--Fort Dranlon-- It had been a remarkable coincidence that Acrio Sulfi arrived at Fort Dranlon on the same day that Thomys had arrived with the soldiers from the Kingdom. This gave Master Krynt the opportunity to address them both on the plans of The Lady. In addition, the soldiers turned out to be extremely helpful in the construction work around the fortress. "The kingdom will send you whatever support you require," Thomys added after being briefed by Master Krynt. "The thought is appreciated; however, we have no choice. I will have to go to Fort Avernum alone. If they suspect anything they may harm Erika," Acrio mentioned. "Besides, it's been quite a while since I've had a chance to manipulate any portals." "Are you sure that is wise? If you fail and the portal becomes unstable the entire Eastern Gallery could be obliterated. Worse, if you succeed, they'll be even more difficult to contain," Thomys was growing irritated of the younger mage's arrogance. Sulfi didn't appreciate the tone in the older mage's voice and was also looking visibly irritated. "He's right Sulfi," Master Krynt chimed in. "Heading alone to Fort Avernum would be extremely dangerous. Erika knew the risks when she left. Now you need to accept them as well. Thomys has offered you a small group of fine soldiers, I suggest you take his offer." Annoyed, but finding no fault in Master Krynt's argument Sulfi accepted. The three men then adjourned their meeting to go help with the work around the fort. Acrio and Thomys both seemed annoyed; but Master Krynt was pleased. Later that evening, as Acrio left with seven of the soldiers, Thomys agreed to remain with his men at Fort Dranlon until Sulfi returned. Master Krynt was glad to have them. This meant work on the fortress would progress even faster. However, at the same time, he was deeply troubled by hearing of the disturbances in the barriers at Fort Dolthar. --Fort Dolthar-- With Acrio Sulfi gone, Denrich found himself responsible for managing most of the daily activities. It wasn't something he couldn't handle; however, he began losing touch with students at the fort. One student in particular seemed to always elude him... You're working under the assumption that I do actually open the portal for you ET. That remains to be seen. Who knows, I might redirect the opening into a solid cliff... :P On that note, I'll post another IC tonight regarding how close Acrio Sulfi is to arriving at Fort Avernum. -------------------- Lt. --Fort Dranlon-- It had been a few hours since the young scout had returned to the fort. Krynt knew that the Lady was devious, but he never suspected that she would kidnap one of the apprentices. Worse yet, apparently they demanded assistance in reopening the portal at Fort Avernum. Master Krynt sighed to himself. Opening portals was a difficult task at best. Mages untrained in proper techniques can easily find themselves in great danger from the powerful energies being woven together. Krynt was indeed powerful; however, his expertise was in barriers, not portals. Krynt walked slowly down the stairs to the meal hall. He felt his gut turn as he realized what he had to do. "I need two volunteers," the aged wizard said to the young mages and apprentices. "One to head back to Fort Dolthar and bring back Acrio Sulfi. The other is to head to Fort Avernum." Almost all of the crowd stood up to volunteer. Krynt knew they would, most of them were tired of waiting around for something to happen. Krynt chose Anthony, the scout who had been kidnapped to return to Fort Dolthar. A young female mage, Erika, was chosen to head to Fort Avernum. --Fort Dolthar-- It had been a few days since Acrio Sulfi had left the medical ward. Colton had also healed and was busy mingling with the other mages. It seemed like things were slowly getting back to normal. There was still the matter of what to do about the ruins to the south; however, Acrio decided that the best action at the moment would be to help Denrich realign the barriers around the fort. With Master Krynt gone, this job was no easy task. An invisible network of magical energies flowed around the fortress supplying the barriers with their power. Through some workings unknown to Acrio and Denrich, Master Krynt created a device to monitor the barriers. A recent check showed a growing disturbance in the energy distribution. Acrio and Denrich had hoped that realigning the nodes responsible for dividing the energy would fix the problem. However, as they had little to no knowledge of what they were doing. Only minor adjustments were possible. -------------------- Lt. Sullust Quaere verum Posts: 2462 | Registered: Wednesday, October 3 2001 07:00 |

I don't think hybrids would be common enough to comprise an entire faction. However, it would be conceivable to have a faction being lead by one. -------------------- Lt. Sullust Quaere verum Posts: 2462 | Registered: Wednesday, October 3 2001 07:00 |

Avernum doesn't seem to very active as of late. I'll give Tyran a couple more days to post. Also, I find it disturbing that there are summaries of posts that are longer than some posts in the RP. Is there really a need to post that much? I'm concerned about creating a 'network' of portals. Maybe there should be some guidelines about where factions can open portals? Teleporting massive armies into enemy faction zones seems unreasonable. But then again so does declaring zones where portals cannot be created... --Fort Dranlon-- Despite the mages best efforts, the building of the walls was proceeding slower than Master Krynt anticipated. It didn't help that a recent cave in caused the river to surge and wash away precious supplies. The loss of several crates of food meant that a group of mages had to be taken of construction duty to search for more mushrooms. To make matters worse, Master Krynt had to increase the scouting patrols to keep watch on the movements to the southeast. On one occasion he conjured up about thirty goblins in an attempt to speed or the work. However, they just ended up squabbling with each other and doing more harm then good. He sighed to himself as he layed down another brick and wipes the sweat off his brow. His work on the walls was done for the day. Now he had to head inside the tower basement to work on the device. --Fort Dolthar-- A couple days had passed, but Colton and Acrio Sulfi were both still in the healing ward recovering from their wounds. Despite his grave injuries, it appeared that Colton would survive. Acrio had been more fortunate, but the burns on his skin needed careful treatment. This left Denrich in charge of all the daily operations within the fort. He divided the work up between a few of the older mages; however, it was still a large burden. As if that weren't enough, disturbances began appearing within the barriers surrounding the fortress. Master Krynt was recognized as an expert in barrier theory and application, and even wrote several books on the subject. Unfortunately, he was miles away, and Denrich had no idea what the magical patterns in the fields meant. --Vahnatai Cache: Steamy Caverns-- Iktin-Bok was a fairly intelligent vahnatai. In his village there was no equal to his skills with a blade. However, the fates don't care who you are. There was indeed a vahnatai cache in the Steamy Caverns; however, it was not left defenseless. One of the clumsier warriors traveling with Iktin-Bok accidentally triggered one of the traps. In an instant the cave sealed shut and began filling with poisonous gas. In a matter of moments, Iktin-Bok and the cadre of vahnatai that he led all closed their eyes forever. [ Monday, January 14, 2008 18:59: Message edited by: Lt. Sullust ] -------------------- Lt. It may be possible to create a mathematical model of evolution using cellular automata. Given strict definitions and axioms, proving things would simpler and less likely to be misinterpreted. The largest part of the work there would be setting up the definitions and the axioms... -------------------- Lt. Sullust Quaere verum Posts: 2462 | Registered: Wednesday, October 3 2001 07:00 |

In a mathematical sense there is something to be said about the involvement of dimension when discussing complexity. Take for instance, the equation x^2 + 1. Over the real numbers, this polynomial is irreducible. However, adding a dimension, leads to a rather simple factorization (x+i)(x-i). Complexity as a whole cannot be measured without discussing at what scope you are considering it. -------------------- Lt. Faction: The Disciples of Khoth Ideology: The Disciples seek to preserve the magical knowledge that might otherwise be lost. History: Mage's were among the groups hit hardest by the Fall. Being one of the most dangerous and powerful members of factions, they were disposed of as quickly as possible. The Disciples of Khoth fled from the chaos in Avernum to the lonely Fort Dolthar. They prefer to avoid conflict with other factions if possible. For the most part the guild has been inactive aside from setting up a few outposts to monitor activity within the surrounding caves. Because of their isolation, they are unaware of the devastation that has left most of the Surface shattered. Misc details: Very few of the members of the disciples are skilled mages. The rest are being trained by the leaders of the faction, Acrio Sulfi, Denrich, and Master Krynt. Specialization Details Magical Efficiency: This field focuses on the controlling of spells. This allows the caster to waste less energy casting spells. It also provides a greater influence over the effects of the spell. Teleportation: The study of teleportation, this includes opening and closing portals as well as spells which teleport without the use of a portal. Barriers: The study of barriers, both their applications and their inner workings. Illusion: The study of spells which are intended to affect other's perception of reality. Important Characters (please do not kill or reanimate without warning)
Relations with other Factions:

--Fort Dolthar-- The assault from the fire lizard didn't kill Sulfi, but it left him staggering. As it moved in closer for another savage attack a massive shockwave hit the creatures body causing its chest to implode. Fire lizards are strong; kill spells are stronger. Denrich sighed as he realized that his spell had been successful. As Sulfi managed to get to his knees he noticed a small charred boat had landed on the shore nearby. Denrich saw this too and rushed to help the badly injured mage who slowly climbed out. Acrio recognized him, he was a young magi sent to head the southern outpost. Colton was his name. Acrio looked like he had barely take a scratch compared to what this other mage had been through. --Fort Dranlon-- "They've taken control of Fort Duvno," the young apprentice reported to Master Krynt. The ancient wizard sighed. It hadn't been long after they started rebuilding Fort Dranlon, that The Lady came and schemed her way to control of the the towns in the Eastern Gallery. He was disgusted by the way she manipulated local citizens. He raised his voice so that the other apprentices nearby could hear him clearly. "We'll have to be careful now. The Lady has a strong foothold to the East and will surely be making her way westward soon enough. I'm afraid that the outer walls will not be finished by the time she reaches our doorstep." "Couldn't we just put up barriers?" one of the younger apprentices asked. Master Krynt laughed at the thought. "None of you are strong enough to create a barrier that would keep rats out. Even I could only keep them at bay for an hour or so at most. Think about it over night and let me know if any of you have any solutions to our problem." Krynt had quite a few of his own solutions. Of course, most of them ended in a glorious death. That night as he slept he dreamt of conjuring a magical storm which dropped massive anvils. One of them connected with The Lady in a rather dramatic, and gory display. -------------------- Lt. Sullust Quaere verum Posts: 2462 | Registered: Wednesday, October 3 2001 07:00 |

--Fort Dolthar-- As the bloody remains of the last message fish washed ashore, Sulfi sighed to himself. What else could go wrong? He thought to himself. As if to answer his question, a giant lizard leapt out from the depths of the lake and landed on the nearby shore. "Come back for more have you?" Acrio Sulfi taunted the creature. He then launched a firestorm spell at the creature. A bit overkill, but he could use the practice. Sulfi waited as the smoke cleared from the massive explosion. His spell had drawn the attention of a few of the nearby mages as well, including Denrich who was currently teaching an alchemy lesson. "Show off!" He shouted. "Real magic has to do with finesse, not brute--". Before he could finish his sentence a very large and very irritated Fire Lizard walked out from the smoke. The mud which had disguised it was easily removed by the spell; however, the creature itself remained unharmed. Still turned away, Sulfi failed to notice the creature as it prepared to breathe fire... --Steamy Caverns-- Almost through the massive steam filled cavern, the small vahnatai group led by Iktin-Bok took a brief detour to the south. He had hoped that the Vahnatai cache which had be built here so long ago was still untouched. It would delay them in their mission; however, they were low on supplies and this would certainly do them better than attempting to barter with local Avernites. There was still a great deal of misunderstanding throughout the human lands about the nature of the Vahnatai... --Outpost South of Fort Dolthar-- As the last few minutes of Colton's life slipped by, he hoped that the fish had managed to reach Fort Dolthar intact. He looked around examining the charred remains of the small outpost. He couldn't see them, but nearby a two other mages lay dead. The smell of burnt flesh was in the air; the taste of blood in his mouth. Despite the chaos surrounding him, the air seemed to be filled with silence. He felt no warmth in his own burns, just the chill of the air. Then there was nothing... --???--- It hadn't taken him long to find the passage. But he didn't expect there to be guardians. Attempting to fight them in his current form would be no use. However, Ohvol could change that. And so he did. He easily overwhelmed the first two humans who were caught offguard by the sudden onslaught. Ohvol cursed to himself as the icebolt missed him by centimeters. But just as soon as the battle began, it ended. The human mage seemed to have disappeared into thin air. "Afraid to die human?" Ohvol shouted into the air. It was to no avail. His prey would not be as easily seduced by Ohvol's mind tricks. It was only a matter of time though. He soon caught up with the mage on the shores of the nearby lake. This time there would be no escape. A cascade of flames burst from Ohvol's mouth and torched the young magi. Fire lizards are quite effective killers... -------------------- Lt. --Fort Dranlon-- Over the time that had passed, Master Krynt had had varying success rebuilding Fort Dranlon. The apprentices he had brought with him were adepts in magic; however, this job relied more heavily on manual labor. The apprentices didn't necessarily enjoy the work; however, they were glad to have something to do. In a few days the main tower would be finished. Then they'd finally be able to sleep in a real building again. --Fort Dolthar-- It had been weeks since Acrio had last heard any word from Master Krynt and his preparations at Fort Dranlon. Though Denrich had taken over the duties of teaching, Acrio still found his hands full with other tasks. Slowly the fish that Master Krynt had enchanted as messengers were dying off. The few that remained limited communications to the outposts. He had been working with Denrich to devise other means of contact; however, as of yet they have only met with limited success. Because of this, communications with the Kingdom of Avernum became sparse at best. This limiting the trade agreement that had once brough necessary food into the faction. The scarce supplies and strict rationing lead to a few members leaving the group. However, this turned out to be a boon as it meant more food to go around. --Steamy Caverns-- The heat in the caverns was instense; however, it was nothing that Iktin-Bok couldn't handle. The quest to capture Ohvol had taken the vahnatai closer to the Great Cave than he had originally intended. He watched the heat ripple of a distant lake of lava. He knew that trouble was ahead. --Somewhere in the Great Cave-- Rushed. That's how Ohvol felt. He had felt the presence of the vahnatai drawing closer and closer. This was dangerous, for they knew exactly how to detect him, even when he shape-shifted. It was only a matter of time before they caught up to him. His talent of manipulating minds was barely enough to coerce a human apprentice, certainly it would have no effect on a vahnatai. I must leave this place soon...but where can I hide from them... -------------------- Lt. Sullust Quaere verum Posts: 2462 | Registered: Wednesday, October 3 2001 07:00 |

Khoth's Disciples Location: The primary base for this faction is set up at Fort Dolthar. In addition, there are 6 smaller outposts, three on the shores west, south, and east of Fort Dolthar, one on an island to the north, one on the largest island in the Eastern Gallery, and the final outpost is located at Fort Dranlon. Leadership: The role of Magistrate, is held by Acrio Sulfi. In addition, two older mages, Denrich, and Master Krynt assist him in maintaining order. Ideology: The primary goal of Khoth's Disciples is the collection and preservation of knowledge, both magical and mundane. After the revolt, the Tower of Magi was plundered. The disciples managed to slip out with a few scrolls. Military: Khoth's Disciples has no official military. The Faction is composed of 40-50 mages, most of whom are still apprentices. Of the more powerful wizards, Master Krynt is the strongest; however, his age has slowed his casting abilities. History: After establishing a base on Fort Dolthar, Khoth's Disciples set about securing their territory with various outposts. In this expansion, they arrived at Fort Dranlon and accidentally set of an explosive trap set by the mysterious Ohvol. Rescued by the Vahnatai lead by Iktin-Bok, Acrio Sulfi learned that Ohvol had been responsible for the destruction of every major city within the Eastern Gallery. Unable to defeat such a foe single-handedly, Sulfi returned to Fort Dolthar to begin further preparations. The Factions Listed below can be utilized by anyone: Iktin-Bok First and foremost, these vahnatai are from a friendly clan. Secondly, they have set up temporary barriers to prevent Ohvol from entering Northeastern Avernum. They have been sent to track down, and destroy Ohvol. Ohvol A deceptive creature from caves even below the lands of the Vahnatai, he uses his abilities to change shape and manipulate weaker-minds to decieve others. It was his talent at this that lead the people of Silvar and Cotra to go to war with one another. Aside from this he is capable of no true magic. Unfortunately, because of his shape-changing ability, no one has seen his true form. He was last seen entering the Great Cave -------------------- Lt.
