Thanks, Kel. Overwhelming: if you're reading this, please tell me when you put my things up for download. Anyhow, I'd like you to make the versions clear (0.9.1 for the Mac version, 0.9.0 for the PC version). Also, more importantly, provide a link to the source. I don't want people to download it without realising that source is available. (don't bother about the processed source one, but link to the other one (see the page Kel put up)). Incidentally, there is a slightly GUI Mac version now. To anyone with a PC and a compiler: It'd be great if you could get version 0.9.1 to compile, and thereby get me an up-to-date Windows binary. It'll probably need a few tweaks, but it shouldn't be anything major (ask me by email or AIM) -------------------- Barcoorah: I even did it to a big dorset ram. I reckon it's reveal the answers time. |N| < |R|: This proof isn't my favourite, but it doesn't have as many subscripts so it's easier to put on a forum. It's obviously not true that |N| > |R|, because N is a subset of R. Suppose |N| = |R|. If this was the case, we could make a big list of all the real numbers, like so: 1: 23.553456765... 2: 4.0000000... 3: 3.14159.... . . . Now we take the diagonal after the decimal point (shown in bold), which makes the number 0.501.... Then we change every 5 to a 6, and every non-5 to a 5, getting 0.655.... This number can't be the first in our list, because the first digit is different. It can't be the second, because the second digit is different, and so on. So it can't be on our list. But our list was supposed to be of all the real numbers. Contradiction, so the original assumption (that |N| = |R|) must be wrong. |(0,1)| = |R| Consider the function f(x) = tan(90x) (in degrees) This function takes everything in (0,1) to something in R, and everything in R is covered by this. So there is a one-to-one mapping, so the sets are the same size. ----- Continuum hypothesis: It is consistent for it to be true, and consistent for it to be false. So there is a model of set theory which has a set of size between N and R, which is good enough for me. :-) Edit: Formatting [ Monday, September 12, 2005 08:31: Message edited by: Khoth ] -------------------- Barcoorah: I even did it to a big dorset ram. desperance.net - Don't follow this link Posts: 1798 | Registered: Thursday, October 4 2001 07:00 |

University level education for all, whether they want it or not, would likely be a bad thing, but everyone should be literate and numerate, and know a bit about how the world works beyond their actual experience (basic science, history, political/economic structure of current country). Some critical thinking skills would be a good idea too. Scammers, quacks and politicians have it far too easy. (Although I don't know how much that can be taught) [ Sunday, September 11, 2005 11:34: Message edited by: Khoth ] -------------------- Barcoorah: I even did it to a big dorset ram. desperance.net - Don't follow this link Posts: 1798 | Registered: Thursday, October 4 2001 07:00 |

Cast Augmentation on yourself and anyone else you feel you can spare the essence for (and maybe use one of those 2657 pods you have hoarded). Cast the bless/haste party spell the name of which I forget. As soon as you read the book, run into a side passage so you don't get surrounded at once. IIRC, acid is really good against ghosts and fire is useless. Or yes, come back later. Kyra's refuge is harder than the general area it's in. -------------------- Barcoorah: I even did it to a big dorset ram. New Mac BoE Posts: 1798 | Registered: Thursday, October 4 2001 07:00 |

You have to open a cmd.exe window, and run it from there. If you just double-click it, it will start up, finish and Windows will helpfully close the window without giving you a chance to read the output telling you what you're supposed to do. I still have everything, so people can email me for it if they want. -------------------- Barcoorah: I even did it to a big dorset ram. I forgot to include a license saying it was okay. Yes, you can distribute it, modify it or whatever. You make a list of all the real numbers, then show that actually you failed. The standard proof is to muck about with decimal expansions, but there are other ways. -------------------- Barcoorah: I even did it to a big dorset ram. desperance.net - Don't follow this link Posts: 1798 | Registered: Thursday, October 4 2001 07:00 |

Question 4: Where does Q (the set of rational numbers (ie fractions)) fit into all this? Is is bigger or smaller or the same size as N? As R? I think I'll wait until some more people have done this before posting my reasoning. The easy way to kill the djinns involves a high-power laser and a cunningly placed mirror. Yes, you need a treasure. The Vahnatai outpost is inside the worm cave. Or you could get Morog's scroll.
