:) Good luck! In face of the special date of wandering un-deads it might be wise to kindle a silver candle and burn some storax, laurel and wormwood before you start fighting ... er, uh ... writing.

Perhaps my horrendous writing will be enough to scare them off. :)

Indeed, the unbelievable profit involved in selling rune essence is almost depressing. I spent hours mining and smithing steel stuff, then sell one load of rune stones for twice what I got for the steel.

Need to train my mining/smithing though.

Next question:

The actual process of "crystallizing" a Soul. Drakefyre states that this process is begun only after a person is dead, so there is no need for previous preparation.

How long can a Vahnatai be dead before he is imbued into a crystal? Is there a time limit, or could the one thus resurrected and immortalized have died thousands of years ago?

And what happens when a Crystal Soul is slain/destroyed (as we see happen to Vyvnas-Bok and Jekknol-Bok in X3): Are they permanently gone or can their spirits be restored in a new crystal?

Just asking for wild theories and game references where possible. :)

Lovecraft doesn't explicitly state it has to be midnight in R'lyeh. In fact, judging from the fact that most of the occult business is done in the area around Boston, it would be impractical to time it after a place conveniently on the other side of the planet.

I mean, can you imagine prancing around in gothy costumes chanting unpronouncible phrases around noon? It loses all the atmosphere. :P

Edit: I *am*, however, going to start typing away at a 50k novel at midnight.

I could host it as well, I guess... the url would either be something akin to images.polarisboard.org/saunders/canal/ or ermarian.net/canal/ (can't make a new top-level directory there).

There's always blogspot for quick publishing (www.blogger.com).

It helps to see the monks not as a single entity with information, but rather a number of entities. Together, they receive no new information - however, each is lacking a single bit of information that cannot be deduced: The color of his own eyes.

Indeed, collectively, the monks know all there is to know. What prevents them from killing themselves is their vow of silence, which bars them from sharing their knowledge.

When the tourist gives them the new information, he in fact tells them nothing that the monks did not know, but he tells them something the monks did not know the others knew, and that they cannot tell each other.

If a single monk were to spray-paint the walls, it would have the same effect. However, in the context, that would be breaking the vow of silence, since it is a communication between the monks.

Because before the tourist made his statement, there was no way for a monk to deduce his own eye color from the others' actions. Once he did, the monks knew that one monk would kill himself on the first night, and n on the nth night, and could therefore draw conclusions.

Or, in a mathematical sense, the "true for n=1" statement only became true with the tourist's statement. But once it was true for n=1, it immediately became true for all other numbers.

There were the good old days when threads were closed with mangos and goats, and nobody's eyes were burned. <_<

Unless someone confused goats with goatse, and that would be taken care of quickly. On the eye-burning scale, the Sailor Moon picture rates not too far below said goatse.

This is something I put together for a roleplay once. Overused imagery, and a style that fails miserably at imitating R.E. Howard. But anyways.

quote:

In an age long gone, or yet to be
Within a desert deep
There stood an empire in the dry lands,
There dwelt the Queen of the sun-baked sands,
In an unassailable Keep.

There stood the towers of Khariz-Naar
Beyond the mountain-peaks
There blossomed the royal gardens fair
Where Klath and Orhanyi sweetened the air
And the lorysbirds sang with long beaks.

In castles never rained upon,
‘Neath the towers of the moons
There lay the ancient books of lore
Vast libraries carrying knowledge of yore,
Amid the sunless dunes.

There also stood the bastions grim
Where a grim grey mountain stands
Where the crooked crimson Kunchomer blades
Sing in the hands of the warrior maids
Of the Kiretanian lands.

Since human memory began
Great wars have torn that land
And Iron Armies have trampled to dust
The Iron Empire: Turned it to rust,
And blood upon the sand.

Saunders, did you write that? (You said you "found" it, but not if that was after writing and forgetting it, or you found it somewhere else). The words sound very powerful.

The beginning appears to be trochaic ("LET me WALK aCROSS the BRIDGE that..."), but it switches. There are also some "holes" in the meter (I can't figure out how to stress "And if you sing her songs as you sit her on your knee" without stumbling).

I still don't know if you wrote that, but the style does remind me faintly of your "Guy by the Canal" story...

Edit:

I suddenly realize that I'm among the few who have claimed to poeticize and haven't posted anything.

Wait a bit while I rummage for something that doesn't make you want to claw out your eyes.

A perfect example of total induction!

If there is one monk with red eyes, he knows he must be the only one, so he kills himself on night one.

Assume that if there are n monks with red eyes, they kill themselves on night n.

It remains to be shown that from the assumption follows: If there are n+1 monks with red eyes, they kill themselves on night n+1.

The monks know no more or less than we know. They behave perfectly logically, and know that all the others do so as well. Picture therefore an n+1th monk seeing the entire group of n red-eyed monks before him. He knows that n monks will kill themselves on night n. When they do not, he knows that the group is larger than n, and must include him. He will kill himself at the next night after this, which is n+1.

Therefore, if the premise is true for n red-eyed monks, it is true for n+1 red-eyed monks. Since it is true for one red-eyed monk, it is true for any natural number of red-eyed monks.

:)

---

And if there are thousands of monks in the monastery, then the tourist will be long gone before his terrible statement has any effect. Then suddenly, the headlines will read "mass suicide in monastery!" And the tourist will think: "Hey, isn't that the quaint little place I went on vacation to ten years ago?" :D
