Since Jeff is reading these boards, this might be a good time to discuss what kind of graphics we want to see in future Spidweb games. This poll is about graphics alone, rather than skill system, spells, or any other part of the games.

Exile Trilogy / BoE category refers to Exile 1, Exile 2, Exile 3 and the user-made graphics for Blades of Exile. Since graphics changed during the course of the trilogy, please consider most recent / best graphics.

Avernum Trilogy / BoA category refers to Avernum 1, Avernum 2, Avernum 3 and the user-made graphics for Blades of Avernum. Since graphics changed during the course of the trilogy, please consider most recent / best graphics.

Avernum 4 category refers to Avernum 4, with its use of recolored images to represent different ranks of soldiers, Drakons recycled as Sliths, etc. Jeff had said that he can not afford to hire a team of professional artists, so what we see in A4 is what we are likely to get in A5 with this option.

Finally, please take this poll seriously. If you want to have some fun, wait until question 4 of the poll.

I would like a return to the Avernum Trilogy's graphics, but as you said: a continuation of A4's graphics is more likely for A5.

As for the BoE graphics, we all know he's not going to return to that.

If His Jeffiness actually makes some more character graphics, as promised, the Averforge 4 graphics might just catch up with the earlier Avernum graphics.

I wouldn't mind seeing the graphics of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, though. ;)

Just to clarify, the question is what you'd want to see in an ideal world, rather than what you think is most likely to happen.

PS It would be interesting to see how people voted and why, rather than just numbers in the poll. (I am not posting mine for now, because starting a poll and saying my opinion right away wouldn't look good.)

Not that it matters, but there ARE people here who prefer the original Exile I and II graphics to the later version that you have apparently labelled "best"...

Those "/" were supposed to mean "and/or", rather than just "and". I guess I should replace them to avoid ambiguity, but saying "most recent and/or best graphics" doesn't sound good.

I'd prefer BoA/AT graphics, personally. But even if Jeff can solicit the community for graphics (like the whole chitrach fiasco), A4-ish graphics might be tolerable.

AT / BoA graphics for sure. I guess Exile graphics would be my second choice. I just don't want it to be A4 graphics but that seems like what it's going to be.

I like the E3 graphics most, probably just for nostalgia value. Avernum/BOA graphics are a close second, they're more likely to be used and I wouldn't be to torn up about it if he did.

As long as the world isn't flat, I like the A4 graphics. Avernum's monsters aren't all that good looking, but the rest of the graphics are fine. Geneforge/A4 improves the monsters greatly.

—Alorael, who knows he's very much in the minority with this opinion. Still, can't you admit that the move to three dimensions was nice for height if nothing else?

BoA/AT, but there are some aspects of A4 that are okay; I would just prefer not to see Shapers, Agents, and Guardians in an Avernum game.

I'll have to go with Alorael in this one. but, with
Dolphin. in the Guardian, Agent, and Shaper thing.
So I guess I'm in a minority here? :(

(Maybe I'll kill this thread to?)
I guess I didn't.

...a4's graphics BETTER than the Exile trilogy's? Are you people all clinically retarded?

As for which graphics I'd like to see in a5: I'd prefer that a5 never be made.

I prefer the ones in the original Exile trilogy... which is most of the reason I never really played Avernum.

And I'm a professional artist (kind of... still in school) but I tend to specialize more in 3D than in sprites. Otherwise I would so volunteer to help Jeff on future endeavors. Maybe I will anyway, surely some nifty 3D stuff would fit in somewhere...

Maybe if his Jeffness got enough volunteers the A4 graphics could reach the numbers of A3/BoA. Since he said that graphics were the most time consuming part of getting A4 ready, this will be the constraint on the numbers of monsters.

I voted for Avernum 4 each time. EDIT : Also, I'd rather have the BoA graphics than the BoE graphics. However, I do hope that it won't prevent the use of boats in Avernum 5, or else I could be very very upset.

As for the joke question... I voted 'neither of the above'. Not sure if you can really compare the graphics, anyway. Homeland has real-time 3D animations (you can see this quite well when fighting Giant Spiders, for example) and 3D cutscenes, Homeland uses 640x480 (or is that 800x600?) resolution, and I think it depends on which graphics are compared. For example, the Maskim graphics in Homeland are awesome, but the A4 doors graphics look in my opinion 'prettier' than the Homeland doors graphics.

I did vote for the A4/BoA graphics, but I am still keen on the oldschool E1 and E2 graphics.

Personally I don't think the homeland graphics were that bad. Everything else in that game however, sucked.

I think elevation and lighting, if implemented, would add a lot to the A4 engine. If I recall correctly, Jeff has said he plans to work on those, as well as produce more PC graphics. Given that he's unlikely to give up on this engine right after working hard on developing it, this is probably our best chance. I like the Avernum Trilogy's graphics, of course, because A1 was my first Spiderweb game, and there's certainly some nostalgia relating to those. However, I doubt that there will be such a reversal for A5.

Divals: A lot of the A4 character graphics are 3D, in fact. My chitrachs were completely made in Blender, for example, and many of the originals are from Poser.

The graphics are not the reason why people dislike A4, methinks. Nevertheless I would prefer BoA graphics.

Yes, poor him.

Because the only way he could ever POSSIBLY keep his family going is to make the same game.

Again.

And again.

Slight yet meaningless variation.

Continued repetition ad infinitum.
