My friend was telling me about this interesting religion the other day.... I forget the exact namehing long and confusing, but interesting never the less. It states that humankind is conditioned to look up to other people as idols, false or real, and if we couldn't find one, then we would make one up. Interesting....Anyone ever heard the idea that man made God instead of God making man? This is where it comes from. Does anyone agree/disagree with this?

Edit: I think I've heard the same thing as Syntrael (and I think I misspelled your name, my fault entirely), though I can't remember where. Carl Sagan wrote something similar, but he's not who wrote it. On a side note, I do believe in souls, as something a being (human, cat, alligator) builds up through living. That doesn't necessarily mean we take it with us when we die, though.

Don't tell me my cat doesn't have a soul. It may have a less intelligent, less "evolved" one than a human, but it's still there.

I doubt it...

Syntyrael: I disagree with that. That's basically idol-worshipping, which is, in my opinion, an outdated religion based on nothing but the human lust for power. OK, maybe not just that, but still... humans cannot make God. It goes against the idea that God created the universe, which I believe is the only rational explanation.

SD- I think you missunderstood me, i meant that humans feel the urge to look up to someone, like an idol as you said, so they created the IDEA of God, and that he is our heavenly superior and he made everything. We didn't actually create God, if that's what you mean. The creation of the universe and all things on our good green earth is still a mystery to my mind.

Syntyrael, you are right. God is only, because humans created him. Because humans need somebody to be responsible for their baseness. Nobody lives without a believe. Even if you make money or yourself to your God, then you believe in something, human nature is lost without a God. Or a Godess.

First do not insult Anime. There is alot of themes that we can learn from Anime. And YUYUHAKUSHO is a great show that emphizes hope. Anyway, I belive there is a God. Because the way I see it if there is no God, there is no hope. But alot of people who do not believe in anything have no hope anyway. So it is just logical that they would not believe in anything. But most people belive in Something. If not God or Gods than a Scientific System, such as "Mother Nature". It really doesn't bother me if you don't believe in God, as long as you believe in something.

No, of course not, but my intention was not to prevent a god from existing merely by saying it: I was stating my own opinion.

It may be a litany, but it's not meaningless: it's my opinion, and it's relevant to the topic. I see no reason not to post it. Nor do I see any reason for you to have the right to tell me not to post it.
If you don't like my opinion, you can post here and say so, but don't try to tell me not to express myself.

It was meaningless in that you stated it in excess of a dozen things. It was a particularly inept attempt at trolling.

Where in New York, Wizard? Upstate, by any chance?

Alec, I don't think you can use "donner" like that. I think you need something after or before it, such as the "y" in "allons-y", but I could be wrong...

'Donner son avis' is idiomatic, translating to 'stating one's opinion', if my French holds.

And an entreaty against greediness in such a context is hardly standard French anyway. IMAGE(Religion (4)_files/tongue.gif)

Opinions are meaningless. People's reactions and feelings about a topic are meaningless, insubstantial, irrational and entirely illogical. Only well-formed thought and reason are of consequence. Your opinions mean nothing--nothing.

You haven't done nothin'.

I suppose I'm sort of a Christian, although none of my family has been to church for years (with the possible exception of my dad), but I go to SU (scripture union) camps sometimes, like this Easter I'm going to Austria, and so do my brother and sister sometimes.
I'm not a very spiritual or religious person, to be honest.

Hmmm...there's a lot of aetheists on this forum. I'm wondering how many people here believe in the big bang theory? It just seems logical since you don't believe in God. I myself believe in the theory. Post Your thoughts on this?
