C++ being platform dependent relies totally on what libraries you're using. The standard C++ library is platform independent. Windows has it's own library's and header files. I would check out www.cprogramming.com and www.cplusplus.com [ Wednesday, March 12, 2008 09:25: Message edited by: Drakemoore ] Posts: 14 | Registered: Friday, March 30 2007 07:00 |

I'd rate it along the lines of a 3-4 It wasn't as bad as Avernum 4 but it still is lacking a lot of what the Exile series had. 1. The game world in AV 4 / 5 is quite small, perhaps some believe it isn't but it really quite is when compared to the older games. 2. I liked having to pay to train skills and visiting a trainer. 3. I liked in the older exile games being able to face an entire army of troglodytes and other creatures and even being able to mass summon my own army. I can't even summon but a few creatures and there are no large battles. 4. Random encounters are almost non existent in comparison to the later games. I miss being able to run across large parties of monsters trying to prevent my movement. 5. Dungeons don't respawn, not even a little. Perhaps some people dislike it that they respawn but I myself loved it. It also was nice that when I ran out of a dungeon in exile without finishing off the big boss and I came back later I'd have to fight my way through the new hordes. 6. Artwork is another big thing for me. The way the older exiles were with their artwork while being lower res was beautiful yet while the system that we have now in AV4, 5, Geneforge is nice, art wise it's just not cutting it for me. It really needs to be fixed. All of the creatures tend to look the same, all the NPCs look the same there's no variation. 7. Exploration in the newer games unfortunately is taking a rapid decline and when there is a little bit of exploration even in such a small world map it means I have to visit every single town before scouting out the nearby caverns because if I don't then I worry that I miss a quest. 8. What happened to there usually being an npc in most towns that bought misc stuff? Most of the items in AV 5 you can't even sell or trade anymore, sure it's junk and the amount you received was pitiful. But it was still something you could grab and barter. 9. There's this whole " The evil guy is trying to kill you, he has spies everywhere! He's going to get you!" And yet there's almost no encounters with these spies and very little development in terms of story throughout the game. I liked being able to try out an empire view on things which was nice, but overall the game is a bit disappointing. I'm not trying to bash, it's just I don't feel that the more recent game releases are doing any justice to the franchise that we know and love. A few things were fixed and made better, but it's still not up to par with Exile, AV 1-3. Posts: 14 | Registered: Friday, March 30 2007 07:00 |

I found the exile demo trilogy on a Games 1000 demo disk that I got packaged with an old civil war game during the mid 90's. Posts: 14 | Registered: Friday, March 30 2007 07:00 |

I'm currently a student and I'm just curious as to what programming language the engine is coded in? I'm guessing C since it was more widely used at the time spiderweb software was founded though it could easily be C++ I imagine. I know a lot of mac programmers which code in mostly C. Ermn.. the geek comment was a joke. I've noticed quite a few people hang around the forums a lot and have been around spidweb boards for a very long time. That's all, no offense meant. Posts: 14 | Registered: Friday, March 30 2007 07:00 |

Tried searching but for some reason the forums have been acting funky today not sure what the cause is.. Anyways this is sort of a question for Jeff but I doubt I'll get a response so I'm also asking all you forum geeks. :P Has there ever been any thoughts around here of Jeff doing a sci-fi game in the history of Spidweb or in the future perhaps? Geneforge touched on some aspects of it a little but it was still mostly magical / fantasy based. Mostly gearing towards space theme sci fi rpg. It's different of course from the rest of Jeff's games and probably way out of his plans but I was just curious. The idea intrigues me a bit is all. *turns on anti flame shield* Posts: 14 | Registered: Friday, March 30 2007 07:00 |

Now before the hardcore flaming starts :P I'm not saying the way Spidwebs games are is bad, I've played them since Exile and have always loved them more than pretty much any other rpg I've ever played. One thing recently thats been tugging at me is the thought of one day having a coop mode within some of the games, am not sure what form it would be in. But it would be cool to be able to play Geneforce x# Avernum x# or even another Nethergate in the future. It would probably mean the games would need to be expanded more and have more difficulty with a coop mode. The one thing I do not know is how difficult Spidwebs engine is to add on such network code, some engines can be modified very quickly others require an entire rewrite. Anyways what are your opinions on it? Poll Information This poll contains 1 question(s). 6 user(s) have voted. One thing I would prefer is an option when creating a New Game that allows you to have some dungeon maps respawn like they did in Exile. At times I'd sit around and wait for them to respawn so I could level up more, some would / wouldn't like this so it would be nice IMO if it were added as an option. I've read these forums many times as well as play all the games. But I've never posted here until now. To be quite honest I find A4 a major disappointment, the geneforge version of spiderwebs engine should have stayed with geneforge. It should not have been crossed over to Avernum, almost all of the artwork was also crossed over, I don't mind some artwork being crossed over, but when almost all of the art as well as char models, monsters etc is crossed over and a plot slapped on it kind of losses its uniqueness. I understand that a small company often needs to use their art in most of their games and not make new art because it consumes a lot of time. But please, at least make more unique art and not just copy it all. Also the games seem to have been losing detail ever since exile and the first nethergate version. The move to avernum and geneforge seemed to show a lot less detail in the artwork as well as less non text content in my opinion. Anyways, my two cents, I'm most likely going to be flamed but eh.
