I must protest the innocence of Arcanum on the charges of being an "action rpg".
You can switch between turn-based and real time combat, so you don't need to go buttonmashing.
It's got a compelling storyline, many conversation can have a big impact on your future choices depending on how you play them out, and depending on your personality/race etc. Much more so than most SW games where you either just type in every word that an NPC says and finally get your information, or have very limited dialogue options *cough*avernum*cough*.
Furthermore it's got great graphics, but that's just icing on the cake for an already great game. Graphics can detract from gameplay/storylines but in Arcanum, they don't.

Emjay's short list of the best games ever:
1. Exile 2: Crystal Meth
2. Arcanum

Don't kill yourself.

I pondered suicide almost every day for two and a half years, (before that too, but not as often) and I think my favourite way to go would be drowning while heavily sedated; bring a bottle of sleeping pills and some alcohol to your favourite diving spot. Tie or duct tape yourself to enough rocks to drag you down. Put yourself in such a position that you know you'll fall into the water when you crash. Take your medicine. Read a good book.

I've been free of depression for more than 16 months now, though. Sure my life still isn't that great, but I have the power to change that and there are things worth living for.

When I was four we got a computer called Victor...
It had pacman, pango, space invaders, pc-golf (ascii graphics), paratrooper among others. Then we got a 286-laptop with a whooping 20MB Harddrive. Good enough for civilization! It's all downhill from there, innit?

Edit: Our neighbour had a commodore and all I remember of it is the horrible loading times.

1 would own a computer

Ok, say there's roughly 6, maybe even 7 billion people in the world, going with the higher number, 1% of that is 70 million. I can't believe that there's not more than twice that number of computers in the world today, what source are you using?

And about the 6 people possessing the big lot of wealth, I'd say one of them would be western european. (There's not 360+ million people in the US, closer to 300 right?)

Well I'm done reading The Fires of Heaven, can anyone guess what I'm reading now?

My two favourite authors are Robert Jordan and Ursula Le Guin, but I also like Katherine Kerr, Anne McCaffrey and Douglas Adams a lot.

Well then, ponder it from a different angle; even if you want to have the games on cd (because the cds are pretty, or as backup since CD-Rs are useless for that, and so you wont ever accidentally remove them, or whatever) would you not want to be able to start playing at once by also being able to download it?

Try it with any book you know a moviw was made after. The two are always different in many ways, but you will get a better understanding of the book.

Books on tape are always enjoyable too. Try listening to Goldeneye or Sphere on tape.

Wow. I had no idea there was such an opposite take on books compared to mine, and coming from someone who seems to like books.
I mean I have friends who don't read, and that's just their big loss, but I fear that if you and I would ever meet IRL our thought-wave patterns might collide and cause severe injury.

It's not that the Geneforge engine sucks, it's just horribly unattractive. I don't think too much graphics quality detracts from plot, I just think some people don't realize the importance of a good story (or can't come up with one) so they try (and fail) to compensate with flashy graphics.

We've already had the graphics of Exile downgraded twice. Enough already. (One thing I do like about the Avernums though is the new stat/skill system.)

My conclusions:

1. A new RPG, preferably Fantasy, but Sci-Fi or Historical would be ok as well.
2. Atmosphere! Ominous and creepy, keeping you on the edge of your seat through long, caffeine-drenched nights. A good story is vital, and so is a good challenge, but Atmosphere is everything. (This is why Nethegate and E2 are the best of Spiderweb's games)
3. I haven't registered GF or BoE, and I'm on a PC so as the Macnazi would say: No GF2 for you!
4. I think Jeff can do it more or less alone, how much help he wants to employ is totally up to him.
5. Pretty darn handsome.

I think we'll have to wait a looong time for a really new game. We'll have BoA, GF3 and probably a "Blades (or something) of Geneforge" as well.

Dou you know what I'd like to see after BoG? Geneforge on the Exile 3 engine. Or on something like the Arcanum game engine. If you have to try your hand at this isometric thingie, then either make it real pretty, or totally retro (I'm thinking Ultima 6 Stylee).

The timelines on the first page of this topic seem a little bit weird to me when they say that the Hawthorne that sent Erika et al into Exile is not the same Hawthorne that she had assassinated. Is this actually based on some text from the A/E-trilogies or just something one of you made up?

Once upon a time I played around with the original Exile 2 graphics until I had 20 or so Slith PCs, including more slith mages, a female slith, a slith bard, an assassin, an archer and sliths in heavy armor. I also pasted in and modified some Vahnatai graphics, and the ogre mage, and the rakshasa into the PC-graphic file. Then I gave everybody shields with a lion on it, except for the scantily clad warrior girl who I undressed completely.

I miss the original E2 pics, I'm not good enough to make something that fits in with the newer graphics.

I'm currently playing a 4PC-party in E2 with
Jae (sort of named after me), Alisha, Marijane & Magnus.

Marijane & Magnus have been in all my parties in all the Exiles and Avernums. Once upon a time when I used other races than humans I would name my Slith fighter Zrog, and my Nephil rogue Kisss.

I'm INTP as well.

22% Intuitive
22% Thinker
11% Perceptive
and a whooping 88% Introvert; If I were ever the protagonist of an adventure/role-playing game, the only party allowed would be once I slew the great dragon, and saved the fair maiden. Not 3-5 other guys tagging along, nagging at me constantly.

I think the Best RPG that's not by Spiderweb and isn't an Ultima would be Arcanum.

Came out in 2001, don't think it had much commercial success despite being named best RPG of the year by some magazine or other...
(costs 'bout $10 in stores around here, and that's the original version, not some 'classics' budget re-release.)

You move around in real-time, but can switch between real-time and turn-based combat.
It deals with a world of magic moving towards an industrial revolution so you'll meet some high-tech items as well as loads of spells.

Age of Wonders is a pretty good game, but a fantasy setting does not make it an RPG.
