OOC: Ok, Frozen Feet. I will approve it for now. However, if you turn this Rescue Mission RP into a fantasy one, you are out.

Anyone know why isn't Alec posting?

IC: The other adventurers watch as Garath swims to the other side. He reaches the other in safety and appears to have had no trouble whatsoever in his endeavor. Chadussid speaks up again.

Chadussid: "Alright. I think we should vote on whether or not to follow him. The water may contain hidden dangers that we have not yet seen. However, it?s all up to you. All in favor of crossing raise your hands."

Almost all the adventurers raise their hands.

Chadussid: "Then it?s settled. We will cross. I suggest that we all cross in one mass, that way we will have less of a chance of being picked off than we would if we went across one by one. We might as well get started. It's beginning to get too dark to see. Can one of you mages provide us with some light so we can see where we are going?"

The mages groan in unison and then starting talking amongst themselves. Finally, they stop and one walks to the bank of the stream. The female mage then starts chanting some words and four pillars of light appear above the water on either side of their swim path. It's bright enough to illuminate their way, and yet dark enough to keep demons from noticing them. The group of adventurers then enter the water and start making their ways across.

IC: Daniel and Oskoth walk along the road on the other side of the bridge and then stop when they realize that there is no path to the ruins.

Oskoth: "Wait, wait, wait... This can't be right. There is no road leading up to the ruins from here. How can that be? All of the other ruins have one."

Daniel: "Maybe that's why they built the bunker here. With no road leading to it, the demons would most likely never know it's there. Hence, a demon-free refuge for emergencies."

Oskoth: "That sounds like a plausible explanation. But how do we find it?"

Daniel: "Well, according to the map, we are standing due north of it. So all we have to do is go directly south through the forest and we should run right into it."

Oskoth: "That works for me, but what about traps? I doubt they went through all the trouble to keep this place hidden and safe and forgot to set traps..."

Daniel: "Well, we will just have to keep our eyes open for them. There will probably be some, but we are both experienced and should be able to spot them."

Oskoth: "Right, well, let's be on our way. It's already getting dark. I'll use a weak light spell to illuminate our way. Too bright and it might attract demons."

Daniels: "Good thinking. Let's go."

With that, Oskoth picks up a piece of wood and makes a magical torch. Just bright enough to alert them to any traps that they may encounter ahead of them without endangering themselves to rogue demons. They then both head south into the forest directly towards the ruins.

OOC: Come on people, this RP was doing so well. Now all of the sudden you all stopped posting. When I said I wanted to slow the pace for others, I didn't mean to the point where the RP seems dead. :P

Here is a map of everyone's current location. The red dot with the "x" in it shows where the bombs exploded and fire has the road blocked. The purplish pink dot shows where Eferas, Rey, and Raymond are. The yellow dot shows where Daniel and me are. The lime green dot shows where everyone else is.

Cut and paste this link to your Internet Address bar. Clicking on it will not work.

OOC: Sorry, Alec, I messed that last post up. I never intended to say that the bomb actually used gunpowder. I was using the gunpowder as an example of what technology would be available in this world. I welcome bombs of a sort. Magic oriented ones, like wards and triggered magic traps like the huge explosion on the road are okay. Shrapnel bombs, like Alec specified are welcome as well. However, all of them should be used in moderation. It's not really necessary to have them around every turn.

I think it would be interesting if we add some more, primitive traps to the RP as well. Traps like bear traps, hidden pits, dart traps, spear traps, quicksand, and so forth.

IC: Fifteen minutes and a mile down the road, Daniel happens to notice something about the road that escapes Oskoth's attention.

Daniel: "STOP!!! The road ahead does not look right."

Oskoth: (Looking closer) "Thank god for your good eyes. I would have walked right into that one."

Oskoth gets down on his hands and knees and examines the ground closely. He then walks to the woods and gets a large stone. He steps back a few feet and tosses it at the uneven ground. The ground caves in a few feet around the stone in every direction and it reveals a large pit. It startles the both of them and causes them to jump back.

Daniel: "Sheesh, someone really wants to get rid of us!!"

Oskoth: (Looking in the pit) "I somehow doubt it was meant for us. With all those spikes down there at the bottom of the pit, it would work just as well on demons. I think we had better keep an eye out for traps like this now as well. Better mark it down."

They take the time to mark it on the map and then they continue on. Then, all of the sudden they begin hearing some people talking faintly in the distance about a bunker and crossed pillars. But look as they may, they can't see its origin.

Oskoth: "Do see where that is coming from?"

Daniel: "No, not at all. Maybe it?s being carried on the wind. There is a good breeze blowing."

Oskoth: "The wind, eh? Hmmm. Well, it sounds to me like its originating from the east of us, close to the river. The wind is blowing at us from that direction. Perhaps the group is no longer all together and has been split up somehow. Or maybe some of them went through the jungle to get to the ruins faster..."

Daniel: "Well at any rate, at least we know some of them are nearby and headed to the same ruins. Let's try to meet them there."

They hurry along the road as fast as they can.

OOC: I suggest that we start using edited maps for everyone's current location. I will work on that tomorrow. Let's give the other people in the RP a chance to breathe and catch up. This RP is moving way too fast for its own good.

And Alec, for Pete?s sake, cut down on the bomb junk. Gunpowder would have existed at this time, but complex bombs like you describe would not have. In fact, gunpowder in this world would be used primarily for spells only. Keep the traps limited to wards and mechanical traps like bear traps. Please refrain from creating complex things that no one else but you would comprehend.

IC: Oskoth tried to hurry along with the group, but began to lag behind as he wrote down all the traps marked on the ground by Chadussid. Soon he found himself alone with another man plotting the traps carefully on his map. It wasn't long before they heard several explosions just ahead of them.

Oskoth: "Great, someone set off some more wards again. We had better finish plotting these on the map. How many is this now?"

Man: "So far...seven."

Oskoth: "Is that all?"

Man: "Would you rather have more?"

Oskoth: "In a way, yes. Raymond said there were at least 35 of them set up along this road and maybe some side roads. So far, two of them have been set off behind us, and two in front of us, which makes four of them destroyed. We have seven marked so far that are intact. That leaves twenty-five more for us to find and plot. I can only hope the rest are located along this road... Say, I never asked you your name. I am Oskoth."

Daniel: "My name is Daniel."

Oskoth: "Well, Daniel, we better catch up with the others."

Daniel: "Wait, I have a better idea. How about we avoid Chadussid and take this side road here?"

Oskoth: "Are you sure that is wise? Chadussid won't be happy about that."

Daniel: "Oh the devil with him. They can look after themselves. They don't even need our help really. We can find our way towards these ruins here on the map faster if we take this side road. We can meet them all there once they arrive."

Oskoth: "I suppose that since they are the closest ruins to our present location that we can reach before dark, then they are the most likely place that Chadussid and the others will head for. Ok, I can go with that idea. Let's get going and... Oh, we better keep our eyes open for traps."

Daniel: "Right. Maybe we can take more off this list."

Oskoth: "Touché."

They start off down the side road as the sun sets lower against the horizon. There is one hour left for them to get to the ruins before dark.

OOC: Just to let you know, they are headed for the ruins that have the bunker that that Raymond, Eferas, and Rey are headed for currently. They may meet along the way.

OOC: I am rather upset right now at was has just happened. I took two hours of my time to create a post to get the RP moving again, solve the problem with Alec, and introduce new ideas that would be beneficial to everyone. However, it seems that my post has been completely overlooked by everyone just because Alec and Your Unborn Child posted only minutes after me.

I am now making everyone aware of my post because it offends me that it has been overlooked in such a way. I didn't do all that writing and work for nothing. I did it for the benefit of all the RPers.

OOC: Just to let you know Alec, I wasn't trying to attack you personally there. Sorry if it seemed that way. I just wanted to let the others in the RP decide on a leader and keep it in IC at the same time. And for the record, I don't want to be the leader. Let someone else have that role if they want to.

IC: Oskoth gets angry at the remarks that Chadussid makes and decides to speak up.

Oskoth: "Just who died and made you leader, Chadussid? This is a rescue party and everyone is equally involved. I don't think anyone here will just sit back and let you threaten people. We will all work together to survive and rid this valley of its demon filth. If we are going to have a leader, than I suggest we all vote on it."

OOC: Yes, I agree. Alec's conduct in this RP is beginning to get on my nerves slightly. Explanations are needed.

Please clear things up Alec or you are going to end up killing this RP through confusion, whether intentionally or accidentally.

IC: Whether out of pure coincidence or by an early warning that neither Oskoth or Eferas saw, Garath disappeared in the instant that they had turned their backs to observe the onslaught of the demonic horde that had suddenly appeared.

Oskoth: "Where the hell did he go so quickly?!"

Eferas: "I do not know. We had better go help the others and figure that out later. My magic has returned.?

A few minutes of fighting made it clear that the imps and demons were in fact drones sent out to scout for food and further places of advantage for controlling the valley. They were expendable and were very easily killed. Chadussid became aware of this. As the last of the drones were dispatched, he got everyone?s attention.

Chadussid: "Everyone listen!! A party of scouting drones attacked us. They were not illusions. They were very real. However, drones are not like regular demons. They are considered expendable in the demon world and are used purely for simple scouting. This is because they are easily killed, but are at the same time very easy to create and can be done so in plague proportions. We must move on to another location quickly. Every time a drone is destroyed, the real demons know it and they will soon be here to investigate. And... Ah, I see we have a new person joining the scene. Bring him here Kenthred. Now, just who are you? For your sake you better not be the assassin that is hounding us."

OOC: Character approved. If Wiseman confirms that he is a survivor, then I will allow people to post as survivors every now and then if they wish. However, I will not allow any Demon Lord or demon characters right now. Maybe later.

Drakefyre, your character is good.

IC: Oskoth looks around at the unfolding scene with the injured healer and the people firing randomly around in the woods with magic and arrows, scorching and tearing it up here and there.

Oskoth: "For god sakes people, conserve your energy and weapons!! We are here to save the valley...not tear it up!!"

The people seem to hear him and stop. They get the healer to safety and start treating his wounds, only to find him him dead within a minute of doing so. Oskoth then turns back to Eferas, who is staring with an agitated look at a figure standing to the far back.

Oskoth: "Who's he?"

Eferas: "That man, is Garath. He is rumored to carry a field of nullity around him that stops mages from casting spells or using any magic while he is looking at them. Apparently it is true, it has just happened to me."

Oskoth: "So that's what you meant when you said that you felt as if you had a blindfold being pressed over your eyes."

Eferas: "Yes, but it has gotten worse. I feel numb and my magic ability is gone now. This has only happened to me on rare occasions when someone like him has been around. I am not a psychic, but I can easily see that he is going to be a burden to us on this journey."

Oskoth: "Great, our party has a handicap worse than most others. We will have to strategically avoid him then."

Eferas: "That's an idea I can concur with. We had better not let him in on it or he will be on our heels constantly. I say, what's all that commotion about."

A bunch of yelling at the front of the group catches their attention.

OOC: I don't recall reading anything about him getting drunk and jumping right in. I must have somehow missed that. He most likely changed his post before I got a chance to read it. Sorry for the mix up Alec.

And until Wiseman explains the details of his character to me, his character is hereby suspended from acting in the RP. I sent him a PM concerning this problem. I refuse to let any possible Shadow Wolf-like characters that appear out of nowhere in a demon realm and jump through a portal into this valley by pure chance just waltz around with another weird unexplained weapon.

IC: Oskoth takes the one person's advice and steps into the grass while looking around at the others, who are looking at the road and the red glass. He sees an old man in dark red cloaks standing nearby, staring at the glass intently and walks up to him.

Oskoth: "Well, that isn't a very pleasant start to our journey here, is it? My name is Oskoth. And who may you be in this time of horror, friend?"

Eferas: "My name is Eferas..."

He will learn to incorporate his description into his IC as he gets older and learns more. I did. But it took me a while, as it may him. Sorry, it?s yard sale weekend here and I wanted to go and shop for things for my future home for me and my boyfriend.

The Valley of Thunder

STORY

In a time when the people of Cartouche were unsettled and overcrowded, they sent expeditions out across the great ocean. After a few years, news came back to them of a great land that appeared to be empty and ready for settlement. There were signs that it had at one time been settled, but was since deserted. Eager settlers traveled to this land and fought over it in what became known as the Territory War. One leader rose above the others and enforced a new idea of unity, an idea of a continent that would not be divided, but would stand together. His name was Jenarva Kilgor. From that day, the people named the continent Jenarva after their first ruling king and started their calendar anew. Many kings came and went over the next 1200 years, as well as many conflicts, but each time peace was restored and the land returned to normal.

Then a ruler by the name of Dalion Vortosa succeeded to the throne in 1238, and became the worst and most ruthless king in Jenarva?s history. The people of Jenarva lived in fear and oppression from Dalion?s forces for over a decade, and in that time they starting plotting against the tyrant. In the year 1249, the people rebelled against him and formed the Jenarva Pact. Their leader was a man by the name of Selger Demissio, and he gathered up an army to face Dalion. A month later, the bloodiest war in Jenarva's history, later known as the Red War, began. The war lasted seven years, and in 1256, it was brought to an end when Selger Demissio beheaded Dalion Vortosa in battle. He was made a hero by the people of Jenarva and crowned the new king. He went on to unite the kingdom and make it flourish like no other before him had done. The land prospered and the people lived in peace for over a hundred years after. In that time, the throne changed hands several times. Falkan Demissio is the current ruler and the great grandson of Selger Demissio. He upholds the kingdom like his family before him did.

Gradually, during the reign of Falkan, the Jenarva continent started becoming overpopulated. King Falkan was aware of this and, in 1366, sent expeditions out past the Tobuli Mountains into the sparsely explored continent of Xelvia to look for new lands to colonize. The expeditions came back with great news of unsettled lands ripe for the taking, free of worrisome beasts or problems of any noticeable degree that they saw in their travels. King Falkan appointed a single experienced group to settle the barely charted region known as the Valley of Thunder. Members of the expeditions named it after the constant rumbling they heard while passing through there. The source of the disturbance was never discovered.

In 1368, the colonist group made their way to the delegated site and established a small village outpost in less than a month. The settlers named the village Selger after their king?s great grandfather, the man who restored peace and prosperity to Jenarva. They cut down stretches of forest, set up farmland and more buildings, and hunted in the forests for animals and edible plant life. Explorers continued charting out more of the region, finding sources of water and minerals around the region ideally situated for further settlements, and updating maps each day with their explorations. Two months into the exploring, they discovered intriguing deep underground caves that seemed to be the source of the mysterious rumbling. Time would tell them of what they contained as they planned how to survey them.

For a full seven months, everything went smoothly, and couriers maintained communications between the colony and the king. Iron ore deposits had been found in one of the caves leading to a strange volcanic chamber. At last word, plans were being laid to enter a newly discovered cave adjacent to the lava chamber.

Then all communication ceased. The courier expected for the weekly report was overdue, and the king grew worried. He sent out a party to find out what the trouble was. None of them ever came back. Just as he was about to send another expedition, a lone figure hobbled out of the mountain pass in tattered, bloodstained clothes. Upon entering the village of Jodeb, people crowded around him and carried him to the local healer. On his deathbed, he spoke a fantastic tale of what he had escaped from. He was glad to live long enough to get the word out to others. This was his story.

-----------------------------------------------

After opening the entrance, the colonists entered the cave and stumbled upon what looked almost like a tomb. There were corpses, charred bones, and demonic statues filling a huge chamber, with what looked like stone altars formed from lava by some creature in the far back. Adorning a few of the corpses, several of the statues, and some of the floor area was an untold wealth of jewels and precious metals. Corpses with agonized expressions, holding weapons and shields and wearing armor, were lying scattered throughout the cavern. But it was the condition of the corpses that unnerved even the bravest settler to the core of their very being. Every one of the bodies, other than the charred bones, was in perfect preserved condition and none seemed to show any sign of decay. It was as if everything had been preserved magically. Some of them looked as if something had been feeding on them. The settlers were far too unnerved by this to explore the cave any further, so they left it as it was, and went back to their settlement. They discovered something else as well. The rumbling noises appeared to be coming from deep inside the tomb and not the lava chamber as they had first thought, which unnerved them even more. And as night fell, it started getting louder than ever before.

People started disappearing over the next few days. Search parties were sent out; very few returned from these groups, and those that did told frightening stories. One claimed that she saw a corpse from the cave feeding on the body of one of the settlers. Another stated that he had seen a mysterious fiery beast, which he called an efreet, traipsing through the forest, burning anything in its way as it went. A third person testified to seeing a huge demon standing at the entrance to the cave while imps and hordlings surrounded it.

Then the attacks started, and the departure of the couriers was delayed past the normal time. For almost two weeks, hellish creatures attacked the settlers? barricade around the village day and night. One evening, the attacks ceased long enough to organize the couriers. They were given this story to take back to King Falkan. They were also told that the remainder of the colony would try to make for the ruined temple on the nearby Thunder Mountain that very night. However, early on their journey that night, imps and golems ambushed the couriers. In response, they split up into pairs, agreeing that they would all meet at the mountain pass.

Our dying courier had been running through the woods with another courier, when they came across a clearing littered with the king's search party. An imp attacked them and killed the other courier, while he managed to escape wounded and make his way to the mountain pass. One other courier had made it there, but was mortally wounded and died in front of him. He made his way over the mountain and to the village from there. He died an hour after giving this message.

------------------------------------------

Upon hearing the dead courier?s story, King Falkan advertised across the continent for adventurers. One by one, over the period of a week, a good-sized and amiable-looking group made their way to the palace and signed up for the king?s challenge. The king met with all of them and gave a speech:

?As you know, I asked for able adventurers to help us in our time of crisis. The colony at Selger on the continent of Xelvia is in peril and feared destroyed. The Valley of Thunder is under attack by a horde from hell. The cave the settlers opened must have been sealed hundreds of years ago to contain the horrors it held. Your job is to ascertain whether any of the people from the colony are still alive and to bring the survivors back here. On top of that, I want you to rid the valley of the creatures that have taken it over and make it safe for future settlers. I am sending a mage and a priest with you to study the cavern for possible answers. This evil must be purged and I will not tolerate failure. Now, armor and weapons are available for you, as well as food and other supplies. I bid you a safe journey and a successful venture. God speed.?

The group stocked up on supplies, weapons, and provisions, and headed for the colony village. The journey starts as they enter the Valley of Thunder.

MAP

The valley is 24 miles long and 7 miles wide. There are 3,000-foot mountains on either side of the valley and to the north and south acting as natural barriers, but they are crossable. Only the center of the valley has farmland on it, an area of 4 square miles. There is a dirt road worn from the eastern edge of the valley to the western end, with trails running in and out of the forests in every direction. Forest and streams cover the majority of the valley, and the main waterway flows past the village. Wooden bridges have been constructed across all the streams and here and there, you will find marshes. Mount Thunder is found at the northern tier of the valley and the ruined temple is on its highest peak, 3,010 feet up. The caverns can be found at the base of the southern mountains. The village of Selger is located in the center of the valley, surrounded by farmland. The valley also contains some ancient ruins and the average amount of hills.

3. ASK me if your character is approved first.
4. Don't excessively control the plot or steer it in a direction inconsistent with the original idea.
5. If you do not understand someone?s post or the plot, ask. I would like to keep miscommunication out of this RP.
6. Important decisions for characters should be made by the creator of that character.
7. The party will be somewhat large. If anyone wants to join halfway through, they can say that their character was there for a while and just hadn?t done anything interesting yet.

IC: Oskoth Demero adjusts his long sword strap and wipes his brow with a rag. This valley is most definitely humid, despite it being near winter. He is thankful that there doesn?t seem to be many bugs out and about in the woods, making the trip a little easier. There is a pleasant breeze blowing and his long brown hair flaps in the wind as does his plain gray pants and green shirt. He remarks to himself how hard it is to believe that this peaceful seeming place could ever be such a valley of death. He looks around at the other adventurers out of boredom and finds little of interest to note. As he walks beside the wagon of supplies, he ponders over what they might find and what lies in store for them as they finally go through the mountain pass and into the Valley of Thunder.

I said you need to cut and paste the web address. You cannot click on it.

Ok...somewhere along the line my picture was blurred.

I had someone else look at the original and then the one you linked to ef and they are different in quality. I would feel better if the correct one were shown, so here is a link to the way the map should look.

I feel that the detail is crucial...not to mention my perfectionism drives me to make sure the correct version is seen.

http://www.angelfire.com/pa5/sherlock_holmes/Valley_of_Thunder_2.GIF

Copy and paste it to a new internet page. The damn link won't work.

No, in this case you are wrong. I checked and .png is smaller than .gif, but not smaller than .jpg. Though you appear to be right on the fact that it is lossless in quality.

I don't try to sound mean about it, but the detail found in the .gif file is critical to understanding the map key completely. You might as well convert it back.

I spent an hour here trying to create an Angelfire account, and I am not getting very far. You will save me time and energy.

Thanks for your efforts though.

That is not how the map is supposed to look. I sent it in a gif format and it somehow got turned into a jpeg file.

That is exactly how my first attempt at the map was ruined. I made the mistake of changing it from a bitmap to a jpeg and the colors all blurred.

I will try to somehow get a correct version of the map for people to see.

I will be starting the RP Saturday morning, if I wake up in time to that is. Otherwide I will post it early in the afternoon.

I didn't realize that you were still up. IMAGE(tongue02.gif) I have to create the Legend/Map Key yet and then I will send it to you.

The map is now done. So all I have to do is wait for Arancaytar or someone else here to post it somewhere online and link me to it. That way I can add it to the written RP and get it started.

Arancaytar approved what I had shown him before I went on to finish it, so it should be decent.

Sorry I had therapy to go to.

Sheesh, gone for a bit and the topic goes weird. Aran and I will edit the map between us now.

Is it really necessary to turn a simple rescue mission RP into an international spying plot RP?

Not to mention I have no idea what black ops are.
