Radix, better known as Infernal, is not a native speaker of English. English is the "stupid bastard language" for having absurdly counterintuitive spellings, a complaint with which I empathize.

—Alorael, who sees only doom and pain in the future of this thread, and who will thus deliver the sweet touch of death. Or the sweet bullet. Whatever it is, it's sweet and needed badly about now.

Berzerk is not a word. Neither is berzerker.

—Alorael, who would like to see some Wicker Man titles handed out. Show some love for Nethergate and certain argumentative tactics that are perennial favorites in Spiderweb debates.

It costs 100-10*Luck, I believe, and it gives you Parry.

—Alorael, who also always waits on Bows and Sharpshooter (and Thrown Missiles, if he were ever to use them) until they can be bought in Camp Samuels.

Did I miss the first trial? in Avernum 4

He is supposed to hurt you a lot. The easiest way to deal with it is to send in one character with no cold resistance and no buffs that will reduce damage. Augmentation is very helpful, though. Just let the skeleton beat up the character and have your other characters heal as necessary. It will take a while, but you'll take enough damage.

—Alorael, who doesn't like that trial very much. It requires almost no thinking and a great deal of patience.

Restarting or continuing? in Avernum 4

I play through A4 with only the First Aid that can be purchased, not any from training. It's perfectly fine to get through the demo without any.

I also play through without training any number of other skills until I've purchased my points, but that is because I am crazy.

—Alorael, who concedes that it makes the demo a bit harder, but it's no problem in the long run.

One of the switches is much harder than the others for reasons unknown.

—Alorael, who believes Mr. Morph is requesting that the title of the thread not include Rentar-Ihrno's name because her reappearance is a spoiler. Not a suprising spoiler, really, but a spoiler.

Sorry, Fat-s. That was a bad thinko.

—Alorael, who slightly prefers Exile's combat to Avernum's. Neither one is overwhelmingly challenging or interesting, but area spells and walls add a little more fun, and Avernum AI is lacking.

Blosk Reinforcements in Avernum 4

You need to clean out the Darkside base, tell the commander of Fort Saffron that they're gone, and then demand reinforcements for Blosk. Then you can tell Thrac that the reinforcements are coming.

—Alorael, who may have missed a minor step in there somewhere. That's the gist of it, anyway.

Happy Easter To All! in General

The link between Passover and Easter, or specifically the fact that Easter can't just be whenever, was a strong motivation for the adaptation of the Julian calendar that became the Gregorian calendar.

—Alorael, who always wanted a wandering holiday. It seems so boring to know when everything will happen. One day, he'd like to wake up and find out that Thanksgiving has been relocated to tomorrow. This is, believe it or not, no part of his motivation to be a cultist of the Whitean persuasion.

It's hard to go disastrously wrong with a full party of four with no special handicaps. Keep playing if you want. On the other hand, you're not so far in that replaying the beginning is a great loss.

—Alorael, who is obsessive enough to restart many times to get his beginning just right.

Maybe I should get one of the odd strings that cause IE to flip text and do other bad things. Or three null terminators. Or both!

—Alorael, who isn't sure how well the UBB would handle difficult things, and the possibility of causing massive and irreparable damage is very much greater than 0. Perhaps a space would be an adequate substitute for "".

I have two cats, but I have no digital camera or scanner. They are both adorable, one because he lacks dignity entirely and the other because he has too much.

—Alorael, who has realized that his only cat photos are of deceased cats, so even a scanner can't fix his current pet photo problem. He'll work on that.

Should I Buy...? in Avernum 4

Combat is the best that's appeared in any Spidweb game. You can spend days playing with the numbers trying to make a better or more interesting but still viable party. This is a very good thing.

It's slightly more immersive than A3 and slightly less immersive than A1, if you ask me. It's still Avernum with all that entails, but it assumes a little more familiarity with Avernum and makes a few strange, jarring changes. Where did all the worms in the caves come from?

The plot is simple and entirely unsurprising, but it's done just fine for what it is. The only element that has potential never really goes anywhere. We'll see in A5!

—Alorael, who would have bought A4 if he hadn't tested it. It's worth the money for the combat alone, and the rest isn't terrible, it's just not Jeff's best.

Here. If you can't read his posts, you probably need your implants upgraded. Don't worry. By this time tomorrow they will have been fixed yesterday, and by next week you will be going to have paid in full by the end of the year, although in two months that is likely to have changed.

—Alorael, who assures you that this has made perfect sense.

"In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" tastes like irrelevance.

This is a vast conspiracy. Ed, Argh, and Llama are all in on it. And probably Stupid, too.

[Edit: Stonehenge characters don't display.]

—Alorael, who has an Xbox 2pi, which is better because it's in radians, and a Playstation Pi, which is better by about 14%. Sure, he had to bend some laws of reality to get there, but they was worth it, they was.

I don't think your bank matters as long as you have a credit card. If you don't have a credit card you can't order by phone no matter what your bank is.

What if I had an ever-changing title? What if all the titles were ever-changing? The possibilities aren't endless, but they're sufficiently large that for all intents and purposes they might as well be.

—Alorael, who will run in the next admin election to find out for himself. It's scheduled for tomorrow in a Wonderland sense!

Bows are weak? in Avernum 4
Law Bringer

It's hard to do as much damage with a bow as with a halberd, but you should definitely be getting some solid hits with bows. Just make sure to use the damaging bows. The bows you've chosen are very useful but not very damaging. I gave them to my casters and stuck with the purely powerful bows for archers.

—Alorael, who usually did a bit more damage to vahnatai with bows. They parry and riposte so much that attacking with a melee weapon is often counterproductive, and bows can do plenty of damage.
