Problems with Help the Rebels quest. in Geneforge Series

Durrrr, I forgot about the creator :o

Either way, that part of the game is long behind me.

Now that I've finished the game, the only quests that have remained for me are the "Help the Rebels" (too late to change it but has been answered here), the two recurring quests "Shaper Junk and Dried Herbs", the quest about servile spies (I've found some, killed some and the only option I ever got was to 'lie' and say there weren't any  ), and the quest for puresteel for the Shaper that's in the Warrens (I found one ring and went to have a sword made. Then I killed him).

Overall I'm amazed at the quality of the game. I don't know what Q&A process Jeff has but for one man he has produced an engrossing (well, some minor faults that I've already aired out :P ) game that's relatively bug free (I've certainly never had any glitches, desktop crashes or the like). The 'biggest' bug I've had is in the Geneforge where the Shapers that assist you go hostile if you don't talk to Akhari Blaize before attacking him (or if you attack any of the friendly spawned creations after killing Blaize). Not a big deal and can be worked around.

So yeah, props to Jeff for making an awesome game! Can't wait to play GF4 :D

You can certainly do that except... This has little to do with me being able to do the "Help the Rebels Quest".

This also means that I have to get to Dhonal Island without either helping the rebels (via the canister), harming them (killing them all), killing Dwaina, or destroyinf the canister. If there's another way to get off the island I don't know it :(

Um... for phat lewts and exp?! duh lol!

It's weird though. The dude gives you an Anget Cloak and yet he drops another one when killed.

Jokes aside I need to redo this section of Gull Island and spare Khyryk. Also kill Shaper Agatha only after I complete her quests. I got a bit kill happy on the first islands and killed Dwaina and the dude in Mined Woods and now can't learn Augmentation :(

Unrelated to the thread but I've made so many new threads in this forum I don't want to litter with a new one.

Just finished Gull Island and... Alwan left. I really wish the walkthrough would have mentioned that killing Khyryk would cause this. (I guess you could say it's a no-brainer but still :o ).

So now I'm alone. All alone in the frozen wastes of Island of Spears. At Dhonal Greta left, now Alwan left, my Fyora stopped being efficient a long time ago and it's just me. A lone Guardian with chattering teeth against the Drayks and the howling wind...

Edit: Of course, all of this just gives me more incentive to murder everything that moves that much more! All hail the Way of the Shapers!

This is actually something I am trying to pay more attention to on what's left of this and any subsequent run throughs.

I'm thinking about Stonespire right now. I am loyalist and from the walkthrough I understand that Shapers will "retake control" (e.g. all the serviles will leave) Stonespire after I complete Khyryk's quests. Trying to figure out what's a good time to go in and slaughter the lot of them for the additional exp...

Also, fun note - the alchemist in that town (the one to whom you return the ripped in half book) goes hostile if you attack the serviles. Traitourous bastard!

When I was killing the Drayk that was infested with worms (and whose worms had worms :D ) my PC was surrounded by eight worms all attacking together.

Overall I am ready to believe that a square grid is used. I just think that the grid is "turned" 45 degrees so the squares are "standing" on their angles instead of the sides.

Back on topic though, I'm wondering if I'd have to change the build for Torment at all. Does the amount of Leadership and Mechanics you need to go through the game rise in Torment difficulty setting? Also, should I consider investing more points into Endurance no matter what class I pick? I'm guessing the tradeoff between better armor (Blessing Crystals) versus better chance to hit (Ivory Skulls) will be much more important.

Oh, and has anyone been able to figure out the approximate effect of Tiny Orb of Mist since Matt's guide? :o

Funny that you mention that SoT, I just cleared out the Reaper Turrets on Gull Island about an hour ago.

Not sure what the "Reaping" effect is but they were quite vicious. Not so bad on the PC but Awlan was being hit for ~200 a shot. Thankfully with judicious use of tree cover I was able to kill all the turrents (level 34 Guardian PC and 28 Awlan NPC).

I'm having a dickens of a time imagining what the game is like on a higher difficulty setting though. I doubt a Guardian would fair well (or I'd have neough patience for it). Hopefully you get more exp per kill on higher difficulty levels to make up for things? Well, we'll see once I replay as a pro-rebel (can't afford GF4 yet :( ).

Does anything effect how effective your stun is? I must be doing something wrong because I hit something twice with a Stun Baton and it still has the AP to move in and attack :(

Overall I already have the life draining Oozing Blade and eagerly awaiting the Frozen Blade for those Acid Resistant enemies (Rothgorth)... Wondering if there are any Reviving Crystals besides the two mentioned in the walkthrough. Oh, any thoughts on Reaper Batons?

Also, thank you for clarifying the walking part of GF3. I wish Jeff would give us more options (such as seeing the grid and the like). =/

Aw nuts.

Makes me wish I could shift+click the gold amount and make little stacks of gold like ones you find on the ground or in chests.

Any word if this has been implemented in GF4?

Also, unrelated but are you able to make map annotations in GF4? I see question marks and the like on maps in screenshots. *hopes*

I think I may have been slowed and had 9 instead of 10 AP at the time without noticing it. If all swords and batons use 5AP per attack then I blame my lack of attention to detail at that time :P

This makes me wish I had a breakdown of how much AP each attack or action takes.

I know that it's 5AP per sword swing/baton shot and 3AP per Crystal use.

1AP to change weapons. I believe accessing your inventory during combat is "free".

Also, I think casting any kind of spell is 5AP as well? And drinking any kind of potion is 3AP? Any other action that can be performed during battle that I missed?

And really looking forward to input regarding Batons. On Gull Island now (playing a flip-flopping loyalist) and went back to Acid from Submission :( Looks like the first Reaper Baton is in Khyryk's Tower T_T

Thank you for the reply!

My only question though is... why is 30,000 the limit? Is this a coding limitation or was some other explanation proposed by Jeff? At least I know about this for the next walkthrough so I can save valuable equipment to sell when money runs low.

I'll fiddle around with the character walk speed, thank you for that as well :)

I tried Tricky Difficulty just for fun after the cakewalk that was cleaning out Dhonal Island after freeing Greiner. Everything went more-or-less well untill I got to Cultist Woods on Full Island. The roaming bands of Serviles (yes, I realize you could avoid them but I'm a "kill-all-that-breathes" loyalist :D ) kill me very quickly. What I notice immediatly between "Normal" (what I am playing at during my first run through) and "Tricky" is that I get hit more often and for much more... Since I'm a Guardian my options are fairly limited...

With that in mind I tried Daze. It seems to be resisted most every time everywhere no matter how much I try it. Granted my Mental Magic is at 1 and my Spellcraft is at 0. Which one of these (or how) would effect the success chance of Daze?

Since I have an Oozing Blade that drains HP I now, more than ever, prefer to waltz right in and start hacking away. An interesting thing I noticed is that different weapons have different AP costs for using them? For example I can swing the Oozing Blade twice a turn at an adjacent target but it seems I can only use the Guardian Claymore (my standin before I get the Frozen Blade against Rotgorths... fought one on the docks and they are scaaaaryyy...) once?

Anyway, back on topic. I was wondering about Batons. It seems that the strongest is the Reaper but my guess is that it'll come quite late in the game. Submission seems nice (it's a step 'up', right?) but the "Stun" effect hardly seems worth it compared to the additional Acid damage from an Acid Baton (or, if you feel like it, stacking Acid and Poison from their respective Batons). I guess the concesus on the boards is to get Poison, then Acid and then hold out till Reaper if you really want to twirl a Baton in a fight?

All that aside, back to my original question. I would really like my next playthrough (mostly solo 100% pro-rebel, it'll-suck-in-the-beginning Agent) to be on Tricky or even higher difficulty level. Any character development, tactics or other tips or suggestions?

Finally, this is likely old news but I was delighted to discover that blocking pathways works in Geneforge just as well as it does in other similar games. Case in point: I was unable to get into Lord Rahul's chambers for some reason (probably he lets you in only later in the game?). He taunted me to use my "ingenuity" so I tried repeatedly to get past the many guards and creations flitting through the halls of his rooms. Finally I lined up Greta and Alwan so they completely blocked the first entryway into the "private chambers" and deactivated them for good measure so I wouldn't accidentally move them. All this left was one guard who walked between the two parts of the hallway giving me plenty of time to sneak into Lord Rahul's rooms (but not to the canister).

Why not to the canister? Because bottleknecking two guards and two creations made their walking animations cycle without end and made the game lag HORRENDOUSLY. I was able to take it slow and loot Lord Rahul's room and storage but decided that everything else was not worth the effort. Still, a nice tactic for any pro-rebels that want the goodies without the hassle!

The first one's fairly straightforward - for some reason the money cap on my character is capped at 30,000. No matter what I seel or to whom I can't get above 30,000 gold nor can I transfer any out. I can always cheat to get more gold if I ever need it but this is still quite a bother :(

I also played around a bit with the character editor for GF3 (the one by Slp006, both files). I didn't get far because I didn't want to spoil the fun and challenge of the game for myself, but the way my character's walking speed was sped up by itemschars.txt was nice. A bit too nice I'm afraid since it made me motion sick (haha, yeah) and I was wondering if anyone knew which value to change to modify the walking speed so I could set it to fast... but not too fast.

Thanks!

Too long, didn't read.

Someone please recap how the discussion about the WOI turned to Wako?

Better yet, someone please explain why Wako is still relevant today.

Oh, a big LULZ to any Truthers out here.

There's nothing "strange" about crediblity.

Also, you have it wrong. It's not how "honest" or "credible" a person sounds that makes their information true, it's how good their sources are.

Something I never understood in Geneforge 4: Rebellion

Since we're in a nitpicking thread...

...why are there no bows in Geneforge? Did Batons make Bows (and crossbows, for the matter) obosolete?

As for horses, this never really bothered me... Now that you mention it, perhaps Shapers sometimes simply use their existing creations when they get tired of walking? Sure, this isn't present in the game but I can always tell my Battle Alpha to carry me for a while while I rest. And their scorpion-like tail thingy aside the Glaahk look like they were made to be ridden...

Talking about "riding", a very perverted thought occurs to me.

We know there are female shapers (or male if that's what boils your pot), so has there been any precedent, any rules or such about coitus between shaper and creation? I begin to wonder if this is a problem of any sort and how it's viewed in Shaper society or outside of Shaper society. Are there creations made only for pleasure? I remember that creations are not given the ability to reproduce, but considering that actually shaping other creations (as the Drakons do) means that just parodies of human sexual organs could be made?

Thoughts?

Actually the whole "custom title" thing is extremely frustrating because it's very difficult to tell if someone's a Mod or an Admin at a glance. I wish part of the price of becoming a Mod/Admin was that you could only wear a tag with your title in it.

Thanks for all the replies guys!

I'm thinking that there's no point to spread out too thin.

I'll either use four Blessed Crystals (for a total of +20% armor) on my four un-enchanted equipment pieces (bringing my total armor up to 90%) or three Spines (wish I knew if they did anything against magic and baton/javelin damage and if they stacked) and an Ivory Skull.

A much appreciated last call for suggestions!

Ok so just to be 100% clear, Spines won't do squat to enemies that cast magic spells on me or that shoot me with melee attacks (quick aside, strange that there are Batons and Javelines... but no Bows. Weird.) correct?

Therefore the usefulness of Spines is diminished because most of the Geneforge combat is ranged?

Finally, could someone please chime in and explain the statistics that display whenever someone misses a hit? Meaning the "Missed: (##%)" thing. Thanks!

Edit: Found the Clover Boots... They were just sitting there, out in the open. I ignored them because I thought they were Heavy Boots  Happy though! :D

I just made Crystaline Shroud and smacked a Golden Crystal on it (something that, strangely enough, seems to give me a HER bonus of 12 from the shroud + 13 from the Golden Crystal? Either that or something else is causing my resistances to increase by 25 for all elements instead of the expected 17 when I put the Shroud on).

I also have the Oozing Blade and put a Reviving Cystal on it. I put a Blessed Crystal on my Essence Vambraces early in the game so right now I just have to think about the Ring, Belt, Cloak and Boots (going to use Clover Boots instead of Vat Boots).

I have 5 Blessed Crystals, 4 Ivory Skulls and 3 Steel Spines and a few questions :P

Ivory Skulls - They will add a bonus to hit which seems nice. I have been missing some of my blows but I never understood the "Missed (##%)" line that comes up. Does that mean that I missed by that much? What does that mean?! @_@

Steel Spines - Will they reflect daamge (thus lessening damage to me)? Or is the damage they deal based somehow on the damage I receive (thus the better armored I am the worse the spine effect)? Will ranged attackers also feel the hurt from the spines or only the melee ones?

Blessed Crystals - These are basically a shoo-in for whatever needs to be enchanted really :P

Finally, if it helps, here's what I'm wearing now as a level 27 "25% melee 75% ranged" Guardian:

Symbiotic Cloak
Girdle of Life
Clover Boots
Blessed Necklace
Miner's Gloves
Crystalline Shroud
Essence Vambraces
Oozing Blade/Submission Baton

Thank you for all the help guys! :D

You know, you could just call them:

IMAGE(http://www.spiderwebsoftware.com/images/template/rollover/Address.jpg)

I'd hasten to recommend you only do that during "business hours" (9am to 5pm) Pacific Time but Jeff likely has something set up to avoid getting calls in the middle of the night anyway.

Also keep in mind that you'll likely be talking to his secretary (his wife I believe?) so being nice helps tons.

Ehhh, from what I understand things are rarely that cut and dry.

I doubt Jeff would take any offer that would not allow him to maintain creative control of all the series. (Even then there's always a chance of Jeff being muscled out from that position in favour of profits). Furthermore I doubt that just because someone bought Jeff's IP he would want to stop making games. He might have to upgrade his skills (LOL CANISTER) but I'd think he'd join the new team to work on the next game. Finally I hope everyoen realizes that Jeff is doing this more out of love and as a hobby instead of for the money. Even though I wish him the best I doubt he'll ever roll in a Ferrari because of this job or because his company was purchased.

Edit: On topic - Yes, I would love to have more NPCs join your party! I've read the complaints saying "But that'd make Shapers useless and obsolete! Also, look at the design for the first game!" and I think they are rubbish! I've yet to read of anyone who made their Shaper so powerfull through casual gameplay that they were controlling seven usefull creations. Having one or two human NPCs that can join you can add to the atmosphere, break up the monotony and, (if Jeff were to write it) provide some between-NPC interaction. Love? Backstory? Greta and Alwan are as flat and one-dimensional, despite Jeff's considerable writing talent!

So yes, I say bring on the party NPCs in the next Geneforge (or next game that Jeff is working on in general)!!

Um, really? :(

So far I'm five areas short of finishing Dhonal Island and still wearing enchanted Vat Boots (slapped a Runed Amethyst on them) :x

What about the Gem List and Gem Effects then? Is that as complete as can be in Matt's guide?

Thanks :)
