Yes, Thuryl was directly addressing you. No, Jeff is not likely to comment, and if he does he is then legally obligated to ignore your suggestion. —Alorael, who would rather see stranded sidhe from Nethergate appear in Avernum (in a cameo, please!) than any other game cross. Or a battle between Jordan and Bojar. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Now I don't know what you're talking about. The Alien Blade doesn't require secret passages, and none of the three Mithral Broadswords have passages that stand out. One more hint is that you're getting hints to find the materials to make mithral swords, not the swords themselves. If you've reached Footracer Province it's quite possible that you've already otherwise used two of the sets of material. —Alorael, who hopes you didn't choose to get Beastslayer or Identification. I guess I can see the logic behind saying that the three swords are in three places rather than one, but none of them are in Footracer Province anyway. The Alien Blade may be the most expensive and unexpected artifact, but you do get some hints if you listen to a certain grumpy curse preventer. —Alorael, who wouldn't want to miss out on one of the advertised features of A3. What possible reason could anyone have for making a door that you either have to jump through or crawl through and that will hit you over the head or in the shins whenever you open it? —Alorael, who is actually rather curious. He thought it was one of those absurd things that only makes sense in a totally surreal dream setting. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

I remember very few dreams, and most of those are bits of ordinary life with odd twists. They're usually not surreal twists, just unreal ones. The usual daily things happen, but they happen in places that don't really exist, or with the wrong cast of characters. —Alorael, who also has recurring dreams about doors that open normally if you turn the knob one way and that swivel around a horizontal axis through the center of the door if you turn the knob the other way. He's fairly sure it represents his supressed desire for his mother. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Look somewhere that isn't Footracer Province. Try Midori and Karnold Provinces, respectively. —Alorael, who hopes he isn't missing the presence of pairs of Alien Blades and Mithril Broadswords. Those would have been nice in E3. [ Friday, May 12, 2006 08:26: Message edited by: Same Ol' Al ] Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

The consensus here, though not elsewhere, is that Argh and company are noobs. Those who are recent arrivals, as determined by arbitrary criteria, are newbies. Oldbies are, generally speaking, the one affecting a supercilious attitude towards newbies. —Alorael, who would like to request that you refrain from further speaking, individual of short tenure within these environs. I do have to say that I find reading discussions entertaining regardless of subject matter. It is unfortunate that Wikipedia is edited by the most passionate and therefore least reliable people conversant with any particular subject. Except pure math. And even then, it can get ugly. Newton's notation or Leibniz's? The latter may have won all the battles in the last few centuries, but Wikipedia can't exclude that NPOV Newtonian minority! —Alorael, who also just saw a cut out Doonesbury about creationism and drug resistance evolution. It has the same graphics as Avernum and for the most part the same engine as Avernum. The skills and spells are a bit different, but it should be familiar. —Alorael, who recommends checking to make sure you downloaded the game for the right operating system if you're experiencing total failure to function. Which Encyclopedia is better? This isn't a language like Esperanto because it isn't a language. As you may notice, it is spoken exactly like English and syntactically identical to English. The only change is in spelling in order to make it more phonetic. Except the phonetics are based on transliterations of inapplicable letters from another alphabet. Really, we might as well start writing (and speaking) EuroEnglish. At least it has closer linguistic ties to English. —Alorael, who cannot bear to inflict harm upon the tongue that has played an integral role in the works of Shakespeare and Milton, two Eliots and a few others. On the other hand, it's also given us the majority of the lamentable prose and poetry on the internet. lol indede Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

The movie is mediocre? That's a shame. Everything of Hiaasen's that I've read has been sheer, insane, brilliant environmentalist and anti-corruption genius. If you've bought the Avernum trilogy but not the CD version thereof, you get $8 off for each Avernum for a final price of $21. There's no discount for Exiles, apparently, although there once was and there are still references to it in the order form. —Alorael, who wonders if you can get RW games on a CD. If Jeff introduces more races, which strikes me as unnecessary, he should not create new races from whole cloth. He's got a world and more races that already exist could be used if they have to be. That's goblins, troglodytes, vahnatai, and yes, GIFTS. —Alorael, whose list is not exhaustive. Threads are communist. From each according to his ability, and then they belong to the people. Note that ability means ability to produce good threads, not ability to press the New Topic button. —Alorael, who has another theory. Slith avatars are actually slimes created by Rakshasa. In disguise! And they have plasma blasters in their spears! Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

I view the plot of Perdido Street Station as an excuse. It's among the most overused plots of fantasy mixed with a little gothic horror. It's just a pretext for the author to show off his handlingers, Weaver, automatic electrical sacrifice ritual machine, and cameo by traditional RPG adventurers. As I've said before, I prefer a good world to a good plot a lot of the time, and New Crobuzon is a very good steam-gothic-fantasy-Oz world. Its elements aren't unique, per se, but it comes together to be something not quite like anything else I've read. —Alorael, who actually likes Miéville's insistence on dropping references to other places and things without further elucidation or use. Torque is horrible (and a thinly-veiled reference to nuclear weapons), but it's not relevant. A city full of the undead is mentioned in passing (and more than in passing in a later book), but it's never central. It helps keep the books from falling into the trap of heroes saving the world and making everything perfect and boring. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |
