like everyone else, he'd pay off debts, buy some nice things, give a lot to charity, and stash some away. He'd be tempted to try buying votes in the Senate, but a billion dollars doesn't go far there. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

It's much less intuitive on laptops. If you navigate by keyboard and have no numeric keypad, you can easily believe that movement is restricted to cardinal directions. It's more Ultima-esque that way. —Alorael, who doesn't know how anyone can live without a numeric keypad. He also doesn't understand how to cultivate sorghum. Could there be a causal link? I didn't know that Copenhagen was made into a movie! It's one of my favorite plays. Now I'm going to have to find it and learn whether it was botched or not. —Alorael, who actually likes Adaptation at least as much for the arguments that ensued after the movie ended than for the movie itself. Catching all the hidden self-references is much tricker than it first appears. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

If Niemand and Aran get into a fight, we have to place bets. Who's going to provide statistics and odds on them? Seletine and I are both mods, and we're the only Blademasters. It shows up only in posts in sections that we moderate. —Alorael, who would be happy with his unique, if not custom, italic title if it were not shared. So he's really got something like two almost unique, almost custom titles. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |
