insufficient arrows on laptop keyboard in The Avernum Trilogy

Usually arrows move you in the cardinal directions by the map, which looks diagonal on the screen but actually works better most of the time. You can use the mouse for 8-directional movement or invest in a full keyboard.

—Alorael, who is a little curious about door problems. It sounds like maybe your keyboard somehow moves you NE-SE-SW-NW, which would make navigation difficult.

-7.12, -7.85

—Alorael, who has moved economically right a bit, back to an earlier position. He's hovered around -8 socially for a long time now. He also feels much more competent to opine about social issues than economic ones, which may account for the drift and stability of those axes, respectively.

This is a graemlin: :D

—Alorael, who supposes disabling graemlins would make that appear as two characters, a colon and a capital D. Now you have slightly more unhelpful knowledge. Sherlock Holmes would forget such things immediately.

Be nice. Don't ruin good, clean fun with egregious spam.

—Alorael, who is not a function. He's also a little bit sad every time Ed's name is mentioned, particularly given that most of the mentions are from you and you weren't even around when he was removed from the community. Let it rest. Please.

There's no way into the area behind that gate, and consequently also no way to get that book. There are enough books elsewhere that you don't need it. X's rooms that can't be reached are also truly unreachable. Even if you cheat to enter, there's nothing in there.

—Alorael, who has another, shorter way of saying all this: Jeff Vogel is a big tease.

That's where we disagree. Religion has many elements, and ethics is only one of them. Most of those elements can also exist independently, and ethics is definitely one of those. Ethics without religion is just fine.

—Alorael, who also supposes he must assert that endless FYTs are lame and you'd have to be blind not to see them coming.

1. I don't like turkey. Mom and dad don't really like turkey. The likelihood of such a dinner being made is 2, and my opinion towards it is also 2.

2. I'm not a big fan of cranberry sauce either.

3. Yes, and it has very slowly grown on me.

4. None of the above.

5. Adores what now?

6. Skribbane.

—Alorael, who finds himself culinarily and censurially unsatisfied.

FHT.

—Alorael, who agrees that religion is a form of ethics, and it can be a very good form. (It can also be terrible, of course, given how immense a category religion is.) It's just not the only one.

The easiest solution to gold is to go back to somewhere you've already cleared, like the goblins you first dealt with. There are probably some swords lying around somewhere. Pick them up and sell them.

—Alorael, who frequently found himself short on cash in Nethergate: Resurrection thanks to all the trainers. Short five gold was less common.

I see you are a Paul McCartney fan: "In this ever-changing world in which we live in...."

I thought about making the grammar completely butchered, opted not to, and then failed to un-butcher, resulting in only moderately humorous writing.

—Alorael, who would apologize if he didn't like how it turned out. And there you can see why this is non-up-puttable nonsense.

Terror is definitely a weighted sock. It gets up no matter how much you hit it, and getting hit by it is like being smacked with a lead weight. Still, getting hit is not nearly as bad as getting nuked.

—Alorael, who still wonders about terrorism. Even if America wanted to capitulate, there's no way to do so. The terrorists can't actually accomplish anything but killing people, and killing enough people for a "Mission Accomplished" seems unlikely.

I've only seen it attributed to Churchill, which makes me think it probably came from him or from a single source deliberately attributing it to him. The internet is inconclusive.

We aren't, as far as officials are saying, at any risk of spontaneous geocide, or more specifically the launching of vast nuclear arsenals.

Sure, someone may nuke someone else at any time, and anyone could be sneaking dirty bombs anywhere, but nobody's got the missiles pointed pointedly right now!

—Alorael, who can sleep an extra fifteen minutes each night secure in that knowledge.

As we've seen, people who edit out the entire contents of their posts can make threads very nonsensical. Deletions would only make that worse. I like things how they are.

—Alorael, who does not, of course, like the UBB. It's a clunky, crotchety old dinosaur. If there were any easy way to migrate to a new board, he'd say do it immediately. In the absence of a simple solution, he still encourages switching to some supported forum software.

Are there any exclusive *nix users here? If not, I think everyone should be answering yes to question one. An exclusive or might get rid of a few and would actually be an interesting question.

20/20 vision is considered functional. Completely healthy visual acuity is somewhat better. Average vison is much worse, or would be without glasses and contacts.

—Alorael, who woke up this morning with no ability to resolve images. He obtained someone else's glasses, which allowed him to fail to resolve images that were out of focus in the first place.

My usual way of phrasing it is to call myself in a believer in a personal God quaquaquaqua with white beard quaquaquaqua. I don't believe in scripture or religion except as human text and human organizations.

My tongue isn't in my cheek. It's sticking out at you. Also, my eyes are crossed and my fingers are stuck in my ears. I may be saying, "Nyah!" as well.

You want mundane threads about video game code and posts counting how many times you’ve posted to be redirected to God. Oh yeah, you get mad about it…at least part of you does. I can't tell if this is serious or not, but I'm very afraid that it is.

—Alorael, who offers the counterproposal that the smug atheists here enjoy feeling superior to poor, ignorant Bible-thumpers, and it's easiest to get that fix when someone is trumpeting his poor, ignorant, Bible-thumping ways in the appropriate thread.
