Damn that summer reading. Sweet lord. I never got more than 8 hours of sleep at once over the entire summer, and haven't gotten more than four for the past week.

I love school, but man, Junior year with six freaking honors classes, marching band, fencing, rock climbing, cross country, drama, swimming, and bass lessons is really starting to push it.

Today was the first of the last days of school for me. Senior year...

Anyway, school as a whole isn't so bad for me. I tend to enjoy most classes I take (minus math), and like the social aspects of public school.

Granted, I wouldn't go if I had a choice, but since I don't, I try not to complain.

If you are aware it's a useless poll, why spam the boards with it?

Also, I get to point and laugh. I have loved school for exactly one year and three months - in retrospect, it seems a far better institution than it seemed while I was in it.

Trust me, that usually only gets worse once you start college or work. Not that you have to arrive earlier, it's just that you have to fix your own breakfast and stuff. :P

School would be great if I could:

- Go to school at an acceptable time. 11 AM or so, not 8:50.
- Pick what classes I wanted to do for the *whole* of my school career. I have to do ridiculous things like Geography and PE all the way up to year 11, and I had to do Latin until year 8.
- Use a computer.
- Be assessed non-competititvely (an exam that ranks my marks against a set standard, as opposed to against all the other students.
- Not have homework.

However, none of these are even remotely present in school right now, and I hate it.

Indeed. I got used to not having breakfast really early in life, but waking up early to go to school is not even remotely as hard as waking up early to go to work. Getting up to face a day of "boredom" in school doesn't even compare to facing a hard day of work with your boss watching your back.
Now if you think you that your schedule is messed up and keep complaining waking up early, check out mine for the next following 4 months: My first class starts at 7:30am, and since I live far away from school I need to get leave the house at 6:00am. If I don't want to be late that is, which means that I have to wake up at least 4:45am. Moreover, my last class ends at 6:00pm, which means i'll probably get to my house at 8:00pm. On the positive note, I only go to college Tuesdays and Thursdays so it is not that bad.

I liked school, and I liked university more. I've got a job now, which is not as good as university but still enjoyable. But if I feel I'm not learning anything, I'll be looking for a new job.

I really hate school. I would like it because I don't mind learning but the teachers are terrible and you barely learn anything. Most of them are more worried about making sure that you know you can't do anything, including grow your hair long, without getting into trouble about it. The only thing I like about school is socialising. Also violence is at school and when you can't be bothered and someone is getting in your face thats what happens. There has been 9 fights in the last 8 days, and we are at a school with only around 900 people in it, the majority of the 900 being 10-14 year olds. I'm just glad no-one is stupid enough to fight with weapons, because using a gun or knife to solve your problems is just, quite frankly, cheap and cowardly.

If you don't like the idea of boss watching your back, then be your own boss. Or alternatively, get a job where your boss has better things to do.

I was talking about my ex-boss as a matter of fact; I just figured that the members in here that have worked would know the feeling of having a horrible boss who seems to know your every move. Anyhow, Being my own boss is out of the question since I'm only 18 living at my mother's house and going to college full time while managing to work part-time to pay for my quite expensive tuition bill. I don't lose hope that it would happen some day though.

Due to the fact that you only had two options, I had to do Yes (I love it). You should of put in yes, it's alright, and no. Anyway, school is pretty good for me, apart from some subjects I have at the moment (French and Earth, to name a few). And science, come to think of it. Not that science is a bad subject, I just have a bad teacher. I can't wait until next year, when we have a wider range of choices to study (I am definitely taking Graphics), but at the moment, I still enjoy school.

Everyone seems to hate having to wake up early........For me, I see having school starting in the morning shortening the hours of boredom I have to live through every day until the other occupants of the planet wake up and start being interesting.........

All of my classes are the traditional format. I don't think I have a class with more than 20 people in it.

Yes, getting up early sucks. I have to get up at around 5:00 AM just to get the bus.
School also sucks because the few friends I have aren't in any of my classes. Which might be a good thing in the case of my girlfriend. :P

On average my classes have 45 students, and some have few as 30. A class having 20-25 students is considered a small class at my school, and would commonly be only open to people with the particular subject as a major, or at odd hours of the day/night.

--------------------------------------------

I don't mind getting up early, as I've been getting up around 7:00 for years. I usually sign up for classes that start around 10:00 because I have a lot to do in the morning before I leave the house.

Traditional classrooms are better actually. My college classes are about 15-20 students. School itself gives the best experience if you have good teachers who actually care for your learning and they try to help you the best they can. This thread is indeed a good one to open up to since a lot of us can pretty much relate to this in almost a daily setting.

Indeed. Almost all my classes have 45 to 50 students, yet I've taken two major classes (psy and phil) where there were around 120 students. It wasn't that bad, but I def prefer smaller classes.
To Jeros: Don't be fooled my friend. Even when you are in smaller classes, teachers still don't care about you.

To Dolphin: I wouldn't mind waking up early either (God knows I should be used to it by now), if it wouldn't be for the cold temperature outside and the boring day ahead of me.

I really must get into the habit of clarifing myself more often. I know that not all smaller classroom settings lead to teachers having a bigger concern for you, I mean that the percentage of teachers caring for you in that particular setting is increased (for some, not all). This is purely by my personal experience and is obviously varied between people.

I have taken one lecture room setting during the spring semester with around 250 students (organic chemistry, which was difficult) and the professor didn't care less on who you were. I also took an honor class with about 10 students (an advanced college english course) and the professor cared for us a whole lot more and actually accepted open discussions and questions. (that's actually a shock for me as a lot of my high school teachers never really opened up for Q&A that often)

Professors in large classes don't necessarily care less about students. There are just too many students to pay individual attention to during the lecture. However, many professors constantly invite students to office hours and complain that not enough students come. If you do come to their office hours, you get even more attention than in a class of 10 people. So if you are in a huge lecture, you just have to be more active.

About class sizes, my classes in Berkeley were mostly in the 40-400 students range. All of those huge lectures also had 15-30 person discussion sections led by TAs. However, the quality of discussion sections varied widely depending on the grad student leading it. (Same could be said about quality of lectures themselves, but there are more clueless TAs than clueless professors.) The huge lecture combined with small discussions worked well in theory, but you had to come to professors' office hours to get the amount of interaction with them you'd get in a smaller class.

About school in general, it has its advantages and disadvantages. Sometimes it feels like I have less free time now, sometimes more. As for painful boredom, that can be found at work just as often as in a class.

Good points you made Zeviz with getting help from the professors directly during their office hours and all. Talking about things you do not understand directly to the professor is something that, I admit, I do not take advantage of. Now that you brought that up, I think I'll start taking advantage of it.

Individual attention beats any class size as you're the focal point of Q&A.
